Little_1 -> There are different types of love (6/17/2008 3:03:04 AM)

According to the Bible - there are various types of love (if I remember rightly - there may be 6 different types)......

e.g.

1. Agápe – the love of God (unconditional love).

2. Philía - the love between friends or known as brotherly love.

3. Storgé - familial love, especially between parents and their children and also with close relatives.

4. Éros – sexual attraction.
---------------------------------------------------------

I cannot remember the others! Can anyone help out please and give a brief description of what they mean? Appreciated.

Those 4 are in CS Lewis' book "The Four Loves." All are from classic Greek, but AFAIK Storge does not appear in the NT. Although his defs are somewhat different, you got the right idea. He lists storge as the long time sense of belonging together and includes romance in eros.

From the Hebrew scriptures we have ahava, chashak and dod.

Ahava is affection, similar to phileo
Dod is sexual love, similar to eros
Chashak means to cling to, to long to be joined to.

I have felt a little slighted as an English-speaker since we have only the one word to express so many differing sentiments. I love my God, I love my husband, I love my children, I love chocolate, yet other cultures get to express exactly what they mean using very distict verbage. I just get the one word and it feels inadequate-- especially in light of the socially disproportionate attention on the "eros" type of love in our culture.

Whoops-- I just read under the dashes of your post... I don't guess this answers your question-- just MHO---[:D]
