well I am not one to coform to follow what others feel or think is appropriate. God will tell me if I dress wrong or right.

I am one that goes against the grain. I.e. my Pastor in Colorado Springs wore sandals to preach in. I agree with his thoughts. Jesus wore sandals and he is no better man than Jesus.

I have a group really in the works after last night and no we won't be wearing suits. Honestly, I can't stand suits and prefer tshirt and jeans.

I do think that Jesus didn't have enuf earthly money to buy a suit. Seriously, the Bible calls him poor (and a lot of other things too.) He was that by choice, of course.

so the singers and pastors have to have a suit on to do anything in CHurch or singing or they not giving their all for Jesus? sorry, I can't agree with that thought at all.

I'm not saying that. I think you misunderstood me. No, Jesus didn't preach in a suit. John the Baptist preached the coming messiah in animal skins and long hair! ( ) Jesus did say those with the fine linen were in King's houses. I personally like to see men in suits and I also am personally glad I don't have to wear a tie! Ok, double standard, I know. lol I just think we should always put our best forward for Jesus in every situation. But more on topic, our group wears dressy coordinated stuff for a worship service and more dressed-down stuff for a Gospel Concert. That's just us. I have no problem going to a concert and seeing men in polos and nice slacks. But I guess to each his own. I won't pull teeth over it.

And to add to the above post, I think we should always do our best for Jesus, not just in dress, but in everything. If our heart is right, everything will fall in line as far as what should we do, wear, think, say, etc.

When I first started going to church after I was not long saved, I knew, without anyone ever telling me, that I should wear a skirt to church. Only I didn't have a skirt. So I wore clean jeans (I had no decent slacks either) and a clean tee: the best I had at that time. Later on I was able to upgrade to nice skirts, but I gave my best at that moment. Even now, I wear jeans to work and around, but I only wear skirts to church.

I know we've covered this topic several times but I figured I would throw my thoughts in again just for the fun of it and because I have nothing else to do right now!

When I go to a concert, I prefer to see the artists dressed up, especially if it is an indoor concert. But, I am not going to get up and walk out if they aren't dressed up. I'm there to be uplifted by the message of the music.

For ourdoor concerts, they should be dressed comfortably. Anyone (especially Tim Lovelace, Karen Peck & New River, and others who performed) who was at the Gabbard Homecoming in Falmouth, Kentucky last August knows just how hot it was out there. When it is 95 degrees in the shade, dressing in a suit to sing is NOT the best idea.

Yeah! I think I would run screaming out of there if any of them were not dressed!

QTFan, I would expect that. If you're picture is fairly recent, you are probaby in your 50's or 60s. Older fans seem to mostly like a more formal concert.
The question that I have considered after hearing preachers especially talk about wearing suits and dressing in the old time way. There is a church in Hammond Indiana whre the men honestly look like they are out of the 1950's with haircuts and dress. The pastor once said that not only should men wear suits but white shirts on Sunday morning.
Who decides this? Who decides when to stop and say this is how we are dressing for the rest of earth's existence. Why suits, why that time period? Why didnt we go back to how men dressed in the 1800s, or 1700s or dress like the pilgrims?
For me the bottom line is, as has been stated several times, personal preference. A group or soloist should only consider, am I honoring God?
If they can answer yes, then they are probably dressed appropriately.
I know I have seen pictures of one of my favorite tenor singers dressed in Jeans and a jacket with a buttonup shirt. I thought he and his wife looked great on stage like that.
Biblically, modesty is our command. Beyond that I say dress how you feel most comfortable..and serve Him to the best of your ability.

Personally I think that a group should always dress in suits when they are sining in a church. However at other venues they should dress according to the type of event. For example if it were outdoors, dress pants and a dress shirt would be appropriate, etc.

The photo in the avatar as made last October so it is fairly recent and your guess on the age is also fairly accurate. However you misunderstood my post. I said they should dress not how they should dress. As long as they got on some clothes I don't think it really matters. Of course that is within limits of good taste.

I have spent the past several days reading and sometimes commenting on the question here and today God reminded me of the words He gave to one of my dear friend and I realized that it is not so much what a person wears that matters but what really matters is what the world sees when looking at God's people. In the words of Roger Bennett...

When the World Looks at Me
Verse
I want my life to be a light for those around me
I want my life to be that road map that says "home"
I want my life to be a beacon on life's raging sea
I want the world to see Jesus when they look at me!

Chorus
When the world looks at me
Do they see Jesus?
When the world looks at me
What do they see?
Do they see hope?
Do they see love?
Do they see charity?
When the world looks at me
What do they see?

Verse
When I spoke, did my words contain His wisdom?
When I prayed, did my prayers contain His love?
Did my life reflect the glory of His Spirit?
Did I show the ones around me they were loved?

I have realized what I should have known all along that as someone has already said here...the walk is more important than the clothes. Sometimes it can be the most simple thing that speaks to me and somehow I just realize what is important, at least for me anyway. Roger Bennett was truly one of the finest Christians I have ever known and I saw Roger in many different settings both onstage and off and no matter what he was wearing there was one thing always the same and that was his witness and testimony for God.
May God bless each and every SG artist today and every day....no matter what they are wearing.

One of the problems today -- and it is reflected in the various posts on this thread -- is that there is no one "standard" that all churches go by. There are still some that have rather stringent dress standards, whether stated or implied. Others are very relaxed. Some of us even feel the tug of war when "older" members may expect a certain type of dress for Sunday, while the "younger" are quite happy with a more relaxed & informal setting.

I suppose if a SG group really wants to play it safe, they ought to find out ahead of time what the standard is at the venue they are singing at and then try to dress somewhat accordingly. In a "suited" church they would look out of place in shorts and sandals, but in a really relaxed church they may look out of place (or worse) wearing suits.

And in the end, what we wear doesn't change what we are or the message we bring. All it does is make the audience feel more connected with them, which might have a bearing on the reception to the message they bring.

I wish things like this didn't matter to people, since the only Biblical standard is modesty, but unfortunately a lot of people get hung up on it.

having read the lyrics to that song, I have yet to see a word like suit or dress up.

it all goes down to choice for me. a suit is for funerals or weddings. ((( am not sure which of those is worse )))

just so all know, that was a joke.

I just do not feel comfortable in a suit and a tie. I just don't look right. and will not wear them. but that did not stop God from calling me to sing His music.

When we look at someone and see what they are wearing instead of the blessing they bringing from the Lord, are we not judging?

My Bible says in so many words, judge not yest ye be judged. yes that's the KJV way and I prefer NASB but haven't read the verse in NASB in so long have forgotten the way is worded.

so don't judge by what people wear or their hairstyle. if you judging them by way they dress or how they wear their hair, and if someone hears you that is lost and decides to not go see that show, what if that was their one chance to hear God's calling them to Him? Will you have an answer when you stand before Him? I am doing my best to make sure I don't have to ever answer that question

I typically agree with you, and have throughout this thread. The one exception is "judge not. . ." That is a reference to judging a lost world. Context is important. I agree that it should be a matter of personal preference. I sing classical music, a lot, and I can tell you from the depths of my heart, "I hate wearing a tuxedo to sing." However, it is expected in that line of work, so I do it.

The group I used to sing with rarely wore suits. I often sang in slacks, a dress shirt and a vest. Rarely wore a tie because I have a 20+ inch neck. They're not comfy, nor do they help me sing. Wear what's comfortable and appropriate for the setting.

And QT Man, I agree that they should definitely dress. No nakie singing. Ewwwwwwwwww.

I love the continued argument about groups possibly appearing in flip flops or shorts. To my knowledge, this is not something that is seen in SG, so I don't know why the scenario keeps getting brought up.

Personally, if it were an outdoor event, with high temps, I would not mandate that groups must wear suits. I think many of us would be thinking "Wow, I bet he's hot" as opposed to "What a great song!".

I'm singing at my home church on Sunday as part of a men's trio, and we're wearing black pants, nice tees, and sport coats. That's a Sunday look I can get behind......

I have been to out door events where the temps were very high and the artists were dressed accordingly. As a matter of fact I was at Toney Gore's Grand Opening and several of those artists were in shorts and t-shirts. No one in the audience seemed to have a problem with it as they were all dress in a similar fashion.

Thank you Qtman I think that is truly the best answer and an opinion that I truly wish that more shared with you. But alas everyone has their own opinion and so that is what makes life sometimes....interesting

Tenorsister I have posted twice in this thread. One post was as a joke. IMHO we tend to elevate SG artists to a level above everybody else. We do not take into consideration they are human just like the rest of us. THe suffer from the heat and cold just like we do. How can we sit in a venue, regardless of where it is, dressed comfortably and expect them to dress in some other way just to please us. Pleasing us is not what is is all about. They should be pleasing God and as long as they are not wearing anything revealing, immodest, or immoral I don't really think God cares.

Well I can't speak on everyone but I do know one SG artist VERY WELL and I can say that yes he is human and when it is hot he sweats! LOL

I'd rather see a group in tasteful khakis and polos vs. more than a few groups I've seen take the stage in suits...especially in hot settings.

We did a show a few years ago in a gym during the summer...no A/C...just a few fans in the doorways. One group went up and sweated like hogs in their suits. I thought the lead singer was going to pass out. His face was the same shade as a raw steak when he came off the stage.

You can be a little TOO committed to the notion of appearance, I think. At some point, common sense ought to come into play. It's difficult to communicate effectively when you're that uncomfortable.

Sorry for the misunderstanding QTFan, I too agree.. I think no naked singing is a dress rule that all groups ought to abide by.
