blue_orchid - it's very sad, but dance music is one of the only genres that Christian music hasn't quite caught up in yet. However, there are a few underdogs that are worth checking out.

DBA
Ultrabeat (careful - a secular band from the same country has the same name, so check lyrics to make sure you have the right one!)
World Wide Message Tribe
(several Rebecca St. James songs are dance)

Let me know if you find any more - I love dance music!

New stuff or older 80's stuff instead? Also, Christian or secular?

There are a couple of older threads on the board that discussed this as well - you might want to hunt those down and see what was said. I can't remember who all was discussed.

Since no one has mentioned Andy Hunter, I will. Both of his CDs (well, one CD and one EP) are excellent. Also, Scott Blackwell, Code of Ethics, DJ Maj, and pretty much anything on the N-Soul or Plastiq labels would get you started.

Ah, yes. I don't really consider Andy Hunter or Code of Ethics dance, which would be why I missed those. You could call them techno I suppose, but they're too erratic to be dance.

Anyway, i'm gonna check out a few of those myself - thanks for the info!

Since you said secular as well, here are some from that category. From the top of my head here are a few electro dance bands: Daft Punk, MSTRKRFT, Chromeo, I Am the World Trade Center, Plastic Operator, Justice, and Muscles. These next ones are dance with more of a rock edge: The Rapture, The Long Blondes, The Gossip, LCD Soundsystem, The Presets, Shy Child, and The Ting Tings.

I haven't heard of most of those, but i'd watch out for Daft Punk. I bought a CD some years back, and was rudely assaulted with the f-bomb repeatedly in the same song.

Although the vast majority of secular dance artists have one or more highly sexual songs per cd, I like at least some of:
Uniting Nations
Cascada
iio
Gigi D'agostino

I don't know which album of Daft Punk's that would have assaulted you with the f-bomb. I've never been that big of a fan, the only album that really struck me as something special was Discovery. From what I can remember, that one was clean. It had One More Time, Digital Love...and Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger which Kanye West sampled in his hit song Stronger on his last album. I'll go ahead and elaborate more on the ones I mentioned, so you don't have any more Daft Punk-like problems.

MSTRKRFT are like Daft Punk, but certainly with no explicit lyrics. Chromeo's lyrics could almost be interpreted sexually, but they're actually just about dancing, taking the lead as a male while dancing. I Am the World Trade Center are fun electro pop that sounds like Blondie with techno beats, no explicit lyrics. Plastic Operator are the same, except they don't sound like Blondie. I think Justice are supposedly Christian, they're from France...who knows. They had a hit on MTV with D.A.N.C.E., that's an amazing video. I remember a year or two ago hearing their first EP, which had the single called Waters of Nazareth. But on that same EP, it had a remix that featured some profanity. If they're not Christian, they're heavily influenced by it. I'd recommend them the highest out of what I listed. I haven't listened to too much of Muscles, can't give you much advice there. The Rapture aren't explicit, from what I can remember...neither are The Long Blondes. The Gossip have become angry disco, she has a terrific voice and there are some great dance songs. LCD Soundsystem...I can't remember much about his lyrics...I can't remember much about Shy Child either. The Ting Tings are getting airplay on VH1, they also have a song on a recent IPod commercial. They're really fun, and don't have any explicit lyrics. I hope that helps a little more.

I guess I misunderstood what exactly you were looking for. I've always considered techno a type of dance music, since it's played at clubs, raves, etc. If a more popish type of music is what you're looking for, I'd suggest Zoe Girl or possibly Superchic(k).

Zoe Girl - yes, at times.

Superchick - NEVER. Awesome band, but about as far away from dance music Paul Simon.

While "dance" as a style is often misunderstood to include any kind of electronic music, it's modern connotation is actually that of a club or rave beat with a "boom boom boom" beat or a variation thereof. It tends to involve much layering and a smooth, consistent beat.

Good examples:

DJ Sammy
Darude
Eiffel 65

Does this mean I shouldn't bother with their re-mix album if I'm looking for dance music? I haven't heard it, but I assumed the re-mixes were done with dance music in mind. Anyone heard this and have an opinion? Just curious.

I think that I recall it being remixed in the same approximate style. Remix does not = dance remix, necessarily. Usually that's what songs are remikxed into, but not nearly always. I'd check it out on their MySpace Music page or some music site.

It's funny because "blue" by Eiffel 65 is my new favorite song...totally love it. I have been wondering about dance music too, so this post is helpful to me as well.

Wow - there are SO many broken links on that page! I hate it when Christian sites make us all look campy by not checking up on such simple things.

Are you talking about the first one? Yeh, I haven't been there in a while...so sorry about that.
