psaulm119 -> Recommended cheap webhosting? (6/13/2008 10:45:52 AM)

I have been using gracenet.org for the past year for my small personal site (www.paulrittman.com) but need to change hosts. I'm getting a lot of down time (as evidenced by the timeouts when I try to access my own site). I have seen someone here recommend lunarpages; a blogger i like (chris pirillo) likes squidnet hosting. Is there any other decent host ($5-10/mo) that people have had personal experience with? I don't do a whole heck of a lot other than host files that students can d/l. I have one php script (for an email-contact form), I use a few page forwards and email forwards, no videos (although that might change in the future)... reeaallly basic here.

Hate to toot my own horn, but I have a server that's currently used mostly for ministry stuff, but would like to get a few other sites on it that would help pay for it. $5/month would be plenty for a basic site with no videos, maybe towards then $10 range if you have those. My uptime is pretty good and if you need something special I can probably accommodate it as long as it's open source (*NO* M$ FrontPage extensions!!! [:D]). You can PM me if interested.

About a year ago, on the recommendation of someone, I signed up for powweb.com hosting and I've been pretty disappointed thus far. There's been quite a bit of downtime and the e-mail system will sporadically drop messages.

Sorry to hear you've been disappointed, but thanks nonetheless for your caveat. B/c finding a new host, and then uploading all the files and images will be such a pain, I'd rather weed out the bad ones beforehand. If anyone else has a "Don't go there" please lemme know.

www.1and1.com One of the best, I'm considering using them myself (I know others who have no complaints and great speed on it).
www.bluehost.com My prof didn't have any problems after we had it set up properly.
www.superwebhost.com My church and myself haven't had any problems with SuperWebHost.

And though I hate to mention it, GoDaddy is the cheapest.

Yeah, that was probably me. I withdraw the recommendation based on what I've personally experienced over the past several months. Things have changed there. Not to the point where I need to move my domains, but enough that I won't be hosting any new ones with them.

Try Doteasy.com . Several years ago I was using it and was quite happy with it.

OK thanks for the heads up.

Hey, psaulm.

I run my quartet's website through hostek.com. They have a special deal for ministries and I've not had but maybe 2 hours of down time since I started with them in December 07. The site is ministryweb.org. They're very reasonable, have great customer service, and lots of features. After my previous provider which was a constant battle for almost 4 years, this service is stable and reliable. I highly recommend them!!!

We'd like to hear more about your recent experience, since we have a domain hosted with them. It's just sitting there now, but we'd like to get our son working on activating it again. If there are problems we may run into, we'd appreciate the warning.

Webmail is excruciatingly slow, and it times out frequently, requiring frequent page reloads on the user's part. Doesn't matter whether you're using Horde or SquirrelMail. This is with secure sessions. Insecure sessions may be different (but I'd never use them).

Pagemason is a mess. I haven't tried it with IE -- it may work with that. It doesn't work with Firefox, and that's the first test anything has to pass to get into my front door. WAIT -- I just tested it again with Firefox on a brand new Dell, same Firefox version I was using before, same XP (SP3), and one feature that wasn't working before now works. So, go figure . . . Some time ago I used PM to design a few pages but got some pretty serious screen corruption using Firefox and SeaMonkey. As I recall, you couldn't go in and edit your own code to dig out the problem, but on the other hand I was pretty turned off by that point so I didn't really investigate. That was as far as I needed to go with the exercise.

Oh. Here's a screen from my logout attempt just now:

Network Timeout
The server at account.lunarpages.com is taking too long to respond.
The requested site did not respond to a connection request and the browser has stopped waiting for a reply.

* Could the server be experiencing high demand or a temporary outage? Try again later.
* Are you unable to browse other sites? Check the computer's network connection.
* Is your computer or network protected by a firewall or proxy? Incorrect settings can interfere with Web browsing.
* Still having trouble? Consult your network administrator or Internet provider for assistance.

Typical of what I see every day with them. EVERY day. However, if all you're going to do is throw up a few hand-coded static pages, you'll probably be okay. I have static pages out there and they've always come up fine. Everyone's needs are different.

Thanks. It sounds a bit ominous. I need to put up a forums that the kids are going to use to help with music lessons and to log practices and other school related stuff that they are working on, soooo... <sigh> at least I have heads up. Thanks.

imagineopeneyes -> RE: Recommended cheap webhosting? (7/3/2008 8:19:43 AM)

I have used Yahoo, GoDaddy, Microsoft Live hosting, ixwebhosting, comcast, google (yes google has hosting) :) and hostmonster.

Hostmonster has the most features and best service out of all the sites I have used. TWO THUMBS way up. :)

If you want something very easy to use then you might want to go with something like http://www.homestead.com/

FreeEagle -> RE: Recommended cheap webhosting? (7/5/2008 1:42:56 PM)

I reviewed over twenty sites before I decided and I'm in the process of switching hosts right now, so I can't say for sure how their service is, but by the reports I reviewed customers are very happy with Web Hosting Pad I just never wish the task of transferring on anyone. I chose them because they had more bells and whistles then any other, more space, and videos of how to work every thing, for a fraction of the cost. I wouldn't mention my old host as I still have another site with them, had little down time, and excellent support. But for the site I'm transferring I just out grew them, was getting too much traffic, and had to upgrade for the features I wish to bring to my customers.
