I forgot to put the why. [:D] 1) Pursuit of God by A.W. Tozer. This particular book was the first time I really got hold of the fact that the Lord sought me first. After I read it, I realized the scriptures were replete with examples of the Lord pursuing us. I'm particularly fond of chapter 6. Read it the first time at 18, and I still credit it with being the most life altering book I've read apart from scripture. 2) Normal Christian Life by Watchman Nee This book spoke about identity in Christ with much more depth than I had ever heard, and as a result presented an even more intimate view of walking with the Lord than I had ever been exposed. But frankly, I didn't get the last half of the book the first time or even the second time I read this book. It wasn't until about the fifth time through that I began to grab hold of it. Read it the first time (of many times) at 20 years old, and one of many books/studies I've been through on Romans -- a book in scripture which should be studied by every Christian in my opinion. 3) Oneness with Christ by David Kuykendall This book was written by a former pastor of mine. It is a study of Romans as Normal Christian Life is, and I sat through my pastor's year long study on the book of Romans while I was reading it. Probably read this just a few months after finishing Watchman Nee's book. It was a pivotal study at a very pivotal time in my life. I've thanked the Lord many times for providing it and my pastor. 3) Tortured for the Faith by Richard Wurmbrand Just a good head spinning book about what it means to be sold out for the Lord. I've often thought about instances conveyed in the book, and for years now I have been involved with Voice of the Martyrs due to my respect for Wurmbrand. 4) Foxes Book of Martyrs Ought to be read by every Christian. I don't remember exactly when I read it, but it was some time the last year or so of college. It is humbling and enlighteneing, and I've since read it several times and read it to my children as well. 6) Divine Conspiracy by Dallas Willard Hmm. What can I say about this book? It is another book that gets at our identity in Christ and our walk with Him. I think I like this book so much because he speaks of things I had been thinking for years. Read this one about 10 years ago . I'll add one more that wasn't on my original list: 7) Revolution by Gene Edwards This book is aptly named. I read it the last year of college, and it had a profound effect on me. It helped in part to explain my disillusionment with the traditional church of almost 30 years ago. But there were some things that set me on the wrong road. Whatever the case, this book is one of those writings thas has had a profound effect on a lot of people, but I daresay most of them haven't read it let alone heard of it. This book is in great part responsible for the house church movement that began in the late 70s/early 80s and is reaching the mainstream today. My husband and I had a house church in the mid-80s because we wanted to break free of the extraBiblical trappings of the church, and Revolution was part of what facilitated that. You see my husband also read this book when he was in college. We learned a lot from that experience, and it helps us understand what's going on in the Church today -- at least the Church in America. BTW, I find it a little funny (odd) that 30+ years later Barna named his book about people exiting the traditional church for alternative church gatherings by the same name.
