I manage a credit union. This morning I received a call from a woman in San Antonio who told me she could not get a car loan because her credit report showed the credit union as having her on a car loan. This woman is not nor has ever been a member. She has not been reported by us as having a loan here. She gave me the account number; it belongs to an individual who has the same last name. His wife is on the loan as joint borrower; neither has a Social Security # that is close to the woman's. However, the wife and the woman who called do share a common birth date.
I first checked via the internet with Experian and there was nothing listed showing she had anything with us. Equifax had to be called. They were the cuplprits. My member has two current loans and one that was paid off several years ago; she's on all of them. I asked the person at Equifax why they were reporting information that they never received. It seems the Social Security number is the last thing they look at. The address is the first thing. Which makes me wonder if they look at everyone who has lived in Andrews, Texas and whose last name is XYZ and puts them on the pertinent XYZ's loans. The person at Equifax asked me what the problem was that the woman was having, the loans had good history. Well, my goodness, they aren't hers and, duh, she wants a car for herself and she can't get it because you fixed her up really great.
I've sent a letter to the FTC. I don't know what they will do about it, if anything can be done to force Equifax to change its method of entering information. I told the FTC that I am tired of cleaning up Equifax's mistakes (I've figured out now that several other inquiries that I've received were due to Equifax's reporting errors.).
So if you have an Equifax credit report with erroenous information, the creditor probably did not report you. It was just Equifax deciding you needed some credit on your account.

I can't even put into words how stupid this sounds. And she works at Equifax. This is scary.

Daystar, I've come across MANY similar stories in my years in real estate. When ever someone calls me planning to buy a house, I tell them to pull their own credit report on AnnualCreditReport.com. The reporting agencies are notorious for false, misleading, and misinformation... yet for THEM, there is no law against it! Now you let you or I try, and we'll have fair housing, OCC, FTC, and many other gobment acronyms after us.
What she needs to do, and this will take time, is pull her reports and object in writing. They do have a month or so to get it checked out. But if they don't act in a timely matter, she can file a complaint. It's not uncommon to take 3-6 months to get miss reported credit problems corrected.

There is a site called E-Oscar where creditors go to make corrections to all the major credit bureau's data. I did that this a.m. I deleted her from my member's three loans. I also sent her a letter to give to potential lenders stating that she has no loans here.
Actually, the way that it is supposed to work is the individual contacts the credit bureau; the credit bureau through E-Oscar contacts the creditor; if the creditor has not responded within 30 days, the information is supposed to be deleted from the individual's credit report.
I upload the very same information to Experian and Equifax. Experian did not add any additional information. This has caused me to consider not uploading to Equifax in more.

I'd have to look again, but I believe Equifax is the CRA that has an address listed for me in Pflugerville, TX. I've tried to have it removed repeatedly over the years, but it's still there. I've never lived in Pflugerville and in fact, I don't even know where Pflugerville is.
