Today Erick drove the wheels off our car. Well, that's an exaggeration, because he really only drove off one of the wheels.
We had noticed it making a funny noise back in December. It sounded like it was dragging something, or like it does when you drive through water. It wouldn't happen often, usually when going around a curve, but it's been getting steadily worse. Last night it was grinding something terrible. I was driving with four of the kids and Erick was driving the truck behind me. We had driven to church separately so he could pick up some lumber in the back of the truck for the chicken coop we are builidng.
This morning he took off for work in the car. It was grinding really bad, and by the time he had reached the next small town on the highway it was starting to weave back and forth. He turned around and headed for home. Just as he turned into the drive the wheel completely ground off and rolled away. I'm glad it didn't happen when he was out on the highway!
It was such a good little car. It's sad to see it go, because this was the car we've owned the longest out of any of our vehicles. We've had it for over four years. We bought it right before Rachel was born. In fact, the first time I drove it was on the way to my midwife appointment, and I went into labor with her that afternoon. It's been "my car". We paid $1200 for it and I think we got our money out of it.

I've been trying for a long time to come up with a good way to supplement our family's income and still be able to stay at home and homeschool the kids. My husband makes enough to support us, but we'd like to be able to put money back for a downpayment on the house and to replace our old, worn-out vehicles. I've tried a couple of things, and most of them didn't work out for one reason or another. I tried babysitting a few years ago, and one girl would bite my baby daughter every time she came over. I thought about doing that again, but we're right on the highway and do not have a fenced in yard. I don't think that's a good place to offer childcare.
I can make a lot of things, and I do it for family and friends a lot. When we first got married I made a crib sized quilt and sold it for $40. It took me about three months to do, though, and I thought it was a pretty poor return for the time I had spent. Still, it's not like I've made any money doing anything else. I can cook well, but it takes licenses and permits and inpsections and all that to make money cooking from your home. So I think I'm going to try the quilting again. I do enjoy it, and I can do it in my spare time. I recently made a wall quilt for our pastor's new adoptive family, and it turned out well. What my plans are this time is to put it up on Ebay when I'm done with it. I'm not sure it will bring much--the quilts I found on there didn't seem to be selling for much, but all I'll have invested in it is time. I have the materials around the house. Even if it doesn't bring much I'll still be helping out more than I am now, so I figure it can't hurt to try. I haven't decided what to set as a minimum price. Maybe $20? $30? I guess I'll decide when I get that far.

I removed my poll, because I suspect that the way Blog Towne is set up, regular users are shut out completely, even from voting in polls. The only voters I had were moderators, so of course they would have access. Anyway, I think I'm going to keep it--hopefully if there's anyone who follows this blog but doesn't subscribe to it they won't have any problems finding it.
I'm pretty excited today about a couple of things. First, my brother and his fiance moved their wedding up to July! I heard about it from her sister, and didn't believe her at first. I was sure she was pulling my leg. Dad had been saying they'd probably move it up to September (they had set the date for next February) and Chris had been determined to wait. I guess they wanted to go live at a mission in Nicarauga for awhile, and the missionaries told them they'd rather they be married for a full year first, since the first year of marriage is usually the toughest. So they decided to move it up. They'll be moving into my Dad's old store building. He's been trying to sell it for several years and it won't sell. Chris is going to turn it into a recording studio and art store.
The other thing I'm excited about is that a dear friend of mine who lives up north somewhere but might report me for 3rd party info if I mentioned her name  wants me to make some quilts for her! She's ordering three twin-sized quilts, and is going to pay me $50 each for them! I'm so excited. It's a pretty simple design, and I'm doing one in pink, one in blue, and one in purple. She wants them just machine quilted, too, but I may hand quilt them anyway. I'll decide when I see how long it takes me to piece them. I'm going to go Thursday and pick out the material I'll need for them.

Last Thursday we had a Passover Seder with my Dad and Mom's church and with our homeschool KONOS group. In KONOS we were studying the Love and Generosity unit and Passover was part of that, so we co-sponsored the event. We invited about fifty guests and rented a place for the evening. I was in charge of the entertainment. I thought I'd share a few pictures from the evening.
In the first picture, the older girls (including me) are doing a dance to a Marty Goetz song called V'Ahavta. I choreographed the dance, and last week my sisters went to a Marty Geotz concert and got to dance it there. I thought that was pretty neat!
In this picture, Timothy is dipping his bitter herb (parsley) into salt water. He loved that part. He dipped it more than twice. I think he dipped it at least a dozen times. He'd lick the salt off and dip it again.
This is Jay asking Grandpa the Four Questions. He left the questions at home, but he remembered them so it all turned out okay.
Here is the Passover skit the Konos kids performed. In this picture, Pharoah is getting plauged by lice. You can see there are still some frogs around from the first plague as well. I know they look like green balloons, but they are actually frogs.
The children of Israel have crossed the red sea and Miraim has led the the women out to dance Shi-Ru (The Horse and the Rider He Has Thrown Into the Sea).

I am officially a pastor's wife! Erick received his certificate in the mail yesterday from the District and he is now a licensed minister in the Assemblies of God. He is now licensed to preach, and he can marry people and perform funerals and everything else. He just doesn't have a church. So, he's going to contact the District and try and find churches over the summer that are too small to support a pastor and go around and preach at them so he can get more preaching experience, and then hopefully by the end of the year we can start looking for a position. 
The other interesting thing going on right now is that I'm in a play. The homeschool drama club is putting on a couple of plays next week. One is "The Importance of Being Ernest" and the other is "Tevya's Daughters." I wasn't involved in it, at least until a couple of days ago when we found that the boy playing Tevya was sick with Spinal Meningitis. Fortunately for him it's the viral kind, so it's not life-threatening, but his doctor will only allow him to act in one performance. They didn't want to cancel the play, so my mom asked me to fill in. I'm allowed to carry a script, as the play is a week from Saturday, but I'm going to try and memorize as much as I can. So I've got a lot of work to do. My sister is doing make-up and she's all excited at the prospect of making me look like a middle-aged Jewish man.

The play is over. I managed to memorize all the lines, so I didn't have to carry a script. I'm an all-or-nothing person, so I really didn't want to have carry a script if I didn't have to. I haven't been online hardly at all this last week and a half!
The play went really well. The first play was "The Importance of Being Earnest" and it was hilarious! They all did so well. I won't be putting up any pictures from that play, though.
I must say, I'm glad it's over. It's been a pretty tiring weekend.

There was another event that happened last week that I haven't written about yet. We got to see my uncle, my dad's only brother, last week. I haven't seen him since my grandma's funeral, which was about eight years ago. I remember it because I was pregnant with Sarah when she died. That was the last time my dad's family was together. They were up for another funeral and came to visit us. They've changed so much in the last eight years. My uncle, since retiring from the Air Force, has grown a beard and looks like my dad! I've never thought they looked much alike, but it was uncanny how much they look alike now. The sad news is that he has cancer. It's kind of hard to really believe it. He's always been in good shape. He's worked out, taken care of his body, been careful to eat right, and everything. He has cancer in his kidney and possibly his lungs and liver. If it's not in his lungs, he should be okay, but if it is it's a lot more serious. They can remove one kidney and even part of his liver and he can go on to live a long and healthy life after that, but lung cancer is not so easily treated. We would appreciate prayers for him.

Two posts in one day! Mark it on the calendar!
I wanted to share a couple of funny things that happened at church yesterday. Erick and I were teaching Jr. Kids Church, and this little girls said, "Teacher, she (another little girl) said a bad word! She said, "Shush up your mouth! Because I was talking too loud. Can I tell her not to say that anymore?"
Since it was a beautiful day, we went outside and sat in the grass to read the lesson. Some of the girls picked some bouquets of dandelions to give their mommies. They asked if they could take them home, and picturing wilted dandelions in the classroom I said, "Don't you have dandelions at home, so you could pick her fresh dandelions?" One girls said, "No, my daddy's trying to kill them." Another girl said, "My daddy vacuumed them all out of our yard yesterday." I thought that was so cute.
The funniest thing happened during the Dave Ramsey class. We are training up some new coordinators, and they were leading the class last night. He opened the class by asking, "What would you do if you lost your cash envelope system?" We all discussed it for about fifteen minutes. We swapped stories of losing cash, stories of finding cash, discussed whether it is better to lose cash versus a credit or debit card, etc. Towards the end of the discussion, an elderly gentlemen in the class addressed me and said, "Have you ever lost your envelope system in the parking lot?" I assured him that I had never done that, although I had misplaced my purse a few times. He held up a Dave Ramsey envelope system and said, "Is this yours?" My jaw about hit the floor. "Where did you find that?" I asked. "In the parking lot." he said. I took it and opened it up, and sure enough, it was mine. I hadn't even noticed it was missing! Oh my goodness, the class sure thought that was funny!

I am taking a leave of absence from moderating. I really enjoy it, but lately I've just had so many other things to do I haven't had the time to spend online that I used to. Some days I don't log in at all, other days I don't get on until noon (like today) and only spend a few minutes on at a time. I just can't properly moderate unless I can commit more time, and I just don't have the time at this point in my life.
The kids are in 4-H this year, and they are getting ready for "Share the Fun" in a couple of weeks, which is a 4-H talent show. Their club is doing a group act and practicing twice a week, and Joy is going to be doing V'Ahavta with three of my sisters. Sarah is only a mini 4-Her so she can only be in the bigger group acts. It's kind of a complicated dance, though. I choreographed it for the older girls at the Passover dinner, so she's going to have to work hard to learn it. I think she can do it, though.
This week we're going through all the clothes, and I'm also working on finishing up the quilts I'm making for LisaP. I've got the pink one finished, the blue one put together and basted and in the process of being quilted (it's in my sewing machine now) and the purple top done and ready to put together. I think I'll be able to mail them all out on Saturday. I need to remember to get her address again, though. Someone removed it from my address book for some reason.

I went to a garage sale today! First one of the year! I'm hoping to get a few things and put them up on Ebay. I know people (at least used to) make pretty good money doing that, and it can't hurt to try and make a little bit. After all, I've got my digital camera now. I spent about $10 today and got quite a few things, some glassware, some brass giraffes, a CSI Miami game, a Cat in the Hat hat, and a dozen fancy belts. Surely I can get at least my money back from them. It's worth a shot, anyway.
I got back in time for co-op. We're doing the American Revolution again. I just did the American Revolution last year (or was it the year before?) but now that I'm in a KONOS co-op, I kind of have to follow along with what the group is doing. It's okay, though, because we're doing some different activities than I did last time. Like, we did dip candles today. That was pretty neat. We made punch tin lanterns to put them into. We also re-enacted the Boston Massacre, the Boston Tea Party, the Midnight Ride of Paul Revere, and the battle of Lexington. Joy was Major Pitcairn. She went up to minutemen standing on the green (in the front yard, that is) and yelled, "Disperse, ye rubbles!"  They had fun shooting each other, although some of them didn't have any guns and resorted to using their hobby horses as weapons. As the Bible says, "Some may trust in horses..."

I finished the quilts for LisaP! I mailed them out this morning. We managed the get them all in one box, too! I'm happy with the way they turned out.

Yesterday we went grocery shopping and it was Rachel's turn to go. We had to stop by AutoZone to get a manual for the car we just bought. The guy helping us was looking through the manuals trying to find the right one, and Rachel said, "How about the blue one? Our car is blue." Then she told the man, "Our other car is broken, and my daddy can't find the part to it. But Jesus knows where the part is!"

I had a frustrating day today. We just got our septic tank pumped again last week (a week ago today, exactly) and I went to flush and it didn't go down.  It hasn't even rained this week! I can't believe it's full again already. It's just water, but it won't flow out of the tank like it should. The ground is still too wet.
I'd heard talk that our town was supposed to get a sewer system sometime, so I called the Health Department to ask when that was supposed to happen. The guy told me that there aren't any plans to put a sewer system in our town at all, not anytime ever.  He suggested that we not do any laundry and give it a break. He asked if there was room to build a finger system--there's not. He then told me that if I wanted him to, he'd get in touch with the people who own the house and come out and look at it and take care of it. I asked him what he could do, and basically that means he could make the owners fix it (if possible) or even condemn the house if it couldn't be fixed. He's not going to pursue it though unless we want him to, and he said he'd move heaven and earth to not have to condemn it. I don't want to force them to try and fix it. We're not paying any rent here, they have much bigger troubles and I don't want to make life more miserable than it already is. I know they'd like to sell it, but they aren't going to be able to do that with the septic issues. Erick and I had considered buying it and probably could get it cheap, but I don't think I'd want it now, even if they gave it to us. Besides, Erick's going to be looking for a church sometimes this year, when he feels like he's ready (which he doesn't yet). We probably won't stay in this area. As much as I'd like to, I know it probably won't happen.
So we've got to figure out how to do laundry and not fill up the septic tank. I did some this afternoon and put the hose to the washer into a five-gallon cooler and let it empty out in that and dumped it about eight times for one load of laundry. It wasn't fun. I watered the front lawn with it (which actually did need some water, believe it or not!) I just hope soapy water is okay for grass. The good news is the toilet did flush later on, so maybe the septic tank needs to be just treated gently and not overworked.

Timothy is getting so big. He's saying so many words now, and it's fun watching him grow. He's getting really independent, too. He's finally doing well at potty training (mostly anyway) and can get on and off himself, and change his own clothes. He loves to change his clothes. He'll go through all the clothes in his drawer in one day. Today he's been taking them off and running around in the nude, though.
He said a four-word sentence Sunday. We were eating Dairy Queen ice cream cones for Abby's birthday and Jay pretended to take a bite from Timothy's cone. Timothy said, "Jay, MY ice cream!" That's the longest sentence he's said yet!
He's such a copycat. He does whatever he sees the others do. Sunday we went to the park and they have a pavillion with a stage. One of my brothers and one of my sisters came too, and they all put on a show for Erick and me. They would introduce each other, and come out and sing a song, and applaud. After they were done Timothy came out and introduced himself by pointing to himself and yelling, "Tim!" Then he hopped around the stage, singing in short little shrieks, "Ah, ah ah ah ah!" Then he bowed and applauded for himself. It was so cute.
Today he motioned for me to put my head down towards him and said, "secret". I put my ear close to his face so he could whisper his secret, and he yelled in my ear. Ouch. Of course, I knew one of the others had taught him that, and I was right--Sarah had done it and he followed her lead and did it to me. Yeah, I know they need to set better examples, and it hurt my ear, but I had to stifle a laugh still because it's just the funniest thing watching him do exactly what everyone else does.

I have decided to take the plunge and go into the quilting business. Yeah, I know, I've already been doing some of that through made-to-order quilts and Ebay, but I'm going to get a booth in a craft gallery. This is a bit scarier for me, because I have to invest money in renting the booth, but I think I can do it. I'm teaming up with several of my sisters and sisters-in-law and also my mother-in-law, in hopes that between all of us we can come up with enough items to stock a booth. I'm planning on going and visiting the gallery this next Thursday. I've talked with the lady on the phone already, and she said that she doesn't have any quilters at the moment and she has two booths available. Hopefully they'll still be available! I'm wanting to shoot for the beginning of June to get ours up and running. I'm teaming up with my sister Emily to get some quilts done--I'm doing the piecing and she's doing the quilting. I whipped up a fairly simple lap quilt last weekend and got that to her to quilt, and while she's working on that one I'm working on a harder crib sized quilt with about four times as many pieces. It's an Amish Friendship Star, and each star is made from a different material. I had a lot of old vintage fabric scraps from my grandmother and some from my husband's great-grandmother, and I'm using a lot of them. Some of them I had barely enough even to get one star out of! They are really neat fabrics, the kinds you can't get anymore. Some were from the flour and sugar sacks during the Depression. One in particular I know is from a sack sack, because it's still got the stitching up the side of the cloth. The printing is even on the stitching. It's an orange and blue paisly print. I'm enjoying the different patterns in the quilt.
My mother-in-law is going to be making some old fashioned dolls and I have one sister-in-law that made some teddy bears she's going to try and sell. She's also working on a crocheted afghan to put in it. She's a SAHM too, and wants to be able to help her husband out, too. There are so many scams out there that prey on SAHM's who desire to make money from home, and surely there has got to be a legitmate way to do it without getting caught in something that would take our money without any return. I think this could be it. This gallery has been in place for 16 years. Surely if they have been around that long they have the customer base and the experience to make this a worthwhile effort.

We had such a nice co-op day today for school. I think this was the best one we've done yet. I'm sure my daughters will agree with me, anyway.
Today we had a mock wedding. We are in the Loyalty unit in Konos and we're studying loyalty to God, family, spouse, friends, church, country, and employer. Most of the week we've been focusing on loyalty to spouse, and part of that was studying weddings and wedding planning.
So we decided to have a mock wedding. So that no one felt left out, we decided that all the girls would get to be brides, and all the boys grooms. We didn't want to encourage pairing up, and besides we had twice as many brides as we had grooms, so we just had all the boys stand up front and all the brides walked down the aisle, and my dad led the ceremony. When he got to the part where they exchange vows, he put the names "Joe Shmoe" and "Betty Bumpkin" in the vows and they all recited them. Then he pronounced them "Friend and Friend" and they all blew kisses at each other. It was so cute. Then they walked down the aisle, two girls on the arms of each boy, and we went downstairs and had a reception with cake and punch and mints. They threw their bouquets, and we all threw birdseed at them when we left the church. It was such a fun day.

The other day we were at Walmart with some of my kids and a few of my siblings. We had borrowed "The Barbie Diaries" from the library the day before, and Abby was excited about it and decided to tell my sister about it. "Vivi!" she said. "Guess what? We have Barbie Diarrhea!"

If you are reading this, I want to ask you a favor. Please take a few moments right now to say a prayer for Joy. She has a bad bladder infection and she's in a lot of pain. We took her to the doctor today and she's on an antibiotic, but so far she's not feeling any better. I don't know how long it takes for the antibiotic to start working. The doctor was concerned it might move up into her kidneys. Please pray--she's nine years old and it is so hard to see her in so much pain.

I want to thank those of you who prayed for Joy. Much to my relief, she's feeling much better today. She's wanting to get up and play, and she ate breakfast today. She only has a little pain in her sides. I was really worried that her kidneys were infected because of her high fever and side and back pain. If they were, we'd have to take her to the hospital and they'd have to give her antibiotics through an IV. Praise God she's responding to the oral antibiotics.
She started improving yesterday evening. Her fever broke and she started feeling better quickly. It was neat knowing I had people that were praying for her, and I believe like the Bible says that if two or more agree on anything in prayer that it will be done by our Father. Thank you for agreeing with me concerning Joy.

My kids must have been trying to make me laugh yesterday. They said so many funny things. I don't think they meant to be funny, actually, but they were.
Jay and Joy and Sarah had all written letters to the President awhile back for school, and they all got letters back yesterday (of course they all said the same thing) and they also got a nice picture of the President and First Lady. They were so excited. The envelope said, "First Class Mail" on the front and Joy said, "You know what that means? That means they got to ride in the First Class section on the airplaine!"
Later, Abby came up to me and said, "Do you think I have an eye infection?" I looked at her eyes and answered, "No, why do you ask?" Abby rubbed her eye and said, "Because every time I pee my eye hurts."  I can only figure that it must have had something to do with Joy's bladder infection.
Then, if that weren't fun enough for one day, Rachel came up to me and said, "Mom, when's it going to be time to eat, and when's it going to be my shopping day, and why do we all have to be alive?"

Today I'm going to set up my craft booth. I've been working like crazy the last few weeks trying to make enough items to put in there. Emily has been helping quilt some of the blankets I've made, and my sister-in-law has made a few things to put in there as well. I should have close to twenty items to start out with. I'll have three quilts, and Emily is nearly done with a fourth, and a couple of potholder sets, four table runners, two tote bags, an apron, a couple of teddy bears, maybe a doll or two, an afghan, and a pillow.
Here are a few of the things I've made recently. The first is a tote bag. It's an apple basket pattern, and it's made of denim. It's got a red gingham lining. This is probably my favorite of everything I've made so far:
This is one that Emily hand-pieced a long time ago, and never finished. She gave me the blocks. I had to fix one that had a stain on it, and re-do a piece that had pieced wrong, and then I put them together with borders, put it together, and handquilted it. Most of the time I piece and she quilts, but we switched places this time around. I had fun quilting it, actually. I might save out a few projects to hand-quilt myself.
This is just a simple quilt that I did all on machine. I thought it turned out pretty cute, though.
This is a just-for-fun patchwork apron I made. I don't know if it will appeal to anyone, but I had fun making it.

I got my booth set up. I'm happy with the way it looks, although I'm worried that I may have overpriced some of my items. I was hoping that the lady that owns the place would be there and I could ask her if my prices were okay, but she wasn't. So I'm just praying that they are fair and that people will want to buy my things.
