That's the same as me - I introduce myself as Kim, not Kimberly ... but that's a pretty obvious short form.

ok well yeah I could have probably chosen a better example...but my point was you don't HAVE to introduce yourself by your name. My brother goes by his middle name (named after my dad...Richard Steven...my dad went by Richard, brother went by Steven growing up, now they both go by Richard though). Anyway...when people asked him his name he would tell them Steven...he never went through the whole "Well, my name is Richard but I go by Steven". Most of his graduating class (which was very small...only 12 people) didn't even know his first name wasn't Steven until graduation...it just never came up.
Then he went off to college and messed everything up by wanting to go by his first name ....lol

True. I think it's a me thing. I never understood why people didn't just name their kid the name they wanted to call them. I don't really get the whole call them by their second name thing ... make their second name their first name!! LOL I'm just weird!

The women in my family all seem to go by their middle names ... my first name is actually Stephanie, but I go by my middle name, Kara. Our dd is Roberta Ilene, but goes by Ilene. This actually started back when my great-grandmother called my gran by her middle name.

The only 'problems' it has caused is when we have to go to the hospital or somewhere else where they 'need' to use the first name (like crossing the border) ... if you haven't trained the kids in their full names at that point, it can end up holding things up quite a bit (the whole having to explain that yes, it IS their name, but they don't USE that name, etc)

With dd's name, we knew from the get go that she would be called Ilene (after dh's grandmother) but Roberta Ilene O__ flowed a lot nicer that Ilene Roberta O___. Same with my name ... Stephanie Kara R___ versus Kara Stephanie R___ ... just rolls off the tongue a lot easier.

Kim -- take it easy this weekend ... the projected humidex here is 42 ... and the expected high in terms of actual temp is 31, but it is already 35 and still climbing.

Yeppers, Mom named me Katrina, intending to call me Katie. When I was born, she decided that I looked and acted more like a Trina. And Trina I've been to my family ever since. Then I hit high school and dubbed myself Kat. Now professionally I'm Katrina, Trina to family, and Kat to the online world.

We're one of those horrible families that call their son by his middle name . FIL is Billy Marshall Mc____, DH is William Marshall Mc____, and oldest son is William Marshall Mc____, II but we call him Marshall 'cause we've already got a Billy and a Will in the family.

Sorry to double post, but just wanted to add that I think nicknames are wonderful! Each of my kids have several pet names from DH and I. I once heard "A child with many names is a child loved many ways." And it's so true! Each of my little ones nicknames reflects a different part of their personality that I adore about them. Wait until your little one is born, they'll tell you a lot about what to call them!!!

So true! All of our kids have nicknames that we never would have thought of giving them before we really knew them.

Oh, I don't doubt that they'll get real nicknames after they're born - I know you can't predict those!!!

I'm just more worried about short forms of real names. 'Eleanor' just seems like such an old lady name that I'm not sure I'm going to want to call her Eleanor all the time ... in fact, I *know* I'm not going to want to call her Eleanor! LOL It wouldn't be an issue if people would just stop stealing our short forms Maybe, though, we shouldn't name her Eleanor if we're planning on not calling her that?

Nobody responded - does Leia Eleanor sound bad together?

Kim it doesn't flow right for me.

But she's your kid.

I personally would pick another name entirely. One that either had easier shortenings, or atleast ones you guys could agree on

Chris is the same way. Here in the South, it is REALLY common for a boy the have his dad's name as his first name and have a different middle name that he goes by. My dear husband is a Yankee and just doesn't get it. LOL!! (we love to tease each other about being a "country girl" and a "Yankee."

My original favorite name for a boy was Christopher David, and we would call him David, but Chris doesn't like that.

By the way, we picked a middle name but aren't sharing yet.

My dad's name is David, so to avoid confusion, right now we call the baby Baby David. Later it will be Little David of Lil D. I'm not sure what he will be after that, but by that point he will probably have some ideas of his own of what he wants to be called.

I don't think it sounds bad, but maybe too many vowels? You have to consider how often you will be saying both names together too. If not often, maybe it doesn't matter. My daughter goes by Hannah Faith almost as much as she does by Hannah...and we didn't know that would happen until after she was born.

Do you have any other options you have thought of?

It's hard because we've been planning to name a girl Eleanor for over a year and have already told his Grandma (who she's being named after) what the baby's name will be. Then his cousin named their baby 'Elly' after his wife's Grandma ... 4 weeks ago. What are the chances that their grandmas were Eleanor and Elly??? So now we're kinda feeling stuck ... and then with my sister starting on the whole her son was named after my dad when originally he wasn't and now I don't want to name the baby William if that's the case, but Brad still loves William and isn't sold on Willem ... yeah. Frustrated.

Thanks for responding about the name - I can't tell yet if *I* think it flows right!

Wuhoo!!

Yeah, although I know lots of people who go by their middle names and know it isn't a big deal, it's just definitely not for us!

Every one of our names choices had to go through a strict "Yell Test." Can you yell the full name easily when they are misbehaving?

Mmmm ... Eleanor is the *only* girl's name we've discussed, since it was to be used for the firstborn girl. Brad is actually the one who brought up 'Leia' though, and using it either as a shortform or as the first name with Eleanor as the second.

They'd probably be said together only when she's in trouble

Well then, I think it's fine. I think Leia Eleanor totally passes the yell test. I'm not sure if Esther Hope does...but we'll work on it. Hehehe...

What is grandma's middle name??? Would it be an acceptable name to use? (For example, dh's stepmom -- the MIL I actually like -- has the middle name Therese, so if we were to name a child after her, we would use her middle name rather than her first ... #1 to avoid confusion at family gatherings, and #2 to avoid the 'natural' mother becoming upset by using name of step-mom ...)

Can't remember if this was on the list of 'no' names, but what about calling her Elle, pronounce 'L'?

Personally, I'd cautious about the name Leia. My second is name Luke and we get Star Wars jokes ALL THE TIME (many of them from his big brother no less). Given that Leia's almost exclusively Star Wars, I'd be prepared for that.

If it's only going to be used in times of trouble it might not be so bad sounding.. Walk around the house a while and just say it outloud? That's what I did when we were still deciding. Some names sounded great with Grace as middle, others sounded horrible.

What did your sister name her son? Liam right?

Name yours William. Who cares. You may end up calling him Will or Billy or Bill or Willy and never Liam. What is she going to call him, Lee?

My boss is named William but everyone calls him Bill, it took me a while to clue in to who this "Bill" person was..
I just always called him Doc. Then I got mad at him one day and called him William. He raised his eyebrows and knew he was in trouble. Hasn't happened since.

It's too pretty sounding to be yelled in an angry tone!! LOL

Kara - good question!! I have no idea what his grandma's middle name is!

Kat - yeah, I know the chances of Star Wars jokes is high. I'm actually a huge fan ( ) ... but I still think it's a really pretty name! 'Elle' is just soooooo not anything we'd ever call our child. Not to mention in French it means "she" ... and that's just too odd for this Canuck!

Brandy - yeah, she named her son Liam. We are planning to use 'Will' as his name regardless of whether his full name is William or Willem, so we'll probably just stick with William.

quote:

Name yours William. Who cares.

LOL - I love you, Brandy!! Thanks for that ... I think I needed to hear it!

Okay ... I've tweaked the poll ... in the original vote, girls were leading 13-11 ... so now it is gender AND arrival date ... happy voting!

Kim, I would say go back to the drawing board with Eleanor. You don't seem like your totally in love with the name, so toss around a couple new ones

I voted BOY -- between due date and week 41

Maybe you could find another name you really like and use Eleanor as a middle name. If I were you, I would use William and not worry about what your sister named her son.

If you really want to use Eleanor, what's wrong with Leia, or Leah as a nickname? I personally like Ellie as a nickname, or Ella... but you have reasons for not wanting those.

but... yeah... what Ryanne said. You don't seem sold on it, so I'd "toss it around" a bit more until you are sold on it.
