So I'm scared to death to use my debit card there now. I actually went inside the store last week to purchase gas from an AM/PM because of this. Took me longer, but I felt safer about it. (I only got gas there because it was $0.10-15 cheaper than everyone else). I've heard this story in a variety of ways at various stores that have gizmos in the self-pay machines. I really miss the days of the cashier doing the work and the machines being out of the public's way to alter. Yet another reason I use my credit card more often than my debit. Although I'm not sure how safe that is either since I sign away and who knows if anyone is watching my signature or if john smith could go in and use my card and no one would know. I've joked about wanting to sign my name, "Stolen Card" on the self-pay machine at the grocery store and see if anyone notices. Yeah .... I don't trust anyone anymore. And I've never even been a victim.

We have a shredder here at work and I save my home account stuff that I would normally throw away, shred them here once a month and then toss them in the trash. I never really thought about it, but shredding is kinda fun so I was doing it for that reason alone.[:D] I felt like Fox Mulder.

I shred all my stuff at home. I have a small one. Mostly used for credit card apps and stuff. I do all my banking online and most of my bills are ebills. My dad scans all his statements and saves them on the computer, then shreds them. I dunno why he doesn't just do e-statements. Would save a lot of time/energy/paper. But that's off-topic. I've been buying online for years. I order groceries and pizza online even. A couple years ALL the christmas presents were purchased online.

I've never owned or used a CREDIT CARD in 5+ years....have not had ANY 'issues' at all.....(and, i get those pesky little points, too)....and, never charged extra....there's isn't one thing I have done, in which I have had problems using my debit card.... got tired of CREDIT card companies always finding ways to scam me...so, I "fired" them....

I'm not second guessing you or doubting that it happened, I'm just trying to put things in perspective. Conducting business over the internet in and of itself isn't more perilous than anything else. Where things are risky are the integrity of the people handling your info and the security of the databases storing it. -Dan.

A lot of people get their identities stolen from people they know (family members, etc) or employees at businesses. I am sorry that it happened to you but reputable companies online have the credit card info encrypted so no one sees the entire number. Also retail places are supposed to have made all receipts show only the last 4 numbers on the receipt, but it is a good idea to watch who you hand your card too so they don't take a photo of the card or swipe it into a system that steals the numbers. Even if you paid all in cash there could still be a way for someone to steal your identity. All they need is your ssn

They claim the info was encrypted, and that the chances of anyone's recovering the information is ver small--but I have to wonder why the information was on a laptop in the first place. Everywhere we go, people demand information from us and we give it to them. Go to the doctor's office, and they require our SS number. Why? They do not need that information. In fact, no one but your employer really has an reason to ask for your SS number, if they are not the government. I was very relieved that the last time I got a new driver's license, they did not print my SS number on the license. That always fried me--ever bit of info a thief would need was right there[&:]

My parents have an bookbinding business, and they rely heavily on internet orders. We are doing more online shopping. We've only had one time where we ever had a problem, and that was because I got suckered into a blinking ad saying I'd won a new laptop. [:'(] From that experienced I learned that if I'm unsure about whether or not a site is legit, I can check it out on the Better Business Bureau's website.

I've thankfully have not had any problems buying online. Make sure the page, where the credit card information is taken. is a secured page. It will have a padlock (usually yellow) on the screen in the bottom right corner. Or the page's web url address will change from http:// to https:// (s for secure)
