Do you do all the vocals at once?

We will lay all the vocals at once, then go back and work on them one at a time usually. It's great when you can record them all at once, nothing sounds better than getting everyone to click at once and be able to sing the songs together, all at once.

I guess it is just me, but Being the only group that sings an entire concert with just live piano, (sometimes bass guitar), and 2 Mics I caqn honestly say that there is no greater power felt in the songs than when you do it that way. When tracks and stack are used, which is 90% percent of the time (sadly enough), It gets so loud and confusiong for the listener that the message is many times lost. There is such freedom when you do it live. If you use stack and tracks, you are bound to those. You have to do the same thing every night. Again, I enjoy many of the groups that use tracks, (NOT STACKS) but it dous not have the same feeling as live. Will ya'll still be my friend? lol

I will dixiebass because I will most likely have to have tracks until I get going fully but I prefer a live band to tracks any day of the week. the best live album ever made SG wise is Come FLy With The McGruders in my humble opinion, and to do what they did on that album, tracks can never do

Dixiebass1 I think the Dixie Echoes are an excellent example of minimum instruments, great sound. I also agree with the "greater power" part of your statement. I hear the Dixie Echoes every chance I get, and plan to be at Spirit of The Suwannee in a couple of weeks.

Do you use any kind of effects such as delay with the vocals?

I always try to record the vocals as "naked" as possible. I like to think the people buying CD's that I have produced are getting as close to the "real thing" as possible. While I haven't produced anything for the "big" groups, I am still pretty selective in what I work on. There's hardly a week that goes by that I don't turn down someone after listening to a sample. That probably sounds cruel but some artists don't need a producer, they need a vocal coach and the studio is the wrong place to do that when you are paying studio time, engineer time plus my time. It's easier just to turn down the ones where you see where it is going to go ahead of time I guess. But to answer your question, we use anything from delay to a harmonizer when it's warranted.

I'm more interested in whether or not it's creative and good quality. The number of instruments used doesn't make any difference. It's what the players do with those instruments that matters.

I do not think there is a one-size-fits-all answer to this question. For example, I think about the full orchestra that Greater Vision used when recording their "Far Beyond This Place" project, which was very successful and produced several hit songs, not to mention sounding great. I also can think about some of the songs I have enjoyed most at concerts, and many times they were songs with only the piano, even with groups that usually use tracks along with the piano. Good vocals should be the criteria, and big tracks will not cover up poor singing, but fuller tracks are okay when all is done well.

Different strokes for different folks. I like it all if done properly/professionally. I prefer it when every group doesn't sound the same. The Dixie Echoes are great at what they do (two mics/piano/bass) and my favorites at that style but in the same breath I don't want every artist sounding like the Dixie Echoes.

That is a great album, what a band. I have sung all 4 ways. I sang witha group that did only acapella, 1 with a full band, 1 with tracks, and now with just piano, occasional bass and 2 Mics. All of them got the message of Jesus Christ out to the people, but it is so much fun to sing the way I do now. Keep up the GOD work no matter how you do it. Pat

ORIGINAL: Seaton I prefer it when every group doesn't sound the same. if all of them sounded the same, SG would be boring honestly. is what has happened with music in secular scene. the artists get told by labels what to release, when to release it, and what to play and not play. seems like every country singer has to sound the same, rock singers have to sound the same. please dont make SG the same way.

Personally I would be fine with that...or...just adding a drum machine to your set up. BTW..welcome, glad you are here.

ORIGINAL: Quartet_Fan2008 I have a question for y'all . . . say your GOAL is to have a FULL BAND playing behind you on stage, but you're limited by finances which only allow you to hire a piano player. Would you use tracks to fill in the bass and drums (maybe the ocassional fiddle or banjo) until you can afford to have a bass player and drummer come on board? I'm anxious to hear your opinions! that is all I am going to be able to do until I get it going the way I want it.

I keep seeing that everyone uses a piano as the main instrument. I am assuming that this is the acoustic piano. Does anyone use an electric keyboard that can sound like other instruments? Either by itself or in addition to an a regular piano?

Yes, some groups bring electric keyboards with them instead of using in-house pianos. But when they do this, they typically use the "acoustic piano" voice.

Well if the main instrument is a guitar then it's "Country Gospel" unless of course it's REALLY loud and out of tune then its CCM (oops did I say that outloud) LOL j/k you all....

In my opinion the piano as the centerpiece instrument is more tradition than anything else. That and the fact it brings more fullness to a song than anything I can think of.
