Y'all can "rip" me for this if you want to....but I'm going to say it. Please remember this is coming from the depths of my loving heart that is trying to encourage y'all...so here goes:

Get out there and get moving. It doesn't so matter much what the schedule is. Try really hard NOT to negotiate with yourself about this. The longer you negotiate, the more time passes....and chances are...the more weight you end up needing to lose.

I'm speaking from personal experience (and probably what most doctors would say as well). Last summer, I hit a wall where I wasn't losing any more weight...so I told myself I needed to start exercising. Well, I wanted to bike...but I had NO bike. So...I put things off....and really....that's probably part of what contributed to me gaining a good part of my weight loss back.

This summer I put that behind me and began working out using the Couch to 5K. It really is simple & anyone can do it. I've now completed 5 weeks & feel pretty good about it. Granted, I haven't lost much weight, but I feel like I have more endurance to do things, etc. now. And that was a huge part of my goal in becoming healthier...I wanted to be able to do more things with my son.

Okay, I'm stepping off my soapbox now. Feel free to rip if need be, but really I am telling you all of this in all honesty because y'all have said you want to be healthier...weigh less....whatever your reason is for wanting to lose weight. Y'all are great ladies & I wish you all the best to success with your weight loss.

I'm not running today. We just had a massive storm front roll in and I have a lovely pressure change migraine and ear ache

I attempted my c25k run this morning...made it through about 3/4 of the workout before I had to throw in the towel. Running at 11am when its 100* and a bit humid on an empty stomach with no water isn't the most brilliant thing I've ever done. One more completed day and I'll be onto week 2, since I didn't count today as completed.

That's why I run inside....or part of it. Not to mention the embarrassment if someone actually SAW me running (or attempting to run). I know not everyone has that option though. Kudos to you, Stacy, for going out and running...even if it wasn't the entire workout. That's great!!!

I try to get at least a little bit of protein in my body before I run (a scrambled egg or some yogurt are my choices). Not sure if that's good or bad...but it seems to work for me.

Megan, when are you going to start running outside? Have you thought about a treadmill?

I don't run outside because it's to blooming hot, but I'll have to at some point. A treadmill is not sufficient training for any sort of race.

Mostly I decided to run today because I was just too wound up and needed to burn some energy without going to the gym (DH was sleeping). Had I thought about it a bit longer, I may have changed my mind.
I found I much prefer the treadmill in the air conditioned gym, but may try to sneak in one run a week outside on weeks when we don't make it to the gym three times. I think if I went a bit earlier or later it wouldn't be quite as bad, although I'd have to get up pretty early to beat the sun.
I don't seem to run well if I've eaten in the past hour- doesn't seem to matter what it was.

I think the treadmill may be on hold for a while. Even on craigslist, the ones in our price range aren't heavy duty enough- we've concluded that we pretty much need a gym-quality machine. We tried one out yesterday and I thought it was fine, but it shook as soon as DH got on to walk.

I haven't made plans to run outside until our move (as I won't really have much of a choice...think my dad might yell at me if I was running around HIS house, LOL). Just have to make sure I run early....

As for the treadmill...we've thought about it....but like Stacy...it's an expense thing. Cheaper to use what is readily at hand...so I'll probably end up going outside regularly after we make the move. I don't think our new house will be big enough....

Oh and it's definitely too hot to run outdoors here...unless you do it first thing in the morning. We're supposed to be over 100 every day this week.

I'm jumping in blindly and plan to read the preceding posts at a later time, since thee are so many of them.

What is your ultimate goal for your body? To be fit and weigh between 125-150 lbs. Also wear smaller size clothes and get stronger and have more energy so I'm not tired all the time.

Do you have a plan to get there, or are you looking for one? Yes, I'm trying to stay on a low carb plan, but not doing very well on that, since I love carbs so much. I've lost most of my weight eating low carb though, so I need to get back to it.

I also do cardio and strength training exercises, though not on a regular basis. I'm working on improving my exercise habits.

Do you have a time line you're working in to be 'in shape' by? Yes, to weigh 185 lbs and wear size 18W-20W pants by December 31, 2008. Weigh 150 lbs and be in regular sizes by December 31, 2009. Weigh 125 lbs by December 31, 2010. If I stick to my low carb plan, there's no reason why I cannot reach these goals.

If you aren't able to start working out now (pregnant mommas!! ) when do you intend to start reaching your goal? I'm working out a little, but need to do more.

Do you have mini-goals set up along the way for yourself? Yes, they're listed in my timeline above. I also want to be able to look good in an itsy bitsy, teeny weeny, yellow polka dot bikini, even though I would never actually wear one!

Hey Melissa, Welcome!!

I'm going to try to get back on the wagon after another weekend. Yeesh, weekends are hard for me to eat properly! Especially since we were at two big bbq's this weekend and everything they bbq comes on a bun. White buns at that. I wouldn't feel so bad if they were at least whole wheat!
Oh well, at one point, we were driving on the way to a cottage, and hubby wanted me to run in a get some chips, and I came out with cheese and crackers, and he was was kinda disappointed! Anyway, they had chips once we got to the cottage, so he was happy.

Ok, going to make a good low-GI breakfast

I am still waiting for my job to transfer to the campus that has the free gym for employees. Hopefully, that will happen quite soon.

In the evenings, I have been taking short walks... followed by playing on the Wii. I know it doesn't seem like much, but it is more than I had been doing.

This past weekend we went to Atlanta and Stone Mountain. I was quite proud of myself. I walked ALOT in the natural park. Then day before yesterday we headed to downtown Atlanta. We parked our car near one attraction, then we used their rapid transit system to get to the center of down town. Then we walked to the Aquarium, The World of Coca- Cola, the Underground and then back to pick up the car. I was by far the heaviest one there... and I kept up!

Later in the evening I danced for at least an hour with family at the family reunion reception.

I don't think I could have done all of that if I hadn't started moving a few weeks ago.

What is your ultimate goal for your body? To lose weight for my diabetes, to wear smaller clothes, to be fit.

Do you have a plan to get there, or are you looking for one? Yes, I am on week two of the South Beach diet. I used it about a year and a half ago, and really did well. I am looking forward to phase II.

I will start C25K at my new job site on the treadmill by the end of this month. (I will keep walking and playing Wii in the mean time) I will also utilize the nautilus machines in the gym.

Do you have a time line you're working in to be 'in shape' by? My first mini goal:

To be down twenty pounds by December. I have family coming to visit. I also want to be able to handle the C25K work out with regularity by then.

If you aren't able to start working out now (pregnant mommas!! ) when do you intend to start reaching your goal? I'm working out a little, but need to do more.

Do you have mini-goals set up along the way for yourself?
I listed the first goal.

Secondly: I want to be able to ride a bike comfortably again. I'm hoping to be ready for that by Spring.

I want to be able to sit in a movie theatre without the arms gouging my sides.

I want to be able to decrease my blood pressure medication.

I want to FEEL better and not hurt sometimes, due to weight.

I want to live long enough to enjoy my future grand children.

I keep trying not to think about the AMOUNT I will need to lose in total. It's just too overwhelming.

I think you can get a pretty decent workout with the Wii. No, it's not like running, but it's better than sitting in front of the t.v. and not moving at all.

I hope this question isn't off topic, but ... what do you say to your sister who is very overweight when she tells you she's having all kinds of health issues and it's caused by her weight? I'm overweight too and know that being grossly overweight cause many health issues. Is it hypocritical to comment on her weight? Don't we all pretty much know that excessive weight on our bodies leads to health issues? She called the other day and I just really didn't say much about it.

She's your sister. I think you could be brutally honest with her and she'll still love you. Tell her you're saying it out of love. And since you are also overweight, you are coming at it with some firsthand knowledge. Offer her accountability and offer to work together to lose the weight.

I have a lot of co-workers who sit and complain about being overweight, or not feelign well, and then stuff their faces full of cakes and cookies and ..... One day they sit and asked someone who had just lost 50 lbs, "How did you do it?" while eating a giant piece of lemon cake. Good grief people. Put down the sugar and go for a walk at lunch to start!!!!!

OK. Off my soapbox now too.

As someone that struggles with food addiction... can I just say that honesty is DEFINITELY warranted. But not brutal honesty.

I am blessed to have a sister that reminds me that I will feel better as I continue to work out. She prays for me and with me for spiritual strength to choose to take care of this body.

And when I screw up and eat something horrifyingly bad... she encourages me to "refocus my hunger on Jesus."

It is so hard.

Deb, to answer your question: No, it is not hypocritical. You love her enough to talk straight.

I am blessed that my sister talks straight... and even will walk with me.

She will still love you if you are brutally honest. But I think gentle honesty may serve as a first attempt.

Hah! Just went to another subbed thread... and someone posted something I think is brilliant:

quote:

It also helps when i have to deliver bad or critical news - I can say things in a way that the other person is most likely to hear - or at a minimum least likely to reject.

***the following is MY issue, and mine alone***

My weight... my eating...my appearance is a sensitive issue for me. And I know that I'm overly sensitive. (one reason why I'm actively changing) But for someone similar..... defenses can come flying up and communication shuts down.

I have been guilty of that in the past.

But that is just ***ME***

Many people have dealt with this sensitivity. God is still working on me with that. But there ya have it: my honest moment.

Not off topic at all. Since you're carying extra weight, that could be an "in" rather that a hypocrisy. Next time she complains about her aches and pains or more serious health problems (or pending health problems if this persists), tell her you've been feeling/thinking the same things and you're really wanting to do something about your weight because you're convinced that's a huge part of the problem and you don't want to be miserable as you age. Try to get her to do it together; frame it in terms of you needing her to do this with you to help you. Of course, for this tact to work, you also have to be committed to making changes.

Yay! It's so great to hear how everyone is doing!

My DH and I are starting week 4 of the C25K. Last week was really hot here, and since DH was away at youth camp (where he ran faithfully, good for him ), I had to handle both of our kiddos on my own, which meant pushing the huge double stroller as I ran. I'm eager to see if it's easier now with some help.

I'm praying that these times of being out in our neighborhood exercising would give us opportunities to meet others in our community. We've been surprised at how many "regulars" are out walking at the same time. I pray that we'll have opportunities to build relationships and share Christ through this!

Doing the C25K with a stroller is definitely harder! I've done it a couple times when hubby wasn't home.

Is week 4 a lot harder than 3?

With the version we've been doing, week 4 is the same as week 3, as far as running time/walking time. In week 5, the running time increases, and it increases every week from that point on. Maybe the program is trying to build endurance with the consistency during these two weeks? We didn't get a chance to run last night (teething baby, DH working late), but I'm hoping to be able to start it today.

Went for a long walk last night with eldest son.

We started out slow and moved up in tempo. The last street in the neighborhood on the way home we slowed back down.

I was whupped! But it felt good.

Small steps.....small steps.... small steps.

Landabee, do you have a picture of something you would like to get back to that you used to be?
I find that's quite helpful for me to look at for inspiration.

Actually, yesterday when I kept wanting to eat all day, I kept picturing my latest picture of me when I looked like a big blob. It helped.

I wish I did. Unfortunately all of my "before pics" were when I was married.

When I fled, I didn't take any photo albums.

I do think I have one from right after I graduated high school. I would like to be that size again: 12... gonna go look.

ETA: nope...... I think I'll ask my pal BeckeyZ...... she has loads of blackmail pics of me in highschool. LOL!
