ORIGINAL: landabee I'd be interested in knowing which podcasts each of you are using. If you have a link, that would be great. I think I will be using one that I found for free on iTunes. But, if there is one that you are using and just love and would recommend, I'd love to know. Thanks. Count me in for another one who uses the Christian Indie mp3's. I'm really, REALLY enjoying them- I have to stop myself from singing along when I'm at the gym. Landabee- baby steps. Just keep moving in the right direction and you'll get there.

landabee, what do you mean you can't walk that fast? There's no speed requirement... Sometimes when I do the c25k on some of the runs I am barely doing more than a hoppy-walk... Don't be discouraged, we all have to start somewhere. I'm so glad you went for a walk even though you were alone!! Good for you!

I do the Couch to 5K by time. Not sure how far I actually go in a run. I did "walk" it off and figured that around my "track" (aka living room/kitchen) it's about 20 m. So...on the runs where they wanted a person to go 200 m, I would need 10 trips around. Sounds complicated, but it really isn't. Basically, moving & doing more than you were to start is the key. You can do this!!!

Landabee -- I second, third, fourth, etc all the suggestions that you concentrate on your time spent exercising, not the distance or speed you're going right now. It'll get easier and easier the more you exercise, and THEN, you can be concentrate on increasing your speed. You can do it! We did run #1 of week four yesterday. (We opted to each push a single stroller instead of one of us pushing the huge double stroller. MUCH easier!) It's getting easier with each workout. I had done thirty minutes on the stationary bike before we went out, so I felt like I got a good bit of exercise in yesterday. DH and I have both lost a couple of pounds so far this week. Woo-hoo! Our problem is maintaining, though. I'd love to lose ten more pounds and stay there. Hopefully, a regular routine of running will help make this happen.

Hmmm...maybe that's why my runs seem so easy nowadays. It's the same path over and over...granted I run for longer...but....hmmmm.....

And I doubt you can really get up to a good stride if your running inside. You should just get out and go! Some of you might like reading THIS lady's blog. She started out the year(or maybe it was last year) having to the minimum number of months of exercise so that she could have weight loss surgery. After exercising, she no longer needs it! The name of her blog "Fat Runner Confessions". HERE is her "bio" entry.

I have a tip for those who want to lose weight. I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes about a year and a few months ago, and back then I was 189 lbs. at 5ft. 3in. tall. My doctor put me on a 1800 calories a day diet and then sent me to a nutritionist/dietician. I got educated about the diabetes and about what I should, could, and shouln't be eating, and before I knew it the weight just came off, and that was without exercising. Of Course I am exercising now, it is important to my health and to keep the weight off, and to help me to shed the extra 20lbs. I have left. I wasn't exercising at first, because to be honest I was lazy and I was also fatigue and feeling sick all the time, due to the diabetes. I knew I had to change some things, so when I saw that the weight was coming off inspite of me not doing any exercising, but just eating right. It gave me the drive and incintive to do what I needed to do. The diabetic diet is not as strict as some would have you to believe, and it's really not that hard to follow or keep up with. Try following the diabetic diet for one or two weeks, and I guarantee you'll see the pounds begin to come off. It's a very healthy diet, so there should be no health concerns, and you can find the diet in many cookbooks or books dealing with weight and health.

ORIGINAL: MyCatSmokey2006 I'm doing well, with 40 minutes of gardening (200 calories burned according to sparkpeople) Just watch the estimates of calories burned. I know on fitday, it's wildly over-estimated. The only reliable way I ever found where I know I'm not basically guessing, was to get my heart rate monitor. It's all relative, I know, but for reference, it takes me about 30 minutes in an intense step class to burn 200 calories. But, IMO, I think gardening should be for bonus points - I hate it. quote:

For people with a lot to lose, the diabetic diet is phenomenal! For anyone, though, it's just a really good reality check for how we just should be eating anyway!!

Thanks for the link, Ryanne! I've been wanting to get one of these for myself while working out and for Marshall- he's becoming very active in Cub Scouts and spending lots of time tromping through the woods with his buddies. Gotta keep that munchkin hydrated too! --Kat

landabee, it's ok to skip a day...as long as your skipped days don't start adding up! And, if you're looking for a better substitute for white rice, try Basmati, I love it, it's better than plain white rice (and I hate brown rice, so it works for me)

Jasmine is a good substitute for plain white rice as well. I finally finished up week 1 of the c25k- for me that was completing 3 full workouts, even though it took me more than a week because we're still erratic about going to the gym or getting in a full workout. It was SO much easier indoors than trying to do it outside! I did use the treadmill to try and increase my running speed for some of the intervals- I varied it between 5 and 6 mph- my legs are so short that I think anything faster than that might be a sprint for me.

Is Jasmine whole grain? I've never gotton a straight answer about that, which leads me to believe that it's not. I have been figuring if it was a whole grain they would capitalize on that fact on the packaging... but I don't know.

We buy ours in 25 lb bags, so I don't pay too much attention to the packaging. Is basmati rice a whole grain then, or only brown rice? I know I've seen brown jasmine and/or basmati rice before.

You can get basmati brown rice. That's all the rice I buy. I believe it's available in white basmati, too.
