In order to get SSI (or SSDI), she would have to stop working. (Or, as least have no income deposited into her checking account and report no income.) Then, she would have to prove that she is disabled and unable to work. The irony is that after SSI or SSDI is approved, people are allowed to earn a small amount of income each month. Section 8 is very difficult to get. It is much easier to get a rent subsidized apartment. It does mean they would have to move, but the savings can be tremendous. She should apply for medical assistance and also find out about energy assistance. In some areas, energy assistance can only be used for heat, other communities allow the funds to be used once a year for either heating or cooling expenses. Peace, Anne
