Szaftoo -> Question if you have inside shutters? (6/16/2008 11:11:13 AM)

We are thinking about shutters for the inside but it may depend on the cost. I am assuming we can find them in the correct size without having to have them made special. If so, would my husband be able to install them himself? Does anyone have any hints or suggestions?

I have indoor shutters in my dining room. They were there before we moved in, but they are just attached with simple hinges. The shutters are the wider-sized ones (prolly 12-15 inches across) that you can get any home store.

I hate cleaning them, but it's worth it for how great they look in that room.

Thanks for the helpful reply. One thing I didn't consider was cleaning them but that's just part of it. Can I ask one more question? Do you also have drapes or window coverings and if so, how does that work with opening the shutters?

Oh, I found your site interesting and can't wait to browse it.

My shutters are only cover the bottom 2/3 of my windows, and I have a valance at the top.

However, a friend's mom put in full length shutters. She then took 2 1X8 pieces of wood - had them glued together and used them to staple panels on to make a valance (she covered the wood with lining, stapled it and then arranged the panels so they looked awesome).

Did that make sense?

The valance stuck out enough from the wall, so the shutter could be opened without a problem.

She did a similar thing for her sunroom, but the topper has more of an awning shape.

If I replace my shutters with full size ones, I'll probably do something similar.

We have white shutters in four rooms of our house ... with no other window coverings on those windows (other than stained glass hangings). I really like them!

doinkdom, I totally get what you are saying from your description and will check it out. It sounds like something I could do and I will definately look into it.

Harvie, currently I have drapes with no privacy shades or blinds at all and I love it. I like things very open so I can see out. However, I know my family would rather have a way to close them off at night. I have always loved stained glass and it may be a possibility also.

Thanks a ton for the replies, gives me something to think about.

When you get it all done - I'd love to see pictures.

I'm re-doing my kitchen window this weekend and if I finish it, I'll take some pictures and post them on the home decor thread if I can find it.

If I can figure out how to do it, I will take pictures of what I currently have on the windows which I plan to remove and replace with the shutters.
I would love to see yours if you have time.
