I miss the outdoor games my sister and I used to play together. We played a simple one called Annie Over where she would get on one side of the house and I'd be on the other, and we'd throw a ball back and forth over the house to each other. We had a little place underneath some pine trees in back of the house where we'd have tea parties. The area around our house was hilly, and we spent hours riding our red wagon downhill again and again. At school we girls played with jump ropes, hula hoops and jacks. It seems to me that a lot of kids these days have abandoned such "low-tech" games for video games, which makes me a little sad.

(((((((Zippy))))))) How come you hated it? Barbies, kickball, red rover (I was/am large, so no one could stop me), playing catch with my uncles, making paperdolls with my mom......just playing with my toys in general, I had almost every one in existence (only child). Going camping with my grandpa for 4 weeks every summer was another great memory. We had walky talkies and I remember he'd play "cops" with me, or he used it to keep track of me while I was playing away from camp. He also took me fishing and taught me to ride without training wheels. I used to stay with family friends on their ranch in the summer too, and they ad a lot of property and a bunch of animals. I remember blowing up cow poop with M80's. Did you know cow poop is flammable? We blew up bee hives and ant hills too...that was pretty cool. Shooting pop cans and cyotes and fribies and fish and anything else that was either a nuesance or edible. Even though we were poor, my childhood was VERY rich with memories of family and good times.

We had what seemed to be non-stop baseball games. Sometimes it was like the movie "The Sandlot", we didn't keep score, just played the game all day long. We'd break for lunch and supper and then play until we couldn't see any more. Then we'd pick it up again first thing in the morning. We also had lights for our basketball court, so we'd play until midnight, or later.

I miss waking up, heading straight outside, and only coming back in for meals and bedtime. Yes, even in the Canadian winters.

I miss spending weeks with my Grandmother during the summer. I miss that one summer before they developed the pond by the grade school. There were acres of cattails. We trampled them down to create rooms, mazes, halls, secret passage ways. It was a blast.

Riding bikes all day long, playing with Barbies, swimming from pj's to pj's (never got dressed - was in the pool all day!), and playing red light green light!

swinging hoola hoop jump rope we lived at a lake, and we would spend all day with friends at the lake... and it was awesome! So, I miss the lake and those friends from that time.

Reading. I read a book a day in jr. high, but now that I'm an adult with "resonsibilities," I never have time to read any more.

I miss climbing trees in my grandmother's yard, building "forts" with my cousins in the woods, camping with most of the family at the lake, spending the night with my grandparents and waiting for my grandfather to get home (he drove 18-wheeler and I'd run out to greet him), picking blackberries for making jelly and cobbler. One of the biggest things I miss is Christmas with the entire family. We'd all pile in my grandparents' house (probably 20-25 of us), visit, eat, beg to open present, sing Christmas carols, call my great-grandparents (when they got too old to travel down) and sing "We Wish You A Merry Christmas", and THEN open presents. I really miss that. Our family was so close. We've lost a few since then, of course.

I used to love just going out in the woods and exploring for hours and hours. Although this summer I've been able to do that again. It started out with my sister and I wanting to go out looking for mushrooms (with no luck) but realizing how fun it is to just get out there even without a goal. To just wander and see what discoveries you come upon. I've been getting out there at least once sometimes more each week since April and it is wonderful! Another thing I do miss from my childhood is spending time out at the lake where my grandparents lived...swimming...kayaking...fishing...the campfires in the evenings where the neighbors all stopped in. My grandma had to sell the place a few years back when it got to be too much for her to keep up...plus she needed to be closer to town. But I have other family that has some property on the other side of the lake and everynow and then when we go boating and we pass my grandma's place I still get kind of emotional. I hate seeing other people there. Kind of feels like they're invading a place in my heart. My family and I try to tell ourselves it's just a house and we still have each other but boy...it's still hard to not be able to go there anymore like we used to.

I miss going outside in the morning and not coming in except to eat and go to bed. My brothers and I grew up in a very small town and we were allowed to ride our bikes all over. It was perfectly safe. We rode and rode and rode, all summer long, and climbed trees and explored the woods. And the summers are very long in Oklahoma. I miss playing Barbie dolls with my friends and cousins. I loved Barbies. I miss playing with my younger brother. We got along so well (for the most part). We had big imaginations and had pretend adventures all the time. We'd also get silly -- we'd get a cassette recorder and blank tape and record ourselves doing and saying goofy things and then laugh ourselves silly.

Childhood was not a happy time for me either so it's hard for me to pick something I miss about it.

Playing with barbies and toy horses and stuffed animals with my closest-in-age sister; playing on the swingset, monkeybars and etc. at the playground right next to our house. (it was one of those HUGE monkeybars that they don't make anymore!). Playing outside games i.e. tag, bear in the woods, etc. And playing outside until after dark which made the games scaryfun! There are so many good memories...my childhood was actually my favorite time of life so far, lol.

Other than the freedom of not having responsibilities and my 115 lb body that could move anywhere and way I wanted and nerv got tired.. nothing. Because everything I want to do I do. I still color. I still swing on swings at the park, etc. I am still in contact with all the people from my childhood whom I would want contact with... There is a park that the renovated that was made of tractor tires. I do miss that. I have a toy/game collection that I am constantly enlarging. I work with kids (well, right now I work with young adults! But typically I work with kids) and I play with kids whenever I can! Other than the reality that I have responsibilities, I refuse to "grow up." I do regret that it is not socially acceptable for adults to do the things that kids can get away with--wearing a fairy costume to the store... dancing and singing in public. I break those rules whenever I can without being too disruptive, ie I push the buttons on musical toys/wind up the music boxes in the store, stop to look at ladybugs and caterpillars, giggle hysterically chasing crayfish in the creek. I think if adults miss something from childhood, they should try to recapture it!! I have thought it would be fun to have a day care/fun center for adults- where they can come and build with blocks and blow bubbles and play in finger paint. And just stop being serious and grown up for a little while! Tara P
