I posted in the chat thread about it. It was a field trip to which we were treated. I will give a fuller account here, being as this is my own PFY and I can do that without fear of hijacking...
As you may know, I am studying french this summer in an attempt to test out of several required hours of it for my degree. I have a friend who studied it and speaks it fluently, and she is helping me study.
This friend taught a 4 hour camp (1 hour per day) for children on Introductory French at our arts school this summer, and because of the help she has been to me, and also for the experience, I "assisted" at the camp.
Within the last year or perhaps two, this friend met a couple from France who had sold all their belongings, attended boulangerie (french bakery) school, and immigrated to the US to begin their own french bakery here. They chose the city where I work to settle and found my friend who speaks french and of course began a friendship.
These Parisians almost have their bakery ready to open. When they heard that my friend was teaching the camp, they offered to open their bakery for the class to see and bake some bread and do a presentation.
One thing you need to know so that you understand what a delight this was for me is that I LOVE TO BAKE BREAD! I have been a bread baker since I was a little girl, and I have studied it and I have many rather scientific books about it...etc.
So today was the day of the field trip. This french lady had a very nice presentation ready to make to our class. My friend and her two children, myself and GirlPeep4, and three class members (two elementary age girls and one adult acquaintance who also took the class) were escorted into the back baking room. Laid out on the table were neat little labeled piles of different flours, yeast and salt as well as some breads in the different stages of rising and resting. We were surrounded by sparkling equipment: a large water heater/measuring dispenser which stood next to a monstrous mixer/kneader machine. In one corner was the proofing cabinet and in another was the larger oven.
Beatrice (the french lady's name) explained (in french) that she would give the presentation in french so that we could hear what it sounds like for a native to speak the language, while my friend would interpret so that we could understand about the process of bread baking.
French and bread and french bread...I was already in heaven!
She took about an hour to explain the ingredients and each step in making the bread. Her husband came in and also added his comments in french. She would stop every so often and my friend would interpret. What's funny is that I was able to listen and catch most of what Beatrice was saying...and my friend was making it much more simple (maybe for the benefit of the children?) than what was actually said.
Then we were treated to the finished product! YUM!
I have to admit that when I got up this morning, going to the french bakery was the last thing I wanted to do. I didn't want to have the trouble of going. I had much that needed to be accomplished here. I didn't want to be embarrassed by my limited use of the french language. Even though I love my friend and appreciate that God has brought her into my life, building a friendship in the atmosphere of humiliation of studying a foreign language is not the most comfortable way for me to go about it. So I dreaded the awkwardness of that.
But what a wonderful experience I would have missed had I allowed myself to stick at home!
Here is a precious couple who have burned all their bridges at home in France to come here, to the United States. They are brave, they are passionate, they are determined and they are generous! They have a rich foreign heritage which I have had the opportunity to experience for a very little bit of time. It's not likely I'll ever have the chance to go to France...and so behold! God brought France to me!
I revelled in listening to this soft spoken woman roll the liquid french syllables off her tongue...the same syllables that I hack and spit to try to reproduce every day as I study. She spoke with knowledge and intensity. Since it was a subject about which I know quite a bit, I was able to understand quite a lot of her presentation.
What a delight!
To answer your other question, we did not purchase anything. Our samples were free. However, when the bakery opens it will not only have bread but also sandwiches, salad, soups and drinks; espresso, french syrop drinks etc. It is a lovely place, much like a coffee shop in a book store: warm intense colors on the walls, comfortable seating arranged in conversation groups, etc. They will have wireless internet available.
I asked a few questions, using french where possible. It was fun! I realized that besides my friend and the owners, I knew more french than anybody else there. That was a nice feeling and quite opposite the one I'd anticipated having.

They've had a lot of setbacks, not a few of which have been caused by the fact that they are immigrants. But right now they are just waiting on more equipment and correct hookups for same. So, maybe six weeks or less? I hope so!

Hey Angel;
Did you check out the Chanson du jour? It might cheer you.
So...what's the issue bothering you...if there is one? (sometimes I can't put my finger on what's causing the emotional slump, so if you can't, that's ok).
For me today it's several things: 1) This emptying nest thing is hard right now 2) I'm still single with no prospects and not doing too good at my new determination to learn to like it 3) my computer is sick and needs to see the computer doctor. But he is very busy and so I will likely be without my computer for several days (not the end of the world: I have another computer which is older and slower, and I have the stupidphone...it's just inconvenient and frustrating. It's probably a hardware problem which may mean the replacement of a hard drive. Expensive!) 4) school starts again soon, with all that means with a very crunched schedule, being away from my kids, the stress of homework, the constant self cross examination of whether or not I'm doing the right thing...
the list is long. Most likely this is more connected to hormones than anything else.
I'd be glad to lend a listening ear to anyone who liked to share their own problems. It always helps me.
