I've read the thread. I don't know if I can explain my thoughts well, but I'll try. Christ showed a great condescension when becoming our brother and our friend. By condescension, I refer to the old meaning of a higher person bending down to speak with one below them, like when a king is on friendly terms with those below him. Christ literally descended to humanity for us. The term "friend" for Christ is at great sacrificial cost. I cannot degrade that friendship with the Creator by referring to Him with such human terms of condescension from me to Him. If I call Him friend, it is with great reverence and recognition that He gave His life for me while I was yet a sinner. While He has condescended to me, it is not my place to condescend to Him by calling Him "dude" or "buddy" or "old man in the sky". Now, if a drunk on the street is praying to God for the first time and in ignorance of God's greatness refers to Him as "dude", I think God is gracious and merciful. But for those who have heard, seen, and known of God's greatness, referring to Him as "dude" is purposefully condescending from man to God. While He can descend to us, it is not right for us to place Him into lowliness. We are not high--it is not our place to condescend to God. When we speak to Him knowingly with such base terminology, it is us condescending to Him as if we are superior and He is inferior, or even as if we are equals--which we are clearly not.

Now, see, again, you're assuming disrespect from "dude". Obviously, you take it as being disrespectful. And that's good, I'm glad you have that conviction in your heart. But other people do not have that conviction, and they mean no disrespect when they say "dude". For some, it may well be how they address people who are inferior, equal, or superior - in other words, everyone. And personally, I think God cares a lot more about the heart attitude and content behind our prayers than He does about what we call Him in those prayers.

I want to preface my comments with the fact that I personally would never use the word dude to refer to the Lord. It is disrespectful to me. But that's me, and others may not think of it as a familiar term as Crankius is thinking of it. What do you think about ever referring to the Lord as "The Man?"

However, probably a soldier here or there has prayed "sir" when in intense prayer moments.

I think I'm older than you (and I know I'm older than Roberta), and I actually heard that phrase used in a sermon, and it was far from irreverent. But I guess you had to be there. No one who was there took it to mean irreverence but quite the reverse, and that phrase was used to express it several times, and every time it was said, there was a chorus of amens. The sermon was in part addressing the deity of Christ and how He was and is the only one who could atone for sin and how He is the one worthy to be praised and how we should get on our faces before Him. Obviously, my point is that different forms of expression can be received differently by different people. I think that's possible with dude. I don't care for it, because I will probably always trip on the connotation I attach to it . But others may not. All that aside, I reiterate that I think (which means I don't know for sure but strongly suspect) this pastor Roberta is describing made a very lame attempt at "being relevant," and the end result is irreverence, and that's because it seems he was trying to please man and not the Lord. This is a thread running through all the fads in the Church. It's all about appealing to people. Pitiful frankly.

Should we get our correct terminology for God from God's Word, or should we get our terminology for God from the culture? I think we have to be very careful about this. We could easily distort the accuracy of who God is by increasingly using slang terms from our culture. This is why I think it matters how much we know and understand about God from Scripture. We should speak carefully with right doctrine and this includes paying great attention to our language.

When I was first saved 14 years ago, it probably wouldn't have bothered me. In fact, I might have gotten a chuckle out of it. 14 years later though, I don't find it acceptable. I find it disrespectful. I'm not sure if I'm getting more mature or just old.

For most of those present, it was a perfect description, and it was in no way derogatory. Would I ever refer to the Lord that way? I doubt it, but I realize that referring to Him that way is not always derogatory. I think that's possible with 'dude.'

Some of my prayers have gone, "Dude. . . .Jesus. . . I'm not doing so well." Or maybe, "Hey man. . . I really need you right now." I guess if that is disrespectful. . . then I guess I'm just a disrespectful guy.

Or hey, how about this one. . . As I fall more in more in love with this girl, sometimes I just smile and shout to God, "Dude, God, man, thank you so much! Leah is so awesome, and you are even more awesome, man. Dude, it's been so long since I felt this way, and I am so happy right now. I love you so much!" I'm sure God is going to be displeased with that prayer. Probably thinking to Himself, "I did not send my Son to die on a cross so that you could be yourself before me. Next time you better say it right, like, 'Dear Heavenly Father, Oh Holy One of Israel, all praise unto you, for you art worthy to be praise. I bow before thee with a grateful heart for Leah this morn. Allow your love to continue to shine through me into her life and to continue to be blessed by her fellowship Amen.'" Ahhhh yeah, that'll do much better, right?
