The Truth. I love a charismatic service but I left such a church because they were more into plays and skits and dancing etc. and sometimes there wasn't any sermon at all. They were good people doing good things but...if you don't preach the word, to me, your just a social club so I left. I now go to a nice quiet baptist church. The teaching is excellent. God's word is presented in a way where you learn. Its not boring. Its exciting. To fully commit to the adventure of following Christ Jesus...that is our church "motto". We hear almost no preaching where i attend, but sometimes, a leader will veer off the teaching and preach. When they do, it is always relevant and excellent. I really disliked where I used to attend, where the preaching was all too often about emotionalism and preaching that bordered on harrassment. Often, I would think, "I am submitting to being part of a captive audience, listening to this silly little man rant. Why?" I thought it interesting later, when I learned that he got his cues from listening to old cassette tapes of 1940s preachers, the written sermons in books, and the notes he had taken from other preachers he liked. It was almost funny. Almost, not quite.

I went with relevant to today's issues. I want it to be Bible based, but I like it when the sermon can be up to date as well.

well if ya leave out the yellin now and then how ya gonna wake the congregation up? Well would only say the the first option of expository can and should also include tying in how this applies to current time. After all the preaching is supposed to teach the Bible and yes even the whole OT can be applied to today's life for its all about relationships

Bible based for sure. The Bible is relevant for today, that's why it is called the Living Word. I will only attend a church that is fair and balanced. preaching of Grace and Mercy with a healthy dose of eternal consequences. This is the Truth anything else tickles the ears or condemns everyone.

(HERMENEU'TICS, n. The art of finding the meaning of an author's words and phrases, and of explaining it to others. Noah Webster's 1828 Dictionary of American English) Traditionally, preaching has been what is done when addressing unbelievers, some times referred to as evangelism, teaching is the "follow up" that strengthens and builds up the believers knowledge and faith in God. It is probably just me, but I have always found good expository teaching riveting enough to keep me awake. Preachers who fall into the "cadence and the cant" tend to keep me awake too...but more so I can attempt to dodge the lightning bolts I expect to see raining down on them at any moment. [;)] Tim

I'll tell you who is most irritating of all speakers: the traveling evangelist. First, they seem to somehow get the idea that it is up to them to save the audience (because when they come, it is an audience rather than a congregation). Second, they seem to think they are a gift and are gifted, whien in actuality the greatest attribute I have seen among them is pride which they are either in constant battle with or they just submit to it and recognize that they are great. The last time I saw a traveling evangelist was the last time one appeared in my husband's church, and it was embarrassing. I was embarrassed for the little man, but when I got the guts enough to look around, I saw that the rest of the audience seemed to feel the same way -- embarrassed, bored, and ready to go dowwnstairs for the food. They had planned a potluck after the service, and the little man stood in front of the food, with obvious pride for his delivery, and waited for people to come up and congratulate him. Noticeably few did, and the ones who did seemed to do it out of obligation. It was awful.

I like the way our current pastor "preaches".....just a normal "conversational" tone...sure, he might raise his voice momentarily to accentuate a point....but, otherwise, he's just "talking" to the congregation..... And, it's always "expository/bible based".....even so, the pastor winds it into how the passages are relevant to today...... Many years ago, before I got married, and was living here in Texas (1992 sure doesn't seem like MANY years ago!).....I went with a friend to her "home church" one sunday.....it was a very small, poor church in southern West Virginia. That preacher screamed at the top of his lungs for most of the sermon!!! A total "turnoff"....and, he was "ranting and raving" about how "evil" it was to have any kind of wealth...and that the "rich" people were going to "you know where".....and, as someone earlier mentioned, it was clearly meant to "tickle the ears"..... and, yet, people were going ON and ON about how good "that preacher" was.....and, I had to just shake my head....and, think "if you only knew how misled you are here......."......but, I was a "guest" on just one Sunday morning...so, discernment "won", and I was "polite" and didn't say anything....

I get the most from expository preaching. I don't like the Dr. Phil style of presenting a message. I will not tolerate preachers using scripture to back up their own agenda, such as building a new facility.

I love to watch the well spoken Pastors that teach, and then watch them from one second to another get all excited in the Holy Spirit. ...then I have those days where I feel the need for some good ole radical preaching.[:D]

I don't care one way or the other about style, as long as the preacher has a message from God to share. I've heard hollering, jumping preachers with nothing worth listening to. Same with calm, lecturing types. And I've heard powerful message from both types.

I voted for Expository/Bible Based. I would have liked to have seen "anything that keeps God's words in context and doesn't add or take away from what God says," so I had to settle for the closest option. [;)] I'd like for it to be more than "bible based" and be accurate. I don't much care for how loud or quiet a preacher is- there's a time for being soft-spoken and a time for being in your face. The Bible by itself is relavant to today's issues... we don't need a preacher to make it so. We're not stupid. When the Bible says "Don't commit adultery" we know how that applies to our lives. I would like to see preachers get away from little sermon formulas, like having only three points and forcing them to all have the same letter. Let's just go with what God says and not act like the congregation is dumb, thank you very much. I also agree about proof texting... let's just read through the Bible together with a bit of expounding and don't try to make a passage say what you want it to say.

It must be Bible based. However, I went with needs to be relevant to today's issues. I grew up in a church listening to sermons every week that I generally tuned out and wondered why I had to sit through them because they didn't apply to my life. I want to know what the Bible says, but I also need to know how to apply it to my life. And I do not want to be yelled at. I would walk out of the church if the pastor started yelling at the congregation.

If God has given them a message and they are delivering it, I'm listening. God does not cater to my whims. It is for me to go His way. [:)]

Anything else leaves me hungry. What I love is when they teach me some history of Israeli customs, etc. within the message. For example - the Samaritans. It is fascinating to me that Jesus was sent to them by the Father and yet they were looked upon with contempt and avoided by the religious leaders of the day. That gives me insight into God's heart[:)]

I chose "Able to make the Bible relevant to today’s issues" since it is my 1st choice and preference. In general if it's this one, being Bible-based is a MUST for me.

Yeah, I didn't wanna vote for just one, I found I like all three as long as there's a new message or at least one I need to hear behind it, which I believe definitely happens. We have a variety of pastors that speak besides our main pastor at my church, and they've all got different ways of speaking what God's put on their hearts and they're all biblically backed. I like all of them =/

I sampled a lot of churches before choosing mine, and I live in the bible belt there's a lot of "old time" worship, I couldn't get into it or the hacking style of preaching. I love the church I chose though the pastor is humorous and knowlegable and serious all at the same time. We sing a lot of praise and worship songs with drums, bass, acoustic guitar instead of the old hyms and piano I grew up with. In regards to his sermons they are scripture based, related to our lives and is usually calling for us to have a deep, passionate relationship with our savior

We could all use a little fire and brimestone occasionally, but I find now that i am drawn to "conversational" style preaching. I have outgrown the need to be "entertained" and have no draw to emotionally based preaching. Good for a visit or two, but I probably would not find myself a member there.

I, also prefer the simple message. Jesus often used relevent terms to describe the kingdom of God to an agrarian people. I think His example should be used in preaching.
