Have you stopped buying tomatoes because of the salmonella scare?

lexie -> RE: Have you stopped buying tomatoes because of the salmonella scare? (6/15/2008 12:06:09 PM)

I've stopped eating tomatoes with my food when I eat out, just because I don't know where they get their tomatoes from. The salmonella outbreak doesn't include Canadian tomatoes, but a lot of fast food places here have stopped using tomatoes.

I'm comfortable buying Ontario tomatoes, and I'm not worried about the same thing happening here.

I didn't bu tomatoes that often anyway. I did eat tomatoes on my Sub at Subway though. They had a sign up saying that their tomatoes weren't among those contamnated.

I don't buy fresh tomatoes often either, but I do buy fresh salsa and I was scared they were going to run out. LOL

I haven't bought tomatos (other then the canned variety) in a while from the stores. Any fresh tomatos are either boughten on the vine or from local growers at a nearby farmers market - also now that I think about it, they are also "on the vine."

Blessings,

Garsy

I haven't stopped buying them at the store. Our local grocery store has a sign posted saying theirs are safe. If I were eating out, I'd probably skip them. I can't wait for my own to start ripening!

cindybode -> RE: Have you stopped buying tomatoes because of the salmonella scare? (6/15/2008 3:41:20 PM)

If they don't come out of my garden, I don't eat 'em, not because of salmonella but because I can't stand the taste of those things they call tomatoes in the store.

monamie -> RE: Have you stopped buying tomatoes because of the salmonella scare? (6/15/2008 7:30:54 PM)

In the store, I only buy canned (for sauces, soups, etc.)---for fresh, I "buy fresh, buy local" so I'm not nervous about it.

I bought a package of three last Tuesday, and so far we've eaten two of them. The third goes in a breakfast dish tomorrow morning, and so far we haven't had any trouble with the last two we had, so I'm not worried about the third. Tomatoes are a staple around here.

Auben -> RE: Have you stopped buying tomatoes because of the salmonella scare? (6/16/2008 8:48:46 AM)

Don't really like 'fresh' store tomatoes. We eat canned until local ones are ready.

uncabeeil -> RE: Have you stopped buying tomatoes because of the salmonella scare? (6/16/2008 11:02:16 AM)

I'm only buying grape or cherry tomatoes, or from local farm stands.

HisCovenant -> RE: Have you stopped buying tomatoes because of the salmonella scare? (6/16/2008 12:48:24 PM)

Nope, but my state's tomatoes are still good. I did throw one out, though, because I couldn't remember if it was local.

MrsTracy72 -> RE: Have you stopped buying tomatoes because of the salmonella scare? (6/16/2008 10:05:44 PM)

I will buy them when I go shopping. I know that we went to Red Robin for burgers on Father's day. It was Hubby's choice. And I forgot all about the tomato thing until I got my burger and had to add extra ketchup. It was a bummer.

Roberta_ -> RE: Have you stopped buying tomatoes because of the salmonella scare? (6/18/2008 7:46:41 AM)

It does seem weird getting a burger without tomatoes on it!

I do prefer home grown ones, but don't have a garden this year.

I haven't bought any from the stores, mainly because they aren't as good.

Calea37 -> RE: Have you stopped buying tomatoes because of the salmonella scare? (6/18/2008 10:45:10 AM)

I always buy stem tomatoes anyway, so it hasn't made a difference to me...Except that now there are fewer stems to choose from because that is what everyone is buying right now..[:@]

fluffmonkey -> RE: Have you stopped buying tomatoes because of the salmonella scare? (6/18/2008 11:55:33 AM)

Yea from our local farm because I know those people and know they are safe to eat, although I did have some at subway...

seagullplayer -> RE: Have you stopped buying tomatoes because of the salmonella scare? (6/18/2008 11:57:55 AM)

My wife and I stacked ours last night, we have several green ones now, if a few weeks we won't have to buy any...

And the peppers look good to for that matter, eat one last night. Home made salsa is around the corner! [:)]

Harvie -> RE: Have you stopped buying tomatoes because of the salmonella scare? (6/18/2008 4:50:56 PM)

I buy tomatoes ALL the time from Whole Foods and Trader Joe's ... and didn't stop because of the salmonella scare.

MamaPyratekk -> RE: Have you stopped buying tomatoes because of the salmonella scare? (6/22/2008 10:48:47 AM)

I've been sticking to the ones I usually buy which are organic local ones that they sell in the grocer I go to. They try to stock mostly local fruits and veggies, and I'm pretty comfy with the ones that I buy. I've been eating them through the entire scare with no problems.

APZR -> RE: Have you stopped buying tomatoes because of the salmonella scare? (6/22/2008 3:11:08 PM)

No change, still buy and eat them. Most are locally grown, but even those need to be WASHED before eaten. It's all in how you prep and clean your food.

wfisaac -> RE: Have you stopped buying tomatoes because of the salmonella scare? (6/24/2008 8:14:02 PM)

A lot of places around here voluntarily pulled the tomatoes off their menu items. But yesterday I went to Subway and requested tomato and got it and totally forgot about the whole deal until I was about half way done eating my sandwich and then thought oh well....I'm this far into it, might as well finish it.

And I love tomatoes and usually buy at the farmers market and at the grocery store I normally get the cherry ones or the vine ones.

Karaboo2 -> RE: Have you stopped buying tomatoes because of the salmonella scare? (6/24/2008 8:35:47 PM)

I'm still amused that most fast food places here in my city (in Ontario, Canada) have pulled the tomatoes from all products, but I didn't encounter a single fast food place across the bridge which did, even though it is the US tomatoes which are contaminated, not the Canadian ones.

cheeky_monkey -> RE: Have you stopped buying tomatoes because of the salmonella scare? (6/25/2008 12:49:02 AM)

If I were a tomato eater I would stop buying them. I've had salmonella before and have no desire to go through that again!

Laine99 -> RE: Have you stopped buying tomatoes because of the salmonella scare? (6/26/2008 8:42:07 AM)

I have a few questions,
I understand how cut/sliced/diced tomatoes can get samonella, but how does a whole tomato become infected?
Does the bacteria stay only on the surface or is it actually in the meat of the tomato?
If it's only on the surface...would washing the produce eliminate it?
Our local McDonald's did post a sign they would not be serving tomatoes due to the outbreak of samonella.

Thanks hun for reassuring me. I purchase tomatoes every week! (((Kara)))[;)]
