We are involved in full time ministry. We strongly believe our time at this location is at the end, and are looking to relocate back to the Dallas area. We have some family there, and none here. We having been praying for God to show us which direction to take and know that we also need to actively seek. We have training for full time ministry, but don't see many opportunities to do so as a living. Should we seek secular employment and then look for ministry? Any advice would be greatly appreciated and taken into prayer.

There is nothing wrong with supporting yourself or even supporting yourself and the ministry. It was good enough for the Apostle Paul, it was good enough for me, and it is good enough for you. you want to move to the Dallas area, go for it; lots of jobs. Get settled, start a ministry, or join in an existing one and carry on for the cause. Thanks RC

My husband and I live in Dallas and he just graduated from seminary (DTS) and is looking for a full time job. We are finding that with so many Bible colleges and seminaries around here, the area seems to be saturated with ministers and it is harder to find a job in the ministry here than in other parts of the country. I'm not saying that it isn't possible because there are plenty of churches around here, but most of my husband's classmates are finding that they have to look outside of DFW in order to find a job in ministry. With some years of experience, however, you might have an edge over these recent seminary grads [;)]

Pray much about it and dont let family be the reason for leaving a ministry. Remember Jesus said if anyone does not hate their family they can not be His disciples. Of course meaning that they must love Him more. Now ministry is slightly different but a change in ministry is something that should be done with much prayer. If He is leading you to a different local then there is no problem of getting a job outside of ministry for a while. Some feel that if they are called to ministry then they should not work in secular job. This is not the case we need to follow the Lord in all matters and if He is changing location He could also be calling you to a different aspect of ministry. He has changed my ministry a few times it is part of the growing and maturing we go through. I know of several ministers and pastors including senior pastors who work another job or are retired and collect pension from work and are not paid for ministry at all. My current pastor is retired recently but previously while a pastor worked a job. He has been the pastor of this church for over 11 years and has not received any salary. With the church coming to paying off our mortgage this year I am hoping to get the church to vote that money to paying the Pastor. This because I feel it is right to support the pastor and it is biblical to do so. Besides the pastor will probably spend most of it on the church anyway. Sometimes the Lord will put us in different positions so we are more well rounded in ministry and we can handle more situations having gone through them. Also one of the verses not many like to recall is that the Father is the vine dresser and the branches that bear fruit He also prunes so they can bear more fruit. This may be your pruning time.
