Does anyone know of a program that gives away NIV Bibles in Spanish, paperbacks? I sure would love to get some down here. We have a case of the 1960 version but it's like our King James version and harder to understand with the thee's and thou's.

Thanks!

I believe the Spanish version of NIV is called NVI, if that helps at all (same organization translated as NIV)

There are a lot of discount versions out there, but I haven't seen any free ones. You might see if the Gideons can provide you with any, their website is gideons.org (my dad is a Gideon, they're the ones who place free bibles in hotels and such, the organization is international so they might be able to help you), though I'm not sure if they have NVI available.

Yes, it's the NVI, and it is a reasonably good translation.

However you'll never find it for free because the International "Bible" Society holds copyrights and puts strict limits on what can be done with God's Word. Someone needs to slap those folks upside the head and tell them that God's Word is supposed to be used and given freely, not subject to board-of-directors-imposed limitations!

Sorry, hot-button topic for me ...

I suppose I can look up Open Doors and see if they'd bring some down. I'm sure there are free Bibles out there. Yes, it's NVI, that's what I prefer to use.

You'd be shocked at how little material is available, in hand, in Spanish. Slim pickens! We are blessed to have been given some outdated material by a Spanish church in the states that passed it to a ministry on the border. When we passed through, it was given to us and presently being used for our children's ministry.

I love to see such passion for spreading the Word of God.

Why don't you buy a hundred or so of these Bibles, and send them to Funny--girl to help in their ministry.

Thanks

Could you ask your supporting churches to donate a few boxes? (I'd be asking for La Biblia de las Américas if it were me, though [;)]) I've seen the NVI as cheap as a dollar each, but never for free. I used to have a box full of the gospel of John in Spanish that I got for free, but I don't remember where they came from. I'd be willing to shell out the money myself to give people the NVI instead of the RV, if it came to that.

funny_girl -> RE: NIV Bibles in Spanish (6/19/2008 2:00:12 AM)

I'm not sure how we could do that because I don't want to violate the TOS16 or something. One of my first posts was in response to someone wanting to donate to a charity and they deleted my posts and said it was in violation. One way that I think would work is if people wanted to send something to this border ministry and as the missionaries come in and out we bring things in for each other. Last trip we brought back boxes for some other missionaries and their packages had been sitting on the border for some time. It's kind of fun being a messenger.

It's called Laredo Stepping Stones and they collect donations and help distribute them to the different ministries that come through. That's how we got our hands on the used children's curriculmn and the box of RV.

I would pay for printing of free (libre) Bibles, and would certainly consider supporting a translator who allowed his work to be used without license fees. But buying a box of Bibles that would support fat-cat copyright holders would be hard to choke down.

Funny_Girl -- cool, you're not all that far from me. So you work with various ministries? I know several people at the World Radio Network in McAllen. I don't know if you have any contact with them.

funny_girl -> RE: NIV Bibles in Spanish (6/19/2008 11:39:05 AM)

I live in Jalisco, Mexico. It's about 12 hours from McAllen and Lorado, which are border crossing cities.

We've ministered on radio, one was based out of Buffalo, N.Y. and Radio Maria, Catholic radio down here.

An update. Last Sunday a visiting future expat asked if he could buy one of our Spanish N.T.. I tried to discourage him because supplies are so hard to find and he could easily find something in the states. After explaining the need we have he's sending us 20 NIV Spanish Bibles in July with his brother! Pretty cool, eh?!

Shrommer -> RE: NIV Bibles in Spanish (6/26/2008 11:13:50 PM)

In Spanish there are good revisions of the Reina-Valera Bible since the 1960 version. The "thee's and thou's" problem is that the "vosotros" form is used in Spain regularly, but not in Latin America hardly at all. It sounds archaic to Latin Americans, but it sounds modern in Spain. Perhaps you should try a Biblia de la Americas. I am not sure that the NIV in Spanish would fix the vosotros problem, since it's geographical more than historical. There is also a Biblia al Dia.

A lot of these Spanish versions are available on biblegateway.com if the readers have internet access.

funny_girl -> RE: NIV Bibles in Spanish (6/26/2008 11:33:59 PM)

We use NVI and so the that's what the people want.

Thanks

PolarBear -> RE: NIV Bibles in Spanish (6/28/2008 5:15:21 AM)

Yes, NVI is pretty good; it does not use Vosotros. I object to copyright restrictions more than the translation itself.

Biblia de las Americas is also pretty readable.

There's also one in simple Spanish for those learning Spanish, perhaps pretty useful to some of the indigenous communities who speak Spanish as a second language.

funny_girl -> RE: NIV Bibles in Spanish (6/30/2008 12:20:41 AM)

My husband said that las Americas was similar to a Living Bible. Many of the indigenous can't read. There was a older YWAMer traveling around with an audio Bible for those that couldn't read. That way whole groups could listen at the same time. I'm sure they need more.

KuKu -> RE: NIV Bibles in Spanish (6/30/2008 12:27:17 AM)

I have a LBLA bilingual Bible that I got at a missions convention. It is the spanish version of the NASB... I got it directly from the publisher several years ago.

I used to have resources for Bibles, though I have lost the vast majority of them, but I'll look around a bit. Do you have anyone at a sending church who would take this on as a personal ministry? One of our missionaries had a guy who sent about 12 cases a year. He wasn't into giving 'money' to anything, but took this on as a project.
