Harvie, did you get an email from my man yet? He said he emailed you some decoration pics from the box you (so kindly!) sent...
It's been 6 months. I still cry.

Well, my husband just got his orders for March of 2010! Going to Bagdad with his MP unit.

How do you be supportive when what I really want to do is lock him in the basement and never let him out? I know there is a lot of time between now and then, but 18 months will fly by. We have been married for less then 2 months so far, and the Army has already had him for 4 weeks of that time so far. Even so, we are soooooooooo much closer and connected. I'm almost afraid to allow us to get closer. Ya know....just in case.

This time around, he is not going to be safer in a base with a roof and without haveing to leave that base other then to fly to and from home. This time, his unit is going to be doing Law and Order kind of stuff in the city. For peets sake...he won't even finish his MP training and be MOS qualified for another 6 months!

Ugh!!!!!!!! I knew what I was getting into when we got married. I knew this was gonna happen. I just had no idea how our relationship would change after we said I do and how hard this really would be.

((((Sharon))))

I am in a huggy mood tonight eh?

We have never gotten orders that far out. even when we were doing our "overseas" tour in Alaska. I have learned in 20 years active duty spousal service that the army doesn't write anything in stone. Things change and fast and usually at the last minute. Half of my Honeys office is leaving on less than 60 days notice. i have never seen so many folks work the system to get out of going than I have in this unit he has been grafted into. Seriously- office of 6-7 enlisted and 3 officers and 1 of the 3 officers got off by whining about plantar faciatis issues(my husband has dealt with plantar faciatis for over a decade and has run marathons with this foot ailment and is still going) 2 of the enlisted got off on medical issues as well- stuff that they had prior and had not complained about til their number came up... Stupid stuff. only 1 of the enlisted folks that started out going and is not had a REAL health reason- I am positive he'd rather be going to iraq than dealing with Thyroid cancer they caught doing his physical in prep for the deployment.

Thanks for the hug...!!!!!!

Ray is not in active duty. He is in the National Guard. So, maybe that makes a difference?

One thing that may change is that he has put in a conditional waiver so that he can find out what slots are available back in Active duty. So, if we go that route, then things could change. But, he still may end up going. You just never know.

we were active duty and found out a year out for his deployment...and that made it even longer because of that year previous they were gone more then nine months of it (but not ever more then 28 days in a row so they didn't have to pay sep. pay) training for the deployment. At the last minute they canceled his group from going (according to Rumsfeld)....but the higher up stalked him into sending them to Kuwait to sit and wait...then six months later got their way and got sent north...on Mother's Day...all because one top brass official was retiring soon and wanted that badge of "having been officially deployed to a war zone" on his record.

My DH got 24 days' notice for his current deployment .... Gotta love the Air National Guard, huh? (He's active duty, though) ... and we know already he has to go back in March for time #6.

I still cry occasionally as well... I don't think the deployment changed Micah much though, but he was pretty safe inside the wire. I do think he is more...soft? empathetic? He has issues from being hazed at his first PDS, not from anything deployment related.

I have seen photos of where mine will be and he is going to be behind so much concrete! The unit has been told that there will be NO passes for folks wishing to go off post so don't ask. The are planning a couple of "chaperoned" trips like they did when Honey did the pre deploy site survey but the commander has said he is not 100% keen on that either. EVERYTHING they "NEED" is on Post... and I have seen how overbearing this man can be just in their time at training the last 2-3 weeks. He kinda likes having his way.

I KNOW if nothing else they *will* protect their airframes. He has worked with aviation units off and on his entire time in service. Those are some of the hardest bases/posts to get onto even here in the USA.

While everything that the guys "need" is theoretically available on the base/post .... the reality is that it isn't. My wonderful DH says he never knows what will be at the BX when he is able (infrequently) to get over there. And, at some point, the guys tend to get pretty bored and just tired of all the sameness. What helps is things from home .... ordinary things ... Sunday papers, magazines, DVDs of silly movies and tv shows, that sort of thing. (Sports they get plenty of, reports my DH, the NON-sports fan!)

One of the things that my DH really likes is that I send him around 4 emails per day, EVERY day. I report on the mail, the weather, the kitties, my plans for the day, local events/happenings, etc. And I also send him noteworthy articles from the local paper and other online news sources. It may sound boring, but he appreciates getting these emails so he feels more connected to what's going on at home. And I take and email a lot of photos, too ... how the yard is doing, rearranged furniture, sleeping kitties, etc. He reports that some of the other guys report that they "hardly hear from their wives" .... and some of them seem envious of the fact that Ron always has a newsy email (albeit short, sometimes), waiting for him.

My wonderful DH does get to leave the base, in a plane while on missions, so at least he gets to see a lot of the desert-y, dusty terrain from the sky, with occasional glimpses of animal life (sheep, goats, foxes, birds, that sort of thing.)

I know the guys out further in "front" don't have all the stuff mine has reported having on base and that may change as they are talking about moving further south at some point too.

Oooo phone call!

I am getting up at 5:30am tomorrow and going to get my honey! We get to have hi ALL DAY! and off post!

I have a question about care packages...

my brother is currently in basic combat training

should I send him a care package, or would he have no place to put it? or would he even need anything/be able to keep it? I know Harvey said about that things that remind them of home are helpful. He has been away from home since early August, but has stayed in the US.

my brother called Sunday and my phone didn't pick up the call ( ). he said on the voicemail he left me, "I haven't heard from you for the month of October." I guess he must like hearing from me then if he noticed that.

is he in basic training Cathrine? Or AIT? If he's still in basic (as in boot camp) that's a whole different ball game.
If he's in AIT, a care package would be great. He should have some place to keep things, although there are rules about how their rooms have to look. A care package for AIT should be small things, some sweets he'd like and maybe some pictures.

Basic Training when Jerry went through it back in 1988 was a no go on care packages. Advanced individual training they could have the things sandy mentioned. SMALL things. they don't have a lot of personal storage and the more personal stuff they have the harder it is on them when they do inspections.

Jerry is actually HOME today. He is taking the trash off right now- He checked the salt in the water softener. We HAD taken care of that part of the thing. The front yard is mowed the back yard needs to be mowed the rose garden is "okay". We need to buy a lawn mower blade so the rose garden can be mowed. Over all I think there is enough done to ensure him that we will "make it" reasonably well the next year- BUT enough left that he feels needed you know.

Well I need to get going.

My brother is at basic training... just recently started. He won't be moving to AIT until November 28. So I guess I will just stick with writing a letter for now.

yup...that's the safest bet. they have changed a lot about BIT since all our hubby's were in, but not that. In AIT they will have a small wall locker to keep a few personal items in. When Paul was in BIT though they confiscate and store everything they are not in true need of (and those things they really need were provided by the Army). They wouldn't even let him keep his brother's ring that he always has on him.

Grrrrrrrrrrrr ..... Today in the mail I got new credit cards from our bank (with new account numbers), along with a notice that as of tomorrow (10-15-08) they have "deactivated and cancelled" our old credit card due to "merchant security breaches."

OK, great... so I have a replacement cards, which has been activated. But my wonderful DH, who is in a WAR ZONE, now has a completely useless, deactivated/cancelled credit card ... and I have absolutely NO way to safely and securely get his replacement card to him. So he will be without the use of a personal credit card until he comes home next month.

I talked to 6 different people at the CC phone number to see if they could keep the old account number "alive" for just another 30 days and allow ONLY charges from Iraq, and they said "nope."

Grrrrrrr.
