Back in the early 70s when I was a teenager I went to a little country church outside of Branchville, SC and saw my first SG quartet... I was totally blown away by the harmony (and their piano player was awesome!) and I was hooked for life! I think the quartet was called the Oakland Quartet out of Charleston, SC, but I could be mistaken. Anyone remember a quartet with that name?

The rest of the story is that all my life since hearing that quartet I wanted to sing in a SG quartet. Then 1 1/2 years ago at age 50 I tried out for a local group in Sumter SC and am now singing tenor!

Wow, talk about a 'blast from the past'! The Oakland Qt was indeed from Charleston, SC and Terry Smoak was the owner/manager. A young man named Robbie Willis wanted to be their drummer so bad he cleaned the bus for them each week to get them to let him play the drums when he was 14 or 15. Robbie later became the drummer for the Nelons and married George Younce's daughter Dana.

Other members included (at various times) Paul Johnson, Jim Hill(not the famous one LOL), Danny Grey, Butch Surratt, Wayne (I forgot his last name- I can't believe that!), Gary Simms, Arthur Chastain and a couple of other guys. Most of these guys went into church ministries over the years rather than other groups.

I was attending Coker College in 1974 and serving as pastor in Cheraw, SC when I and a friend put on a concert in Hartsville, SC at the "Center Theater" featuring THE OAKLAND QUARTET. There for a few years, in the early 70's, this was one of the finest quartets in SC. Not only a good sound but fine Christian young men.

I was a young man back then in the 70's (5 -15), but boy do I remember. They are the reason I own my own SG Quartet today. I have Holy City Quartet based out of Charleston SC today because my dad use to take me monthly to see the Oakland Quartet somewhere around the area. As a matter of fact we are getting ready to do a project of 12 songs using the arrangements of the Oakland Quartet including City of Gold, Cross Medley, I'll Have a New Life, See You In The Rapture, Eastern Gate, He's My Comfort, and Ain't That What It's All About. I have most of the LP's they did and had tracks made from their arrangements. It is gonna be a lot of fun doing this project.

Welcome Mike5566. Glad to see another native South Carolinian posting, though I have moved one state up.
Please keep us posted when you get that recording completed, I would love to here what you did with those Oakland Qt. arrangements.

Our family, "The Brewer Family" sang several times with this group in the early 1970's. One particular event was in 1974 ( I think...long time ago) we sang with them at a "all night New Year's Eve singing" at Coliseum in Charleston, S.C. with "The Statesmen" and several other groups. Back then "all night" meant ALL NIGHT! I remember packing up the bus to leave and the sun was starting to rise outside...Wow, really brings back memories...

Mike I want one of those CDs!!! I kept in touch with most of the guys for a while but haven't talked to any of them in years. Does anyone know how to get in touch with any of them? Danny Grey)from FL) and Paul Johnson(originally from Enterprise, AL) were in Florida the last I heard and Fred (can't remember his name either- gosh I can't believe I forgot his name I had a HUGE crush on him 'back in the day' but he married a former Miss South Carolina I believe) was working with a church near Summerville I think. Jim Hill died with cancer or at least was at the point of death the last time I asked anyone about him.

Arthur Chastain had family in Greenville, SC but I don't know where he ended up. They used to work with Clebe McClary a lot.

Mike I bet our paths crossed even though I'm from the upstate, I came down the road to hear them quite a few times.

Wow! This is neat, 35 years ago.... My family have all gone their seperate ways but all are in the ministry in some form. My older brother is V.P. of Charleston Southern University, mother is a "Concert Pianist", younger brother is in the "Automobile Industry", father passed away in 1990..so that leaves me and I still love and will always love to sing Southern Gospel Music and "tell the greatest love story ever told"!

That is awesome!

Well I just left a message for Terry Smoak (I do hope it's the right one but from my internet investigation it's about the right age and it's the right name) and told him the group's name had come on the SN forums and folks were remembering them.

If it's the right person, I'm sure I'll hear back from him and I'll let you know!

DeeAnn please tell the guys what we are doing. My dad, Paul Bolen, and Terry Smoak worked together, or went to school together, or something and that is how we got to following them. I have never met the guys as an adult or been able to tell them that there music is what hooked this young man from Charleston SC. This is KOOL. I think we may have met one time at NQC talking about Cliff the old bass singer from Safe Harbor. Maybe that wasn't you but for some reason I am thinking it was.

Ok, Mike I didn't realize who you were in the post but yes we did meet! I'm going to try to get Terry over here to see the forums and see if he has any connections from the other guys! (Maybe I don't want him over here I just realized I posted earlier about having a huge crush on one of the guys years ago!!!! )

The Oaklands used to come to Cliff's dad's church back then.

I will post here when the project is done. We have the premixed trax, as of last week, but we are waiting on the individual tracks to use in the studio. Then I will line up studio time. Hopefully by the end of the summer we will have it. "OLD IS GOOD"

Man, this is too cool! I figured they had touched plenty of folks and the chances were good someone who got touched would be on this forum. When you guys track some of them down I want to thank them for lighting a flame in me for SG quartet music! My wife will attest to the fact that something was missing in me all these years... until I started singing in CrossAnchor Quartet!

Mike... I'm a friend of Dave Lethco (with Common Call Quartet). We should get the 3 quartets together for a singing sometime!
