A little while ago I heard a huge "SPLASH!" in the kitchen. I called out (from another room) "Oh, what'd you do--dump water all over the floor?" Rachel replied, "Noooo." I looked into the kitchen, and she was standing there, at the table, with an empty cup. There was a big puddle of water on the floor under the table. "Yes, you did. Look--there's water all over the floor. Don't tell me you didn't do it!" "I didn't!" She repeated, earnestly. "Look, no water over there", (she pointed across the kitchen) "No water over there, or over there, either. It's all right here, just in one spot!" I guess she had a point. She didn't spill it all over the floor. Just under the table.

We had such a lovely day today. Erick gets Wednesdays off, but for most of the summer he's been busy with one thing or another on Wednesdays. He did odd jobs for people, and lately he's been working on getting his truck (the one that used to be his Grandpa's) fixed up, but today he took off the entire day and we just had fun as a family. First we went to Turkey Run state park and went hiking. It was so beautiful! We chose the most rugged trail (really smart when you have a passel of little ones! ) and it was pretty challenging. Most of the kids did great on it. It went in between these huge chasms of limestone with a tiny creek trickling down the middle, and you had to cross over multiple times on logs, and climb up slippery rocks and walk along high, narrow ledges. It was absolutely gorgeous. Some of the little ones got their feet wet a few times when they couldn't quite jump over the water, and we had to carry Timothy through a lot of it. We finally got a fork in the trail and picked an easier route to continue on, only moderately rugged. It was longer than the other one (two miles instead of 1.7 miles) but that was worth the trade. The kids were disappointed though--they wanted to continue on the rugged trail. They thought the moderately rugged trail was boring. They still had fun, though. Timothy kept saying, "A-MAZE-ing!" every few minutes. After that, we had to run to a conveniece store to buy bread for the sandwiches I had packed. I had remembered peanut butter and jelly for those in our family that like it, and bologna and mayonaise for those who prefer that, and a bag of apples, and some granola bars, and even butterknives for everything, but I had forgotten to buy bread. We brought it back to the park and ate. Then we went to Chuck E. Cheese's and ate pizza and played on the games, and then we went home. Everyone is now watching "Stewart Little" and it about twenty minutes we need to leave for church. It's been a fun day. The weather was just so perfect while were at the park. It's raining now, so I guess we came home in time.

Yesterday my littlest sister turned nine. I'm pretty sure it was Erick's sister's birthday yesterday, too, and one of his brother's birthdays today, but I could have them mixed up. It gets difficult to keep birthdays straight, and this month is pretty full of birthdays. In the morning, we went over to their house to dissect a rooster for school. We wanted to look at the lungs, especially, but we didn't get to blow them up like my mom wanted to. Chicken lungs are built a bit differently than rabbit lungs (which is what we used when I was in school). I bribed Erick to kill the rooster for me by baking him a spice cake. He loves my spice cake. My sister had a princess party, and all four of my girls were invited, plus four other girls. They all dressed up pretty and they put on make-up and did hair and nails, and wore tiaras and watched princess movies. They also had a sleepover. My brother came over and spent the night with Jay. Rachel didn't get to spend the night because she was too little. She was tired and cranky when she got back. I asked her what she watched, and she said, "It was a Barbie movie and it was stupid and evil."

I've blogged before about how our family is putting together a Christmas concert this year. My mom has been working on a website for our family--the Haley Family Singers. She put a sample of our singing on it, but it's not recorded well at all and it sounds pretty bad to me. We also took a family picture yesterday for the website. It turned out a bit grainy, but it's okay. You can see it HERE. We've got three whole concerts planned, plus one Christmas Eve service where we will be singing only a few songs. I believe we're doing over twenty songs in all. I'm doing one solo--"Every Valley Shall Be Exalted". We still have a couple of songs to learn, and only six more weeks! We need to learn "Lift Up Your Heads, O Ye Gates" and we're not quite finished with "And With His Stripes We Are Healed" and we need a lot more work on the "Amen" chorus. We may have to cut that one out--it's really difficult. The kids also found out what parts they will be playing in the dinner theatre last night. Joy and Sarah were both asked to come back for a call back audition. Joy decided to sing a song that my little sister wrote for her audition, which is, well, a typical song that you would expect a nine-year old to write. I wasn't there, so I didn't know that's she picked to audition with. Amazingly enough, she got the best part--the childhood girlfriend of boy Rufus (the main character in the play!) Abby also got a part--the little girl who looks through the photo album about her Poppy Rufus. She's my daughter in the play. It's the part she tried out for that I was really hoping she'd get. The dance practices are going well. I ordered a pair of overalls for the country dance, and sewed bell bottoms for the hippy dance. On Wednesday we're going to start learning the 40's dance and Erick is going to dance with me. I can't wait! I thought I'd share this picture. It has nothing to do with any of the stuff I just blogged about, but I wanted to post it anyway. I caught Timothy "reading" a story to his stuffed Clifford, and it was so cute I had to take a picture.

Erick has just about finished fixing his truck--the one that used to be his grandpa's. For the last several weeks he's been going down to his grandma's house and working on it in the garage, because we don't have a garage here (well, we do, but it's full of the owner's junk) and also because Grandpa's tools are still in his garage. He brought the truck home a few days ago and left the car there until we had time to go down and pick it up Monday morning. When I got in it, it had a really funny smell to it. I thought maybe it was a mildew smell at first, and thought maybe someone had left the windows down in the rain and that it had been closed up for a few days and that's why it smelled that way. So we rolled the windows down and drove it home. Last night I took it to drama practice, and it was smelling pretty strong. We tried to just get used to it, but it was getting difficult. Today I was going to take it grocery shopping, and I knew Erick had purchased some apple-cinnamon air freshners for the truck, so I asked him if I could put one in the car because it was really stinking. Erick went out to check on it and it was really smelling terrible by now, so he started hunting through the car trying to find out what was the problem. He finally opened the trunk and took out the false bottom, and down by the spare tire found a busted package of ground turkey that had been there since last Tuesday when we went grocery shopping last. It had somehow fallen down in there and gone unnoticed for eight days! The rotting meat had created pressure that caused the plastic to explode and spray meat all over the inside of the trunk. I had wondered why I had one less package of meat than I had purchased. I thought maybe I had just miscounted them. Last night I ended up using chicken in the minestrone because I ran out of ground turkey. It's interesting how no amount of air freshner will cover up the stench caused by rotting meat. I thought it was a very good example of how important it is to get to the root of the problem instead of treating only the symptoms.

In Jr. Kids' Church this morning, Sycamore Sam was teaching the kids about David taking care of his sheep, and he asked the kids what their favorite animals were. One kid said horses, one said cows, one little boy said a deer. My Rachel piped up and said, "We saw a dead John Deere on the road!" After church we went and got family pictures taken at Walmart. We were planning on getting the disk like we usually do, but they don't sell them anymore. I guess too many people were just getting the disk instead of purchasing the pictures and printing off their own. I was disappointed--I liked being able to post them online (which I guess is a copyright violation too, although I didn't know that) and e-mailing them to everyone. We ended up buying some of the extras so we could get pictures of the kids and of us, even if I won't be able to post them. They just turned out so cute, and it seemed like such a waste of effort to take all their pictures and not buy any of them. It didn't end up costing that much more than usual, especially since Erick gets a discount since he works there.

My mom was telling me yesterday that when I was little, I refused to eat anything that didn't come out of a baby food jar. She would make food for me, and then put it in a baby food jar, and then feed me from the jar. No matter what it was, even if it was custard pudding, it had to be in a jar before I would eat it. I had no idea I was so spoiled!

I just wanted to vent a bit about a double standard in our culture. Every year, there is a big debate over whether or not employees can wish their customers, "Merry Christmas" since not everyone celebrates Christmas. They don't want to offend anyone. Schools call it "Winter Holiday" and leave out any religious references. Everyone is so careful to be sensitive to all religions. Why is there not the same sensitivity towards those of us who do not celebrate Halloween? Why do the cashiers at the store think it's okay to ask my kids what they are going to dress up as for Halloween? If they can't say "Merry Christmas" because someone might be offended who does not observe the holiday, why can they say "Happy Halloween"? Or is only the non-religious that they are concerned about offending? If they would apply the same standard across the board, they would call it "Fall Holiday" and be careful about using any ghouls or witches that might be offensive. Instead, we are subjected to seeing grotesque displays at all the stores, whether we like it or not. I'm not advocating they do that, necessarily. I'm not going to run out and insist that everyone tiptoe around me, making sure they don't offend me with their Halloween decorations. There are bigger issues than that, more things in our culture that are offensive than having to endure the ugly decorations for a month each year. I just wish they would be consistent at least--either censor the holidays, or don't. Just treat them equally, please.

I recently started a Facebook page, because a friend at church said it was so much better than MySpace. Then my sister-in-law sent me an invite, and lo and behold I found a lot of my homeschooled friends there, and people on my husband's side of the family, so I thought that was pretty cool. Wednesday we went down to Indianapolis to visit my new niece, Saebella, who is absolutely adorable and took a nice nap on Auntie Lisa's chest, and one of Erick's other sisters who was visiting was there, too. She's the one who sent me the invite to her Facebook page. Anyway, she was showing Jay how to "Super-Poke" people. Jay thought it was really neat, apparently, because when I got on my account this morning Jay had been on there Superpoking all of my friends! I was rather embarrased and told him to never get on my accounts again like that! I wrote a note to all my friends explaining what had happened and made sure to give my sister-in-law some grief for teaching my kid to be a hacker.

Today is my 29th birthday. We didn't plan anything big today (maybe next year when I turn 30!) but I still got everything I asked for. I had wanted a set of matching dishes so that everyone could have a matching plate. Since our family has had eight members, I have never had enough matching plates for everyone. Erick got me not just eight, but TEN matching plates! He also bought me some more spoons and forks! Yay! I had to make my own birthday cake, but that's okay. I make a really yummy chocolate cake and so I was happy to make it. I must be getting senile in my old age, though, because I forgot to grease the pans. So I didn't even attempt to take the cake layers out of the pans and stack them, I just iced them individually while still in the pans. I found one lone birthday candle in the drawer, a little bit dusty but still in overall good shape, so I washed it off and put it in the middle of one of the layers. Joy wanted to light the candle, so I let her try. She struck the match okay, but seemed to have trouble getting the candle to light. By the time the wick caught, the flame was halfway up the match, so she blew it out rather quickly, and in the process blew out my candle. So then Jay had a try, and it took him a bit but he managed to light the candle and keep it lit. My family sang "Happy Birthday" to me, and I went to blow out the candle but I was laughing and I didn't have enough breath to even blow out the one candle! It's a good thing I forgot to make a wish, 'cause I wouldn't have got it! Erick blew my candle out for me. Now I am the same age as my husband, and three years older than my sister. For a couple of months, anyway.

We're finally getting down to the point where Erick is ready to start looking for a position. We've spent the last couple of weeks getting his resume ready to send to the district. Once they have that on file, they will help match us with a church, and also send us a list of churches that are open that we can directly apply to. We could find a church very quickly, or it could take awhile. More than anything I just want to be where God wants us to be. Sometimes it doesn't seem like it's real, like we're actually to this point. This process has taken so long. It's hard to even know how to feel. I guess once we know where we go from here it will be easier to figure that out. Today he's getting some pictures printed out off our digital camera to send in with the resume. Everything else is done--the cover letter, the references, everything. We called one of his old professors yesterday to see if he would be a reference for us. He's actually now the senior pastor of the church we used to attend while we lived in Missouri. All the staff has switched over from when we used to be members. It's kind of funny--sometimes I tend to think that everything just should stay the same, that we should be able to go back and visit and find things just the way we left them. Things don't stay the same, though, they are always changing.

Erick's résumé is on file with the district now. He actually didn't get it sent in until yesterday, because we were waiting on them to send us a form that we had to send with it. They got it today and contacted us and sent us the list of open churches. In the Indiana district of the Assemblies of God, they don't post their openings online like a lot of the other districts to. You have to go through the district. They will pray over lists of the pastors who are seeking churches and the churches that are seeking pastors and make recommendations. It's not like in some denominations where you are appointed, however. You still candidate and they vote on you. If it's not a good fit either way, it's not like a recommendation from the district is binding in any way. We also have the church list, and we're free to contact the churches directly to send in his résumé. There are some open down in southern Indiana, and a few up north, and a couple out east. There is one that's not terribly far from us, maybe a couple of hours away. We've been to the area a few times because there's a big tractor show they have out there. Erick's grandparents and brother like to take their tractors out there and show them when they can. It would be interesting to move out that way. We're definitely going to be praying over this process, that God would place us where He wants us, and that the timing would be according to His plan and purpose.

The first night of the play is over. It went really well overall. There were a few minor things, as always. Joy didn't get her mic in time, Abby's fell out of the clip and I was still fixing it for her when the lights came on, one girl threw a shoe during a dance, etc. Overall, though, it was a very nice performace. My kids did very well and I was very proud of them. The dances all went really well, and the audience enjoyed them very much. We got a lot of postive responses. There are still a few tickets left, too, if anyone still wants to go. We are close to being sold out, but not quite. We'll have close to 900 people by the time it's all over. Here are some pictures from the dress rehearsals. The first two are from a scene where Rufas Miller (the main character) is being born. It's a hospital scene, and there are five pregnant ladies in hospital beds singing and dancing with husbands, nurses, and the doctor. The first picture is some of the pregant ladies, the second picture is the fathers doing a little jig across the front of the stage. It was a very funny scene. Right after the pregnant ladies scene, there is a country dance that I'm in. It has a lot of lifting and fun stunts. My favorite is at the end--I do a forward flip, land right behind my partner, hook my feet over his shoulders, and he grabs my ankles and flips me over my head and I land in front of him. It's so much fun! I"m wearing overalls and a plaid shirt in this one. We're the second couple from the left. This is the kids' scene. Jay, Joy, and Sarah are in this scene. Joy is in the yellow dress sitting on the fence--she's got a main role. Jay is at the far left, in a plaid orange-y shirt. Sarah is on the right side in the middle wearing a long purple dress and a white apron. Everyone loved this scene, and the kids all did such a good job. They especially like the part where the kids all get together and do their chorus line step. Erick and I danced in the Hollywood scene, which is when Rufas has a job pushing a sandwhich cart while he's trying to become a star. Here's a picture of the two of us. Here's a scene with the main character (Rufas) and his wife, Ginger. They are having a picnic lunch and Rufas is singing a song about how he is frustrated with trying to become someone and still being a nobody. In the background, bystanders take off their coats and do circus acts. Here is the final pose of a 50's dance we did, in poodle skirts. This is the dance I learned this week, since I was taking the place of the girl who hurt her back. I'm in the middle in the front, with the light blue skirt. This is our hippie scene, with our war protest. This was a dress rehearsal, hence all the smiling faces. We did our best to communicate anger during the actual show. I'm the hippie in the back on the right hand side, with the red and blue shirt and the long blonde hair. The girl in the front is Rufas' daughter, Jennifer, who calls herself "Sunflower". This is the final livingroom scene. There are actually three of them. I'm the mother in this scene (Rufas' granddaughter) and Abby is my daughter. This whole play is a look at the Christmases past in Rufas' life, as the great-granddaughter of Rufas is looking through his photo album. Rufas, in the livingroom scenes, is old and in a wheelchair, and has had a stroke. In this scene we have Rufas on the far left, Jennifer on the couch with me, and Jennifer's husband, Ricky, is behind her. Next to me on the right is my husband, Erick, who plays my character's husband, Jeff. Abby (her name is Megan in the play) is next to Rufas reading him her version of the Christmas story again.

Last night was the second night of the play. Some things were better, some things not as good. The mic situation went a lot better. Everyone got their microphones on time, and things went pretty well. We did, however, have some problems with the dances, the costumes, and the props. In the country dance, there's this one part where I do a little jump and my partner catches me and spins me around, and my leg is sticking out, and we were all just a little too close together and I hit another girl with my leg. In another dance, another girl lost her shoe (same dance as last night, different girl). The most embarrasing, but funniest mishap, was during the hippie dance. I wear this long blonde wig, and I have it tied on pretty tightly with a headband, but towards the end of the dance where we throw our heads down and then back up dramatically, my hair ended up on the floor in front of me. I picked it up and finished up the dance holding my wig in my hand, and then made a quick exit. I didn't bother rejoining the scene--I figured there was no way I was going to be able to get back into the mood of an angry war protest when I was laughing about losing my hair. Everyone still enjoyed it, though. There was a lot of laughter over the funny lines, and I think the play gets funnier each night, too. People just keep adding their own things to it. We are having a lot of freezing rain, though, which is putting a damper on the crowds. We had sold out last night, but there were several empty spaces. There are still tickets available tonight, but they already took out some of the tables because they don't think they are going to have a very big crowd. The Sunday morning service was very sparsely attended. Our choir looked more like an ensemble. We're also hoping Joy will be feeling better before tonight. There's been a stomach bug going around the church, and a lot of the kids have been getting it. It's not a terrrible bug, it's over in less than a day, but all of our kids except Jay have had it. Usually one per day, and being better by the end of the day. Last night Sarah was sick in the middle of the night. She came to our bedroom door to ask for prayer, because she felt like throwing up. I told her if she needed to throw up, she should go to the bathroom and throw up and wait to pray until afterwards. She didn't make it. I was up at 2:15 last night mopping the bathroom floor. I was quite irritated at her for coming for prayer first instead of going to the bathroom first. I guess they'll be good Pentecostals, anyway, always turning to God first for everything.

You may remember how I posted last winter about the septic problems we've been having with this house. Well, they're back. For the last few weeks we've been getting a lot of rain and snow, and we've been noticing things not draining off like they should. We've cut out doing laundry altogther. We've been taking a load at a time over to my parents' house and washing it there, and then hauling it home wet and drying it here. We'd fallen behind, and yesterday took about eight loads to a laundrymat to get it washed. Today I get to fold it all. We're still having problems, though. I'm thinking if it doesn't get better we're going to have to start taking showers at my mom and dad's house, too. We mailed in Erick's resume to one of the churches we're interested in yesterday. We are praying that God would move us quickly.

We got quite a bit of snow last night, somewhere around eight inches I think. They were calling for six to ten inches, plus 20-30 mph winds overnight. We had a Messiah concert scheduled for 4:00pm today, and we were planning on taking our Sunday School class with us to see it. Erick had told me yesterday that there was a good chance we would have to cancel the concert. My inclination at the time was to stick my fingers in my ears and say, "Na, na, na, na, na, I can't hear you!" I hate cancelling things, and my optimistic personality likes to believe that it won't be as bad as all that, that everything will be plowed out by the time we need to leave. He came home from work early yesterday evening, and I had him bring home some M&Ms just in case we got snowed in, so we could make a cookie church if we happened to be home all day. My mom called and invited us to come over to their house for a home church service, since they had cancelled services at their church. We weren't sure if ours was still planning on being open, but we decided to keep it in mind. It would have taken quite a bit to shovel out this morning, and the highway was still pretty bad, so we all put on our snowsuits (I had to convice Sarah to nix the dress and sandals) and stomped our way through the snow to mom's and dad's house. They gave us donuts and hot chocolate and other goodies and we had a really nice home church service. They did cancel the Messiah concert. We may get it rescheduled the day after Christmas, if the Salvation Army can fit us in. We do have one scheduled for Wednesday, still. One of the ladies in our Sunday School that was going to be going tonight said she'd come Wednesday instead. We did make a cookie church this afternoon. There's melted plastic in my sugar syrup cement, though, because I used a plastic spoon to stir the syrup as it was melting. Next time I'll stick with a wooden spoon. It looks really nice, and the kids are busy finishing off the leftover M&Ms. It's been a nice, relaxing day. It would be even nicer if the kitchen would magically clean itself up now.

I've been busy over the last few days working on remodeling the bathroom again. It's been awhile since we did it last, and it was just looking like it needed to be done again. The trim had gotten knocked off of the sink cabinet, and the paint was crackling and chipping off the walls. I had primed it before I had painted it last time, but I guess the many layers of old crackling paint just came through the new stuff anyway. This time I textured the walls first, so that hopefully won't be an issue anymore. One coat of primer, a coat of texturing, another coat of primer, and two coats of smokey blue paint. We put a new countertop in, a black and white marbleized laminate, and we're going to cover the sink cabinet with a white tile sheet of paneling. The trim will be done in white. It's looking really nice. We really want to leave this house looking nice when we move, whenever that might be. We still haven't heard back from the church he applied to, or from the District, but it is the Christmas season after all so I guess that's to be expected. Hopefully soon after that we'll hear something. We'll probably send in his resume to some more churches in the next couple of weeks as well. Yesterday we had our family gift exchange for my side of the family. Rachel had my name and she gave me some really huge star earrings. They are really something! I had actually taken her shopping when she picked them out. I pointed out some display racks in the price range I was willing to spend (I knew she wanted to get me jewelry) and told her she could pick anything off of any of those racks, and I looked the other direction. She picked one and hid it behind her back while we went to check out, and I told the cashier to wrap it up so I couldn't see it, since it was her present for me. The cashier said, "Oh wow, you are going to LOVE these!" Lol! I'm considering wearing them to the Christmas Eve service tonight. I haven't decided, though. They are a bit showy.

We had a nice Christmas. This was the year to spend it with my husband's side of the family. We trade off between families every other year. We were up at about five-thirty yesterday morning, and woke the kids up at about six. The kids all enjoyed their presents. I think the highlight was Abby's dollhouse. It took awhile to put together, though. Silly me--when the box said something about over 200 pieces, I thought that meant furniture and accessories, not pieces of the building itself. I got a big huge crockpot, a stockpot, a toolbox, and a pair of earrings from Erick. I've always wanted my own toolbox. Erick has so many that it's hard to find what I'm looking for. We went to my in-laws church for our first family get-together, with his maternal grandparents. The family has grown so much lately that we can't all fit in Grandma's house anymore, so this is the first year we've had to use a different location. Erick's brother Ben is engaged now, to Kelsi (the girl I blogged about earlier who is the sister of my my brother's wife) and he also finally moved out and is living on his own. Erick's cousins were there, with their new wives and a new baby. It was a lot of fun, with a lot of good food. Then we went to his paternal grandma's house for another family get together. There wasn't even enough room for everyone to sit on the floor in the livingroom to open presents at the same time. Grandma doesn't expect to live much longer, though, so I doubt we'll be moving any get togethers to another location. She talks a lot about how she's ready to go to heaven. It doesn't seem like Christmas anymore to her without Grandpa. I'm going to miss her when that time comes. She's my grandma as much as my husband's and I love her very much. Today I've almost got the house back into shape. It never ceases to amaze me how the house can get so messy when we weren't even there most of the day. I had to shampoo the livingroom carpet, too. We gave the kids canned grape juice in their stockings, and we had no less than three spills, two of them on the carpet. They technically aren't allowed to eat in the livingroom, but it was Christmas and we relaxed the rules a bit.

Friday we went on a field trip to the Fair Oaks Dairy Farms. We technically are on Christmas break still, but it just worked well for the rest of our co-op to go there on that day. We're studying States and Regions, and we had finished up with the dairy states and had wanted to see a dairy farm. This was the coolest dairy farm I'd ever seen! They have a nature center there that's more like a museum, bus tours, a place where you can watch the cows give birth, and a cheese factory and restaurant. The kids really enjoyed it. This farm has 3500 dairy | | |
