For those of you with late or non-existant bedtimes, do they have to be in their rooms by a certain time or can they be wherever in the house? Do you let them up and about the house after you are in bed?

I have trouble with the idea of the kids up and roaming the house after I've gone to bed. Also, I just think adults should have a chance to enjoy doing things without the kids and that the adults shouldn't have to go to bed to get that time.

zoebob-

in my situaton, dh is a truck driver and is away form home 3 weeks at a time, so the audlt time is pretty much non-existent lol. my oldest one is pretty much allowed to roam the house (which is really small ;), but my younger 2 are asleep before i go to bed - since i am a bit of a nightowl. i don't have much issue with them being able to hang as they please after hours - as the maturity and following of our rules is a norm (for my kids). i think th eonly issue i had was the oldest on the computer talking to her rl friends one night until 4am. i had never given a time to be off, so after that, i set the time, and it is followed. she's off at 2, and if she wants to watch tv or a movie, or listen to music - then i'm okay. childhood is such a short time in life...and one day very soon they will face all of the responsibilities that we face...i want them to enjoy it now [:)]

I am a single mom so there's no "adult time" so to speak but I still like some time up without the kids contantly around so I can watch a TV show I like without interruption, etc.

I tuck my kids in at 9 but the don't have to stay iin bed. THey do have to be quiet in their rooms. The girls (the older two) are generally asleep by 10. DS is up until I go up around 11 and is often awake later than I am but when I come up he at least lies down and tries to go to sleep.

Zoe ~ On Friday nights we don't have a bedtime. Pretty much the rule here is... kitchen is closed except for drinks. LIghts need to be pretty much off... they are allowed to watch tv, or play video games. If they wake us up... they end up going to bed. When it is just my kids here, they usually go to bed around 1 or so, sometimes earlier, on their own. When they have a friend here.... they have had times when they have woke us up, so they end up going to bed around 2 (that is usually the time they always end up waking us up... either a movie just got done, or they all got a burst of energy to play a game)

We really haven't had issues of staying up all night long, or running around uncontrollably. Even when our kids didn't have a bedtime, they would always turn in shortly after we did if not when we did.

Wow, now I have to think. When summer started, I promised myself that there would be strict bedtimes for the kids. Jake would have to be in bed by 9:30 but could read til 10 and the girls would be in bed by 8:00. I have been able to almost hold steady with the girls, but Jake stays up until he feels like it. I finally decided that this is supposed to be vacation for him and while he is not in charge, there is no harm in letting him stay up late. BUT he has to get up and be dressed and ready and in a "happy" mood when I tell him to usually around 8:30. So while my bedtime didn't work he does know that if he is crabby when he wakes up, I will enforce bedtime.

But the girls are easy. They go early and get up early. They are usually fed and dressed by the time I get up.

Since we are schooling in the summer too, there are no "summer" bedtimes. Both my girls are in bed at 9:30 but are usually up until 10 or so. I am a night owl, so my dh is usually in bed before me too. This time of night becomes my alone time. After some days, it is definitely needed. lol
