This is inspired by the thread on wedding rings.

Whether you are divorced/widdowed, What did you do with your wedding dress? (I just came accross mine while cleaning out a closet.)

woodwind228 -> RE: Wedding Dress? (5/25/2008 6:51:58 PM)

sold it

collie1 -> RE: Wedding Dress? (5/25/2008 7:37:15 PM)

From my first marriage, in my daughter's closet. From my 2nd marriage in my closet, I'll most likely sell it at a yard sale, I doubt I'll ever fit into it again.

pruned -> RE: Wedding Dress? (5/25/2008 7:56:05 PM)

Hmmm. What did I do with my wedding gown from my previous marriage? Good question! I don't know. Mom's attic?

I just cleaned out my closet and along with 6 boxes of other clothing, I gave away the suit I wore at my last wedding.

John_O -> RE: Wedding Dress? (5/25/2008 8:26:50 PM)

I've got the one from my first wedding, but since I'd probably nveer fit into it I'll save it for the Girl[:D]

I thot I'd save mine for my daughter if she wanted it, but she has already outgrown it (she's only 13, but I was WAAAAAAAAAY underweight when I got married). She now thinks she is fat......[8|]

leesw -> RE: Wedding Dress? (5/31/2008 1:57:08 AM)

I know lots of ladies who kept their's. Some even had it put in an airtight bag so it would stay preserved with smells (perfume and traces of his cologne).

But after a divorce I can see selling....or burning it.

Jeannie - perhaps she could use the material to either use in her own dress or make a veil out of it??

Tinkerbell_ -> RE: Wedding Dress? (5/31/2008 9:02:37 AM)

My grandmother made a baby gown for me out of my mother's wedding dress. That's an idea too. Or use pieces of it for a quilt.

......... I hung onto mine for years....

Finally was able to part with it....

I sold it today for $5 at a garage sale....

When the people were looking at it... all of the sudden.... it was like I was able to let go....

I'm thankful...

........ for freedom from the past.

My mother is a master seamstress. When I got married, she and I went and tried on every single dress. When I found "the" one, she and I looked it over carefully, she nodded at me, and then she went home and copied expertly. She spent weeks working on it like a full-time job. She hand-beaded and sequined for hours.

My dress is a treasured memory of that time in my life. It's a beautiful gift from my mom, and it is, after all, part of the marriage my daughter came from. So I am saving it for her. She has said she wants Grandma to alter it for her someday. I hope that happens. Grandma would be beyond thrilled to update it, re-make it, re-model it. Heck, she might even let Bek go sleeveless!

The fact that my wedding turned out to be the beginning of a long hard journey for me doesn't take away the love that was sewn into my dress.

Now THAT'S very cool!

What a wonderful and precious story! Thanks for sharing.

My wedding dress was not actually a formal wedding dress, it was a white lace dress that I had one Easter. My "wedding" was rushed because he was a reservist who got called up for active duty in 1991. So since the dress was white I used it to get married in. It's very pretty, but I don't think I'll ever want to wear it again.

Focusing -> RE: Wedding Dress? (6/9/2008 3:51:57 PM)

My wedding dress was a tea length trumpet skirt, with a long top. Ivory lace and very beautiful. I gave it, and the veil, to a friend so her daughters could play dress up. The top was long enough to be the "dress" for them. [:)]

This is what I have always dreamed of doing with my wedding dress(I've never been married (yet?) ).
For me, it would be a baptism gown, because we do baptize babies, and go way longer than the feet.

hotsaucygma -> RE: Wedding Dress? (6/10/2008 1:45:47 PM)

I think mine is still stuffed in the back of a closet... I had planned on giving it to Goodwill or something. I didn't have daughters, but would probably not really want them wearing tht dress anyway... since the marriage didn't exactly work out well.

drmomjoyce -> RE: Wedding Dress? (6/11/2008 7:38:28 AM)

This is not about my wedding dress as I have never had occasion to wear one, but I hope you dont mind me posting anyhow. My twin sisters got married about 2 years apart. The first one bought her dress and then the second one remodeled the sleeves and wore the same dress. It ended up with the second sister until it was cut up and a long baptism gown was made out of the dress. It was to the best of my knowledge (I dont live close to my sisters right now) in the dressup box and the kids would dress up in what was left of it. It has been quite well used.

That's sweet! [:)]

My first wedding dress (1982; traditional long, white bridal gown) . . . I have absolutely no idea what I did with it; I most probably discarded it early on after the divorce.

There was (obviously) no sentimental value in my first wedding dress (neither pre-wedding nor post-divorce).

There was A LOT of sentimental value in my second wedding dress . . .

It was a light sage-green flowy lace gown that, back in the late '90s, used to belong to someone else until she brought it to church one day and said, "This is for you." I instantly loved it (not as a wedding dress; just as another dress).

A couple of years later (2000), I moved to Wyoming.

A couple of years later (2002), I met CS.

5 months later, we started dating.

1 month later, we went to a going-away party for some friends of mine.
CS came to pick me up, and I was wearing my light sage-green flowy lace gown . . . it was the first time he had ever seen the dress, and he absolutely loved it. He kept telling me how beautiful I looked in it.

About a week later, CS called me up and said he wanted to do a Western dress-up photo-shoot of the two of us on the property of where the Moulton Barn is. He choose one of the smaller buildings on the property and we spent a couple of hours posing for what would later become our very own "Old Tyme" photos (CS was a film-photographer and he hand-developed all his black and whites and also did his own sepia / brown-toning.) I wore my light-sage-gree flowy lace gown and he wore some of his dressy Western garb (including his 2 pearl-handled six-shooters). We had such a blast that day; just him, me, the Tetons, that rustic old building, his camera equipment and some curious onlooking buffalo.

He titled the pictures from that day, "The Cowboy and His Lady".

I didn't wear that dress again until 2004 . . . we had chosen the summer of '04 to get married, he asked me if I would wear that gown for the wedding.
I enthusiastically did so - and he wore his same outfit from the photo shoot, 2 years earlier.

After our wedding, the gown went back in to the closet and I only wore it one more time . . .
When he died in 2005, it was an absolute no-brainer as to what to I should wear to his memorial service . . . my light-sage green flowy lace gown that he loved and never stopped talking about.

After that, I realized that I would never again wear that beautiful dress; and so last year as I was packing to relocate, I donated it to one of the local thrift shops in hopes that some other woman would get a chance to enjoy it. I would much rather such a wonderful dress be used and enjoyed rather than simply hang in a closet never to be worn again.

My memories of that dress will always be with me, though . . . as will the pictures of our photo shoot and also our wedding-day photos.

Hey Ladies;

There is a VERY cool thing you can do with your wedding dresses...you can donate them to a breast cancer foundation called Brides Against Breast Cancer. They tell you exactly how to send it, even let you decided how much it is worth (for tax purposes), and even if it is yellowed a little bit, they can fix it.

They clean them up and repair them, then have fashion show auctions where you can go and buy one of the gowns--and all the proceeds go to bless breast cancer victims with a wish they want fulfilled.

Here's the link.

Bridesagainstbreastcancer.org

So if you still have one hanging around...this is an awesome way to add another sweet memory or to help heal a painful one...

Oooh! Awesome Esther! I was just thinking about that earlier...what in the heck am I going to do with my dress?

With fuel and food prices the way they are, it wouldn't be unreasonable to sell it. However, I just don't want to deal with the hassel of it. It's still in the box from the cleaners 8 years ago and can easily be shipped.

Thanks for the tip! *huggles*

hotsaucygma -> RE: Wedding Dress? (6/27/2008 11:04:57 AM)

I agree! Thanks for the idea. If I ever dig it out of the closet, I'll look up the link again! Hmm, it's probably time to clean closets anyway, right?

ShallbeRebuilt -> RE: Wedding Dress? (6/27/2008 3:28:01 PM)

and don't forget when it's time to buy another one [;)][;)]

You can find an auction near you and get them much cheaper...
