I don't mind the F word, I just mind the cheap joke.
Dark Days, which I recommended earlier, is the only movie I've ever seen get a 100% freshness rating on rottentomatos.com - I don't think even I would have given it a 100, but that's cool to see.

I saw Meet the Fockers and Hotel Rwanda over the weekend.
Meet the Fockers was ok, it had it's funny moments but I wasn't blown away. I didn't think the first one was all that funny either but I thought I'd give it a shot.
Hotel Rwanda, however, was excellent. I thought it was really well done.

My boyfriend and I were just watching Bowling for Columbine. I have only seen parts of it before on the internet. My sister rented the film because she has to watch it for a college class of hers. She also ordered it off Ebay and she is giving it to me when it comes. Well did not finish the documentary yet but what I have seen it really interesting. The only part I saw before was what Marilyn Manson had to say. I absolutely love what he says in there. I may be a little biased since he is one of my favorite singers but many people realized how intelligent he really is from Bowling for Columbine. I also must add that he looked extremely hot. Then Michael Moore is just awesome. It was weird that the beginning of the documentary strarts off in the state I live in. That being Michigan. I never knew that Michael Moore was from Michigan.
So that is what I was just watching. My boyfriend just left and I might go watch more of it and then just rewind it to the part we were at when he comes over tomorrow.

If you watch one of his early films, Roger & Me, you would be hammered with that fact over and over again. It's about his hometown of Flint, Michigan and how it went downhill when the auto industry left town.

I just saw A LOVE SONG FOR BOBBY LONG. I think this is one of John Travolta's best performances on film. I never considered him a great actor ( or good for that matter), but a solid screen presence. This is a film that a lot of people may have not heard about. It does have strong langauge and alcohol abuse, but it's the character relationships and the performances that make this film memorable and worth seeing.

Technically, it's not a documentary. There was an effort made to revoke his Oscar, as the movie does not fit the technical definition of a documentary. There are several good website detailing where and how, plus giving evidence that much of the information and statistics he supplies are false.
He also is not from Flint as he implied in Roger & Me, he grew up in a more affluent suburb of Flint.
Last night I watched Crazy Little Thing. Super-duper mid-90s indie, back when movies about relationships were all the rage. It had heart, and the performances were good, but it ultimately trapped itself in it's own formulaic cliches.

Doesn't Michael Moore tie all of his films to Flint in some way? Farenheit 911 had some military family footage from Flint.

I watched an old John Woo movie called Hard-Boiled. It was the most violent movie I've ever seen as far as gun shoot outs. Overall it wasn't very good as far as story, acting and dialog went.

"The Five Star Stories"
One of the most beautiful animes I've ever seen, and unfortunately, one of the most difficult to follow. ADV, the distributor in the US, released this anime with linear notes, in order to help viewers understand the background and importance of characters. Unfortunately, renting from Blockbuster Online meant that I didn't get the linear notes pamplet. In addition, this anime is presented with subtitles, not dubbed (most ADV-relased animes have both dubbed and subbed versions on the same dvd). While I often like to watch anime with subtitles, it's often easier to follow a difficult storyline with the dubbed option.
Based on the first volume of a long-running manga series, Five Star Stories tells the tale of a love story between a fatima (a human-like android) named Lachesis, and a pretty-boy mecha mechanic named Ladios Sopp (who is much more then what he seems). Fatimas are created to become the pilots of Mortar Headds, giant fighting robots (what else?) and are paired with Headdliners, humans that command the robots, during a ceremony called a debut. Lachesis, along with her sisters, first met Sopp as a child, and fell in love with him. Most fatimas are subject to mind control, but Lachesis' creator did not subject Lachesis and her sisters to it. It is time for Lachesis' debut, and Soop is agonizing over whether or not to save her, knowing that their destiny is to bring major changes to the Joker Galaxy.
Although the story is complex, there are a number of elements derivitive of other sci-fi and anime sources. A knight wearing a long cloak that covers his face and body wields a light-saber like weapon. The creepy duke overseeing the debut, and his two creepy sons, reminds me of an equally creepy baron and his two nephews...from Dune. And, of course, there are the giant robots, found frequently in sci-fi anime.
I'd recommend only for the most ardent anime fan. Although the illustration style is beautiful, the story is difficult to follow.
Rated TV-14 for voilence (light sabers do slice, after all) and adult themes.

Shaolin Soccer. It's not a movie everyone will like, but it's really crazy as far as the typical Stephen Chow humor and antics. He is the star & director of the current Kung Fu Hustle.

Haven't seen Shaolin Soccer yet, but the word is that the English version was seriously chopped up by Miramax, so that they almost totally rewrote the storyline. They ended up releasing both versions on the DVD because there was such outcry. Basically, they did to it what they would have done to Hero if Tarantino hadn't stepped in with that one.

I just saw a movie called:
Dragon's World: A Fantasy Made Real
it's rated PG
My 8 year old son LOVED it! It's totally make believe done in the style of a documentry so I had to make sure he was clear that this was a fantasy. He understood. The graphics were really cool and the movie explored all the science behind how a dragon's body is able to breathe fire and fly and all that. I give it 3 and a half stars out of five. (The acting was horrid.)

That's why I watched the Chinese version. I hate it when movie studios edit a film from it's original content just to make it more American-ized.

I don't know which version I watched, but it was....three years ago? And a Korean bootleg? So I'm going to assume it was the original. Loved it.
Amityville Horror - a bit slow-placed, good for a few jumps. My friend kept going, "It's Van Wilder!"
(a movie I would not recommend)
I haven't seen the original movie in years, but I think it was scarier. This one got more interesting closer to the end, when it was discovered why the house was "evil," but didn't delve too much into that aspect of the plot.
See only if you like being startled.
Watched Maria Full of Grace last night, interesting enough, good performances, but the ending was too tidy and neat. It's about a Colombian girl who becomes a drug mule, focusing on her experience.

Last night I finally saw dIg!, about the Brian Jonestown Massacre and the Dandy Warhols, two bands I've never been into.
It should be required watching for any band thinking they're gonna "make it." Some really great scenes and quotes and "lessons from the road" caught on film.
I mean, these cats are just CLASSIC musicians, the egos! The drama!
I really got sucked into it, but I saw so many people and scenes that reminded me of people and scenes I've known/been a part of - it was almost nostalgic to watch.
Unless you're a fan of the bands (which I'm kinda thinkin' none of you are), a musician yourself (or a chronic musican dater, like I seem to be) or interested in "the biz," you might be bored, though, watching people bicker and get drunk and play music.
1,700 hours of footage, recorded over 7 years, of the two bands, culled into 1 hour and 47 minutes.
I watched it again this morning with the BJM commentary, and will watch it with the DW and the filmmakers commentaries.
When it comes to docs like this, I like to get the whole scoop from all parties involved.

Great acting, direction, screenplay, and story. However: Heavy on the sin element. There were a few scenes that were offensive to me. Viewer beware.

Poor Paul. One of the most under-rated actors around. He carried that film, as he did American Splendor. He manages to make the most miscreant er, miscreants sympathetic. He was awesome in American Splendor. He so carried this movie despite the other guy's (mechanic from Wings?!) overbearing personality. He was engaging with his sad, subtle little looks of anguish. It was so heartwrenching to watch that scene between him and Virgina Madson on the porch. *sigh* I felt sorry for him.

I thought the two of them deserved to try their luck at romance, despite their less than honest beginnings. He was robbed when she got so angry about the infidelity of the other guy and her friend. As if that had anything to do with the two of them and their chemestry. I was glad when she finally called him. The guy needed a break in the string of disappoinments, don't you think?
