To me writing down a prayer and then reading it seems like you are trying more to impress folks within ear-shot with your 'letter-perfect' prayer instead of just telling God what is on your mind and letting it come directly from your heart.

Only God knows the thought and intents of the heart, that's really not up to us to judge. Maybe they are shy and afraid of looking bad in front of the group? I with DenimDiva, it's been spontaneous for me. I've found that what you do in private prepares you for the public...maybe these people don't pray alot in private??

Again only God knows. Are you a youth Sunday School teacher? I know that young people are very self-conscious.

Similarly, I once heard a pastor say that he doesn't prepare sermons ahead of time, he just preaches from his heart, and allows the Spirit to guide and direct him as he does. My response was, "Can't the Spirit guide and direct your sermon for Sunday beginning on Monday? Doesn't the Spirit move in your studies?"

This reminds me of a movie I saw once.
The dad was a preacher trying to get his notes in order for his sermon.
He kept wadding them up and throwing them in the trash and starting over.
The young son came in and asked his father, "Don't you get your sermons
from God?" The father said, Yes. Then the boy answered, "Boy, God sure
makes a lot of mistakes!"

I do make a list when we ask for prayer. I don't have the memory to remember
every thing asked for. So I peep every now and then and pray for the item
on the list. Of course, it's spontaneous, so there's no written prayer.

But I can see if the prayer is part of the format, someone might have it written
down. I don't see a problem with it.

I just open in prayer and close in prayer. i don't ask anyone to give a prayer.
But my background is eveyone begins wishing inside, "Oh God, don't let him
call on me." lol. So in that sense, I don't call on anyone. If it were part of the
format, that would be another story.

I pray what I feel. He's my Father, and I talk to Him as such.
I often get a lot of laughs at my prayers, because I talk to Him as I would
anyone else. I don't use the 'thees' and 'thous' in prayer.
