Stratplayer -> Corn Syrup (6/13/2008 2:14:53 PM)

Is there a difference between "high-fructose corn syrup" and plain old "corn syrup" like you buy in the store and is either really any worse for you than regular sugar?

isaacsmom -> RE: Corn Syrup (6/13/2008 2:45:45 PM)

quote:

High fructose corn syrup is made from corn syrup through an enzymatic action that converts the dextrose sugar (in the corn syrup) into fructose sugar. HFCS is sweeter than corn syrup, which is why you find it in so many foods both processed and fast food, and especially sodas (the corn syrup isn’t sweet enough to be used in sodas).

from HERE.

Any refined sugar is not good for the body at all. Read some info HERE.

What exactly does "refined" mean? What about the regular sugar you buy?

isaacsmom -> RE: Corn Syrup (6/14/2008 11:27:05 AM)

Refined = processed, it's had all the essential vitamins, minerals, nutrients, etc. removed. Same with white flour and white rice. That's why they "enrich" it with other things, because they've stripped it.

eta: Corn syrup is very different from cane sugar though. It's made from corn. White sugar is made from cane. Just google the processes to see how they're made.

Just remember, it's generally the amount that you're eating that is generally more harmful than the fact you're eating it.

A little of something now and again probably isn't going to damage your health (given there are no underlying health conditions). To eat something daily will probably have impact on your health.

Yes, very true.

Definition of HFCS - well a few HERE.
The one that I like the best:

Derived from cornstarch, usually a combination of 55 percent fructose and 45 percent sucrose. Treated with an enzyme that converts glucose to fructose, which results in a sweeter product. Used in soft drinks, baked goods, jelly, syrups, fruits and desserts.

Definition of Corn Syrup HERE
The one that I like the best:

Made from cornstarch. Mostly glucose. Can have maltose.

BOTH products are process and refined and enzymatically changed sugar crystals. Corn Syrup is used as a thickener in cooking, HFCS is used as a sweetener in mass production of foods - it's not available to the private consumer.

My personal answer? When you take something found in nature, Corn, and transform it into something so very far from it's original state as to classify it as a whole new food product I think you are in for potential problems.

I much prefer using Cane Sugars, as close to raw as possible and honey to sweeten things. I cannot tolerate most artificial sugar products though either, such as Splenda, Equal or NutriSweet - they've all been perversely changed Cane Sugar and my system doesn't like them.

I can handle Corn Syrup ok in small quantities - like the tablespoon or so needed to help make a caramel from sugar and water.

I have trouble sometimes with HFCS in that I can get a headache and other problems if I eat/drink something that is heavily laden with it.

I tend to look at labels and make sure it's something I REALLY want to eat if there is corn based sweetener used.

And yes, common sense tells us that something in moderation may be ok, but when you go over board you are asking for problems.

ITA.
Though my basic preferences when it comes to sugar is to avoid white sugar if at all possible just because of how overly processed it is. I try to find things that contain sugar in more raw forms, but sadly that's really hard to find these days without paying for items that are very over priced for what they are.

agapetos -> RE: Corn Syrup (6/20/2008 6:57:53 PM)

It's gone midnight here, what does ITA mean?

"I Totally Agree" :)

Also, some granular white sugar is made from sugar beets rather than cane. Depends on the company making it. (My brother grew some sugar beets for 4H when we were kids a bizillion years ago. It was cool going to the processing plant to pick up the sugar refined from his beets.)

Like many of you, I also try to stay away from refined sugars (and flours and so forth) as well as artificial sweeteners (or anything else). For substitute sugar, I use whatever form of stevia I like best, agave nectar, honey, or maple syrup.

StephK -> RE: Corn Syrup (6/21/2008 8:49:01 PM)

I personally think that HFCS is evil. [sm=angertalk.gif][sm=icon_smile_evil.gif] I can't tolerate corn syrup at all. I can tolerate regular sugar a lot more without going into sugar shock. Regular natural syrups don't bother me as much either like maple syrup and pure cane syrup. I get dizzy and extremely sleepy with high fructose corn syrup.

Is corn syrup and high fructose corn syrup the same thing?

Agreed. IMO, ALL corn fillers; starch, syrup, modified solids, etc are all evil, but HFCS is the worst of the lot.
