And I appreciate it. An example of the dilemmas...kid A (5) can't be with kid B, C, or D because he won't behave if he's with them. So we're trying to split them roughly by ages (5-7) (8-11). So I'm supposed to put kid A with the 8-11 crowd, so he won't have to be with B, C, or D? That's dumb and not the best for kid A or the crew! I'm sure there will be some unhappy people Monday morning, but we did the best we could. And we'll make changes for Tuesday if there really are issues. We're not inflexible, but there's only so much finangling we can do, KWIM? My mom's church just finished the same VBS and most of the kids were NOT from their church and didn't know each other before VBS. She said that it was much easier that way, for making crews. They just rotated through the crews as new kids came, to make sure they all had about the same number wise. Of course, their church is also huge and my mom ended up with 9 five and six year olds.

Oh, here I felt bad about the request for Sarah because it wasn't a NEED, but I did think that it was simple to do... but I was hoping. Personally, I liked having older kids with the younger kids. It helped the older kids loosen up and participate easier with stuff because they were helping the little ones (good excuse to be a little goofy) and they didn't have to worry about being cool. I thought it made the stations run smoother and was a lot more fun with all the groups. The older ones also helped the younger ones with the crafts, making it go just a bit smoother. Also the crews with more older kids finished their blankets too fast and had nothing to do, and the leaders of the younger crews ended up trying to do the blankets mostly on their own and correcting some of what the kids did.

I did it the way M asked me to. The crews are more by age than the groups are though...definitely.

Yeah, I am not sure why they changed it from the first year. I wasn't able to be there for the planning meetings this year so I didn't get to address it. It isn't like VBS is going to fall apart for not doing it more mixed. We just thought it made things smoother. Are you saying that the kids are going to be more mixed this year because the crews are being paired differently?

The 5-8 and 8-11 thing is not firm...just what we are shooting for. It's also about the kids having a good time and being with friends their age and understanding level. A crew leader trying to work with an 11 year old and a 5 year old might have a hard time reaching either of them well, KWIM? My moms church just finished the same VBS and their crews only have two ages in them...4-5, 5-6, 6-7, etc. They do fine with it.

But it isn't something that is horrible, so I really argue about something that isn't THAT important. I just have a different preference.

I know YOU do it every day, but not everyone does. And most of our crew leaders are older teens, as you know. Aren't a lot of the crew leaders home schooled? I could be wrong about that. Denim, will be in prayer that it works out.

ORIGINAL: Psalms274 We have "Backyard Bible Clubs" in lieu of VBS ... where people volunteer their yard to host a mini VBS in their neighborhood. (They provide the yard and the snack.) This year we had 35 families volunteer. The church trains volunteers for the games and crafts (we had a lo of high school and middle school volunteers this year) ... and volunteer bible teachers ... they provide the parachute, games, crafts and curriculum ... this year we had between 21 and 39 kids at each house!!!! We start off with parachute games, move to the bible study for 25 minutes ... a short review (with lollipops for answers), a small craft, snack then end with water games. The neat thing is you reach more kids as well as un-churched children ... and it is a great way to impact your neighborhood by establishing lasting relationships with the children and parents in your neighborhood that can last for years! I totally love this idea. This year was the first time i was involved in VBS and really loved it. We did the olympian theme at the church and had about 20-25 unchurched kids show up along with children whose parents were involved. I really loved it esp as i had the best group the littlies from4-5 yo. Also in relation to the competitiveness we assigned all the kids to 3 colours at the beginning of the week. So they had to work together to win the medal at the end. Really i dont think kids cared too much about that in the long term - they were happy with each of them getting a medal and page full of stickers. Joyce

We survived another day but I was feeling queazy: and I did drink a lot of water. We bought pizza for all the kids today. THey had 40-50 pizzas. The kids all filled up, so did the workers, and some of the parents got snacks. I brought one home for dinner and the girl I am bringing brought one home for her mom and sisters.
