Luke, my youngest, has been having seizures since January and has been diagnosed with Lennox-Gastalt Syndrome, a progressive epilepsy which can affect learning and the brain. Sugar makes the seizures worse so we just don't keep treats around the house anymore.

Tamara-I'm sorry that you received such a tough diagnosis for your little one. How are you doing? How's Luke?

Tamara, no wonder he's so excited! I hope your household adjusts extremely well with the no-sugar rule. It's tough to make such a drastic change in diet, but health wins every time on that one. Glad things went well, Garsy. Sounds like summer is kicking/will soon be kicking in for everyone. Any vacations/outings planned? We will attend our family reunion in June, as usual, and the church mission trip in July. Other than a couple of trips to the lake and the planned camps for the kids, we'll just be hanging around. With gas prices, we can't afford to do much more than that!

Highly doubtful that we'll take any major trips this year. We were going to try to travel to Minnesota - but with Brian being out of work and looking for a new job it may not happen. We may take a few day trips to different state parks and maybe a few camping trips now that we have enough tent space for everyone. My parents are hosting the family reunion in Minnesota this year so I would love to go so we'll have to see if we could manage it some how. Ty has a incrediable packed July with theatre camp and then working two full weeks at the zoo. Plus my parents will be here the end of this month! The girls both have girl scout camp in July too. Blessings, Garsy

You didn't look mean, Kath. I just didn't want to give the impression that I'm a meanie for no reason. He's adapted very well to no sugar. No white bread or crackers was harder. It's not so bad. Later this month he'll have to go to a high fat, low carb diet (the Ketogenic diet) so I'll have to take away all bread, crackers, cereal, etc. That will probably mean no bread (white or wheat)/crackers/cereal/pizza around here for awhile. That will be hard, but hopefully it will get rid of the seizures before they get much harder. At least he's a picky eater so I can make things like pasta, rice, potatoes for the other boys. I'm kind of sulking around right now. It's a process. At first we were skeptical (its a scary diagnosis and I just didn't see it happening). Then we were upset. Now I think we're just going day by day. Some days are really great. Others are hard. The no sugar thing helps though. For someone of his diagnosis he has relatively light/fewer seizures. We're very blessed with that, decent health insurance, and a good neurologist.

I didn't think you were mean either :) I just thought maybe he was hyper or something. Sounds like the 5 stages of Grief. You know, Kylie may be able to help you with the bread thing, if I remember right J has to have a restricted diet too. I thought he had to give up flour and it helped him. and someone makes pizza with a special flour that makes it lower carb, but I just can't remember who. Ezri maybe, or *shakes head* I just can't remember but she might remember who it was if not her. There's a lot of help on this board. :) quote:

When we needed growth hormone for Daniel, the hospital was amazed at how quickly the process went, the insurance had sent back the paper work before the woman they hired specially to be a go between the hospital and insurance could send it to them. They just approved it from what the hospital said was needed.

Tamara, that sounds like it could be very hard to deal with, and have to explain it all to a little kid on top of that... Ugh. Is there any medication for what he has or is it all lifestyle changes? And will he have to keep those up forever? I called both schools today...Noah's to talk to the principal about the awards thing, and Nick's to find out what in the world was ever decided about summer school or holding him back. I called both and left messages before 10 am. Neither one called me back. I am already irritable today and that is not helping.

Hey there, I just wanted to say that I'm praying for your family. I somewhat understand the whole process that you are going through. With my twins being born early and then just never catching up we knew something was wrong. We went the whole speciallist route in search of a diagnosis. The hope that we clung to was that we could find a diagnosis and it would be fixable or at least treatable. For us a diagnosis would be more of a puzzle than one big condition. My girls never have fit into a category or diagnosis. In time, they are now 10, I have grown to accept that the diagnosis is not the key, assuring my girls reach their full potential is. I've also learned to surrender the doubts and fears that come with having a child with special needs, medical or developemental, to God. Jeremiah 19:11 has become my key verse for my twins. So I will pray that you find peace and support in this time. I also want you to know if you just want somebody to talk to I am available. PM me here if you like. God will take care of your little one, that little lamb is being carried by the good shepherd, and so are you. In His grace, Kim Q

Debilyn, is Thursday your last day? The middle school had a lot of movies the last week; the HS not so much because they had finals. We've revised our vacation plans due to gas prices. Tamara, keep us updated on Luke. Eliminating bread would be difficult. Hi Kim! Kath, how's your weather? It seems like severe storms keep causing damage all over Kansas. Not here specifically though, thankfully. A chance of more tomorrow. Julia, how is your summer going? I hope things work out for Brian soon, Garsy. Hang in there Roberta! You'll make it! I hope you hear from the schools soon, Donna. I'm waiting to hear back from camp; I need to find out if my middle daughter can stay over for the weekend. I'd like to know how many trips I'll be making. I will need to pick up my son, but it it's just him maybe he can get a ride.... I emailed them Monday and Tuesday night. I emailed again tonight, to two different email addies. So hopefully I'll hear something. I could call, but I have VBS all morning which would be the best time to call. And it seems like email should work. Dee

Hello, Dee! Hope you are having a nice summer and that your children are having a great time at camp. My summer is going well. It's different now that I work part time (I was a full time sahm for 18 years), but I'm still finding some time to relax and break from routine. It is nice not to be worried about juggling school and work schedules for a few months. Donna-Hope you hear something soon.

Hope you hear something soon, Donna and Dee. Tamara, sounds like you have good resources to put a nutrition plan in place for your son. My friend's daughter (age 10) was found to be boarder-line diabetic, so they put her on a nutrition plan. She's been on the plan for a year now, and the entire family has benefitted from the changes in diet. Denim, sounds like a busy time for you. Hope J-10 is feeling better. Today is the last day of school - half-day. I'm looking forward to sleeping later in the morning. B has the SAT on Saturday, a couple weeks of camps, then he gets some time at home. He'll probably want to sleep all day the first day home. It's hot already and not even mid-morning. It's also dry around here - we've had several brush fires in our county and the next one over this week. I'm glad no houses, businesses or people have been hurt in either of them. I'm praying for rain soon. I hope everyone has a really pleasant day today.

Good morning! Dee, we're under a flood warning right now. The field outside my house looks like a lake. We've had so much rain the ground can't absorb it all. There were tornadoes in the area last night.

I hope they get back to you quickly Donna. Julia, I'm glad you are enjoying a change in routine. I know I do here. Kath, we have a tornado watch too. Hopefully you don't get rain out of the storms brewing this evening. Radar shows a system moving towards us. K gets to stay at camp over the weekend, so one trip down instead of two this weekend. That's good. E is excited because she gets to counsel again next week. Hopefully she doesn't get too tired. I just missed chatting with her on gmail this afternoon. That'll teach me to leave the computer. Dee

And where my kids are (3 of them) is under a severe thunderstorm warning right now. I don't usually worry too much about weather, and even now I'm not overly concerned, but this weather lately has been weird. They are not under any flood watches/warnings which is very good, because they are in a very low lying area. Dee
