I recently struggled with this exact question of selfishness in praying for a spouse. I was feeling guilty for praying for myself when I came across Psalm 37:4. Delight yourself in the LORD and he will give you the desires of your heart. I was really uplifted by this, and released from my guilt. God then brought to my mind Genesis 2:18, and this is something I claim now - The LORD God said, "It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him. (or in my case her LOL).

I don't know what the future holds for me, but I do know that He is ultimately in control and I don't feel guilty for the desires of my heart according to His word! As ebony 101 said:

I think the really tough thing is waiting on God's timing. His timing is perfect, we need to be patient.

I agree!

A lot of good input here,

God tells us to take everything to Him in prayer so in and of itself it is not selfish as long as your primary purpose is to stay in His will and glorify Him with your life.

No, it's not selfish. God does tell us to ask. That's what I'm doing!

Along the same lines...do you think you should ask for a specific person? Like there is someone out there who you think would be what you need. Do you ask specifically that it be them?

We should ask God for everything, that way we will only get what He wants us to have, and not what He does not. I prayed to God for a digital TV recorder and somebody bought it for me and I didn't evven ask them too. If God deasn't answer our prayers then its because its not His will.

If you have strong feelings about a person, it is always good to pray and ask God to clearly reveal to you if you should pursue a deeper relationship with her/him. You have to be careful not to let your personal feelings interfere with God's leadings or "hints".

So very true - and even if you are convinced that you are hearing from God about this person, realize that they also have free will and may not choose to follow God in the way you believe.

I forgot that they might not be listening to God. It's a wonder that people ever get together. That's why God id God, I suppose.

That song by Il Divo & Celine Dion tugs at my heart strings & always reminds me of the 1st post.

The 2nd verse is quite nice:
Someday I'll find you/Someday you'll find me too/And when I hold you close/I know that it's true.

There's a nice weepy film, displaying the main parts of "The Lion King" to the words of the song on You tube. Tears come to my eyes everytime I watch it. Every singles dream come true .

I don't know how to post links otherwise I'd put in the link for you all to go and have a look/see.

I pray all the time for my future husband. It's the desires of my heart to fall in love. God will fulfill my hearts desire in His time. So, I live everyday with excitement knowing God is in total control.

That is an awesome attitude and so the right thing to do! I've done the same. ( the praying, I mean.)

I really don't see how desiring to be with someone would be considered selfish.

I do though think that we can get into the idea of having a mate so much that it becomes like an idol and a prize. Whether it's wanting love or giving it, there is an extreme side to the spectrum. I also feel that prayer for a mate should not always be the most central source of our prayers. That can cause to wait and wait and wait and make just a few days feel like months. It's possible to be trying so hard that you actually miss an opportunity for a great relationship.

You hit the nail on the head when referring to turning marriage/spouse into an idol. I also agree that desiring a spouse isn't selfish...it's how we're wired. God created woman for man, after all. Of course, being patient for the Lord's timing is much easier said than done at times, especially the older you get. But I also know the disaster of divorce from not being patient or listening to advice. Therefore I personally am a little more cautious these days and actually tend to be overly so. But even as the desire grows, I have learned to leave this in the Lord's hands and use my time as a single to serve Him.

Sometimes t's not what you pray for, but HOW you are praying for it, I think. If you aren't sure if you are praying with selfless motives, do a heart check and ask the Lord to let you know if you're off track. Believe me, He'll tell you! It is completely normal to desire a spouse...just make sure you are leaving that decision in His hands. On the flip side, the decision to be single needs to be left up to Him as well. We have no right to tell Him that we WILL be married or that we WILL be single for the rest of our lives. Let both rest in Him and see what happens.

DEFINITELY NOT! In Genesis God gave Adam Eve. Why? Because he didn't want to see Adam lonely.
And remember this scripture: If you delight in the Lord, he will give you the desires of your heart.

If it's according to God's will for you to be married, then God will bring a wife to you.
It's not selfish. It's a desire you have.
