Thank you Nadine!! And now... This thread is officially open for wedding advice. The budget: $5000 The date: 2/21/2009 Colors: Blue, white, silver Wedding Party: 1 bridesmaid groomsman. No flower children, no ringbearers, yadda. Resources: Music (string quartet) probably provided free or discounted. Photography and videography probably provided free or discounted. Some greenery and white Christmas lights available. Venue: no clue. NOT at our church...too small, dirty, unmaintained. Cannot count on any help or participation by grooms parents Also soliciting: Advice to mother of the bride. Answers to question such as: How do I cope with my best friend and sibling chauffeur moving 1300 miles away? What should I do when tempted to fly to groom's parent's town, show up on their doorstep, enter their home (forcibly if necessary), slap them silly until they realize what wonderful persons their son and my daughter are? Where are my keys? How do you prevent bridezilla syndrome? (not that I'm really expecting GP1 to be a bridezilla, but one should be prepared in case, don't you agree?) Looking forward to your ideas! shallbe

What kind of flowers does she like? Its best to pick something in season because it will be cheaper. Ribbons: After Christmas you can find lots of white, blue and silver on clearance. You can use them for decoration along with lights and greenery. Write a letter to the parents. Seal it then burn it. David's Bridal has great prices on dresses. You can usually find some awesome one on their website. For the groom and groomsman you don't have to do tuxes. Just black suits. All you really need is a nice shirt/tie set for both. Since there is only one bridesmaid you can hit up Ross' and they have WONDERFUL prices. $5,000 is a good budget. I had always planned for less of a budget than that. If you have to rent a facility its different though. What about an outdoor wedding?

Yes, we had realized that the colors would be perfect for taking advantage of sales. My favorite idea is the writing of the letter...THEN BURNING it (y'all hold me accountable, now). Actually, in case anybody is interested, I've already begun it. Gotta get the stuff out of my head so I can think clearly. I wonder if the bluebonnets will be out by Feb. 21st? hmmm.... Tuxes: well, actually the suits might be more expensive. Suits=$350. Tux rental=$110. Thanks for the website: I'll show it to GP1. Here's a dress that she really likes, except that she wants it bright white instead of cream. shallbe

What should I do when tempted to fly to groom's parent's town, show up on their doorstep, enter their home (forcibly if necessary), slap them silly until they realize what wonderful persons their son and my daughter are? shallbe to the first question........sometimes you cope...sometimes you don't. it doesn't matter how long she's gone...or how far. you just adjust to the change, mama. and make sure you have a lot of minutes on your cell plan! as to the second question......i've been in your shoes, esther. my ex-husband's mother literally ran screaming & crying out of the room when we told them we were pregnant with my daughter....and it only got worse. i ended up having to forbid him from taking her to his folk's when he had visitation (i was 8 mos pregnant when we got divorced...so it was fortunate that she didn't 'experience'their hurtfulness). i simply refused to allow them to treat her as less than the precious gift from God that she is!! unfortunately, it didn't stop there. some of my 2nd husband's family started shunning her and speaking badly about her (sometimes even right in front of her!) when she reached her early-teens. i finally had to put the law down with him, too. she would not be forced to go with him to his family functions...even if it was 'his' weekend or holiday. he knew better than to fight me on it. you JUST don't come between a mama and her wounded baby. i guess i just have to say you're fortunate that your daughter is a 'grown woman' (as a mama...i just can't say that without shaking my head. smile)...confident and secure in her value to God and to you and your family. my daughter STILL cries every time she and my son and i are together....wondering WHY daddy & his family treat her brother differently (read 'better'). it just breaks my heart. but my attitude is THEY JUST AREN'T WORTHY OF HER. and color me selfish...but i have NO problem not sharing her with them. i learned many, many years ago that i just don't care about their losing out on having this beautiful person in their lives. they made the wrong choice. so be it. i hope that someday soon you, too, can 'let it go,' esther. you really do just have to lay it at God's feet and let Him deal with them and their (obviously inaccurate) opinions. i'll be praying.

In case y'all decide to throw rice at the bride and groom as they depart: prepare a separate, special bag of BBs or even small rocks. Throw them at the Beau's parents and look the other way. Yes, I'm joking!

Wedding plans continue... Any ideas for the following: A way to include all the children in the audience WITHOUT any prior preparation. Children have been a LARGE part of my daughter's life. We would like to have them represented somehow. shallbe

Thanks, Gary; They'll likely do that anyway. And we have plans to have a "childrens' table" at the reception. What we are looking for are ideas for actually including them in the ceremony somehow...thing is, it's got to be easy, free, no-pressure, and not likely to turn into a problem. shallbe

Gary: there's no way to tell...depends on who shows up for the ceremony, and we have lots of friends with small children. Kimberly: she and I were talking about it last night and realized that if we were children and someone gave us a flower but then told us we had to give it away, we'd be sad. So we decided that wouldn't be a good idea. I think we will likely restrict this idea to the reception and not try to get it into the ceremony. shallbe

What if you gave them a card for them to color during the ceremony when they get all squirmish? That way they can give a gift to the couple and yet have something to keep them occupied...

The only possible drawback would be a herd of children with crayons drawing on the walls and pews of the church.
