This is a news story I heard about this morning. It kinda makes me sad that she lost her job over this.

Covaan_Meshuga -> RE: Woman shaving her head? (6/6/2008 12:18:30 PM)

Incredible. About 1.5 - 2 years ago, my daughter organized a bunch of women in her office building to grow their hair out, then cut it short, to give it to those who make wigs for cancer victims. Several women joined in her effort. Not long after her haircut (she did not shave her head), she learned she had cancer. Now she does have a shaved head.

She is a beautiful woman, with or without hair, but she has run into a few true heartless jerks like that woman's boss. Fortunately, none of these "heartless jerks" have been in her workplace.

Would they have fired her if she had had to have her head shaved (surgery, etc.)?

Ridiculous.

That was one of the comments posted on Yahoo news ... what if she genuinely had to lose her hair for whatever reason ... would she be unemployed then? (Mind you, the boss would probably then try to force her onto a medical / stress leave ... just so he wouldn't get called out by the enforcers of the Labour Laws for dismissing her ...)

I'm not saying that she should have lost her job or that her boss behaved appropriately, but the article I read said that she was told before she shaved her head that it would not meet with the restaurant's standards of "professional attire." I found another article that said she was given the option of wearing a wig, but she refused and another that said she wasn't fired, but rather told to take the summer off without pay (and maybe they would let her come back after her hair grew out some?). It's hard to know the whole story...

I am just glad she got a better job. She obviously needed to move on and I guess firing her was her kick. I got fired for getting married... though they refused to say that was the reason. I was at work on friday, got married friday night, came back on monday and got fired. [:D] I needed that kick in the butt to get away from that company and I am glad I don't work there anymore.

Poor woman! No wonder Christians get persecuted for their principles. I've seen it this morning and really was saddened by the news.

Interesting. This definitely adds to the story.

Do you have a link?

Halfway through article it's mentioned

quote:

"But that's not the biggest issue. We told her how we felt before (she shaved her head)," he told the newspaper. "She could have done a multitude of different things to support her cause that wouldn't have affected her work, but she chose to do it in a way that we told her was inappropriate for our business."

The Sun Times reported that both owners said they told Fearnall before the event that they would not be happy if she shaved her head.

and

She said she told her boss she would not change her mind, nor would she wear a wig; her boss showed reservations about approving of a staff member appearing at work with a bald head.

Here is a link to a CTV story that includes the owner's defense.

It is definitely and interesting story.

I haven't gone to any of the links. I'm just wondering if they would have a problem with a bald man working there?

peculiar_lady2 -> RE: Woman shaving her head? (6/6/2008 9:55:09 PM)

one of the interviews brought that up Roberta

Roberta_ -> RE: Woman shaving her head? (6/6/2008 9:56:10 PM)

OK- my bad. I should've looked.

peculiar_lady2 -> RE: Woman shaving her head? (6/6/2008 10:05:53 PM)

lol....one person they interviewed was saying how it *could* be a gender discrimination suit if she chose to pursue that in court (which so far she has said she doesn't want to do)

ta_mosquito -> RE: Woman shaving her head? (6/9/2008 3:57:27 PM)

The radio is reporting that due to public outcry, the restaurant has apologized to her and is offering her job back. There's no news on whether or not she accepted it.

They also mentioned it's an upscale restaurant, FWIW.
