NealIRC -> How do people get married if there are no state and federal governments? (6/8/2008 3:34:19 PM)

Or the people from thousands of years ago.

If a man and a woman were stranded on a deserted island, how do they get married?

And such.

Today, every land in the world is part of a federal government (even all of Antarctica) so I'm curious about it from thousands of years ago.

Why are you worrying about this when in your own post you have demonstrated that it does not apply today?

People have *always* had their customs and rules about what constitutes a marriage in their societies, and there have always been those who insist on scoffing at the rules.

In 1008, as in 2008, these people are fornicators and adulterers.

In a case such as this, they would just have to vow to God, as there would be no local laws governing this.

Making up hypotheticals is not really useful is it?

Taking a vow would be my guess... I would think each civilization has had their own customs depending on the way their group/village operated.

Err, what does not apply today?

Okay, so is this an *alternative* to marriage?

True. Especially if the hypothetical is super unlikely.

Neal,

I've tried to ask the question "How does the bible define marriage" to find out what sort of legal requirements there were for marriage from a biblical point of view.

In our "modern" society where the government regulates most things, and most people look to the government to tell them how to do things because they are incapable of comprehending how someone can get through life without a 'big brother' to tell them how to do things.

I think most don't like to think about how marriage is defined because it contradicts or rattles their personal theology.

"Making up hypotheticals" and asking hard questions is how most of modern philosophy, theology and science have advanced. I'd say it's pretty useful indeed.

"What constitutes a legal marriage biblically" is a very good question, and one I haven't seen adequately answered.

Neal,

Actually, I wasn't asking the Biblical definition at all.

I was asking the forum definition.

I was scolded by a moderator and had my posts deleted when I inferred the difference between "legal marriage" and "religious marriage." The discussion was about pre-marital sex, and I argued any marriage that is recognized by God's eyes is sufficient and not 1 that has to be from the state and federal government.

This post might be deleted too.

It appears that you have already received this information. I will provide it for you one more time, with the warning that this is going to be the final time you are given said information.

Here it is:

quote:

In our forums marriage will be defined as follows:

A union between a man and a woman as recognized by state and federal laws. (We do not consider same-gender unions to be marriage in our community.)

Having sex with someone of the opposite gender does not make you married. God calls it sin.

Sustained and forceful arguements to the contrary will be considered a violation of our Terms of Service and may result in further action up to and including a ban from the site.

If I were you, I would abandon this topic, as this board is clearly not the venue for you to promote your ideas.

To aid you in this, I am closing this thread.
