The women in my family all seem to go by their middle names ... my first name is actually Stephanie, but I go by my middle name, Kara. Our dd is Roberta Ilene, but goes by Ilene. This actually started back when my great-grandmother called my gran by her middle name. The only 'problems' it has caused is when we have to go to the hospital or somewhere else where they 'need' to use the first name (like crossing the border) ... if you haven't trained the kids in their full names at that point, it can end up holding things up quite a bit (the whole having to explain that yes, it IS their name, but they don't USE that name, etc) With dd's name, we knew from the get go that she would be called Ilene (after dh's grandmother) but Roberta Ilene O__ flowed a lot nicer that Ilene Roberta O___. Same with my name ... Stephanie Kara R___ versus Kara Stephanie R___ ... just rolls off the tongue a lot easier. Kim -- take it easy this weekend ... the projected humidex here is 42 ... and the expected high in terms of actual temp is 31, but it is already 35 and still climbing.

Sorry to double post, but just wanted to add that I think nicknames are wonderful! Each of my kids have several pet names from DH and I. I once heard "A child with many names is a child loved many ways." And it's so true! Each of my little ones nicknames reflects a different part of their personality that I adore about them. Wait until your little one is born, they'll tell you a lot about what to call them!!! --Kat

All of our kids have nicknames that we never would have thought of giving them before we really knew them.

Nobody responded - does Leia Eleanor sound bad together? I don't think it sounds bad, but maybe too many vowels? You have to consider how often you will be saying both names together too. If not often, maybe it doesn't matter. My daughter goes by Hannah Faith almost as much as she does by Hannah...and we didn't know that would happen until after she was born. Do you have any other options you have thought of?

Well then, I think it's fine. I think Leia Eleanor totally passes the yell test. I'm not sure if Esther Hope does...but we'll work on it. Hehehe...

ORIGINAL: Royal.Fortress It's hard because we've been planning to name a girl Eleanor for over a year and have already told his Grandma (who she's being named after) what the baby's name will be. Then his cousin named their baby 'Elly' after his wife's Grandma ... 4 weeks ago. What are the chances that their grandmas were Eleanor and Elly??? So now we're kinda feeling stuck ... and then with my sister starting on the whole her son was named after my dad when originally he wasn't and now I don't want to name the baby William if that's the case, but Brad still loves William and isn't sold on Willem ... yeah. Frustrated. What is grandma's middle name??? Would it be an acceptable name to use? (For example, dh's stepmom -- the MIL I actually like -- has the middle name Therese, so if we were to name a child after her, we would use her middle name rather than her first ... #1 to avoid confusion at family gatherings, and #2 to avoid the 'natural' mother becoming upset by using name of step-mom ...)

Can't remember if this was on the list of 'no' names, but what about calling her Elle, pronounce 'L'? Personally, I'd cautious about the name Leia. My second is name Luke and we get Star Wars jokes ALL THE TIME (many of them from his big brother no less). Given that Leia's almost exclusively Star Wars, I'd be prepared for that. --Kat

It's too pretty sounding to be yelled in an angry tone!! LOL I agree. But so is Hannah Faith and we manage that when she's in trouble.

Okay ... I've tweaked the poll ... in the original vote, girls were leading 13-11 ... so now it is gender AND arrival date ... happy voting!

I voted BOY -- between due date and week 41 Maybe you could find another name you really like and use Eleanor as a middle name. If I were you, I would use William and not worry about what your sister named her son.

If you really want to use Eleanor, what's wrong with Leia, or Leah as a nickname? I personally like Ellie as a nickname, or Ella... but you have reasons for not wanting those. but... yeah... what Ryanne said. You don't seem sold on it, so I'd "toss it around" a bit more until you are sold on it.
