This may seem to be a silly question, but I'll ask anyway.
For those of you who rock and sing to your babies, what songs do you sing?
I'm having some issues with knowing the lyrics to anything besides Twinkle Twinkle and Rock a Bye Baby.

I sang hymns to my children...Amazing Grace, There's Just Something About That Name, etc. Those two just happened to be the favorites of the last two children... :)

I would just tell them my lifestory. That should knock 'em out in no time.

There was a day when my kids thought I was a human jukebox, but it is long gone.

I sang what became known as 'the ni-night song' which is the lullaby from Peter Pan (er, not the cartoon version). Also a lot of old music-nat king cole and such. And hymns.

Hahaha!

When they don't understand words I sing soft sounding songs I know....any will do.

Flies on the Butter, Whiskey Lulluby, Dixieland Delight...doesn't matter.

If you're wanting to learn the words of songs you kinda know, you can find them on a lyrics site. If you're wanting to sing a song and you don't know how it goes, you can create a playlist at playlist.com and listen that way.

I sing anything to my kiddos. I sing all the time, so I usually just sing whatever I happen to be humming to myself at that moment, LOL.

My kids both had songs they really loved as infants -- but they only loved them if their daddy was singing them. He sang a song called "Bow Wow" to our son, and "C is for Cookie" to our daughter.

I sing hymns, kid's Bible songs, lullabies, and the occasional Swan & Flanders number. My dad used to put us to sleep with songs like "The Gnu" and "The Sloth" mixed with lullabies from the British Isles.

Actually, I haven't been singing at bed time as much as I would like to for them. We have ton of great music on CD and they always fall asleep listening to something good.

btw, the way to learn new songs is to listen and sing along over and over again. Pick the kind of music you want to be singing to your baby, and pop the cd in while you're rocking them to sleep.

LOL @ C is for Cookie! I sing that in the Cookie Monster voice to Timmy, and he cracks up! He even laughs harder if I pretend his Cookie Monster stufdfed animal is singing it.

And that's good enough for me!!!

Each child preferred a different song (except #4 ... he has kinda claimed the same one as #1)
#1 ... You Are My Sunshine
#2 ... John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt (his name is Jacob ... and it *would* put him to sleep)
#3 ... My Favourite Things (from Sound of Music)
#4 ... same as #1

They all like ALL music now ... but those were the sure fire, put'em to sleep songs.

My kiddoes loved certain videotapes (before DVDs) of active Christian songs (animated or live-action). I'd learn those (just by hearing them over and over as the tapes were watched often), and I'd sing those as well as hymns and sweet-sounding secular songs. I made up my own, too. (My kids are both way taller than me now. Now, my son carries me!)

And just how many of us sang
"I love you forever, I like you for always, As long as I'm living, my baby you'll be" (I love Robert Munsch!)

Ah, I guess my hubby is the bad one of the group. He sings sea shanties. They are mostly clean, though the latest one is about a guy hooking up with a "lady of the night". I told dH he's gonna have to cut that one out as Nathan gets older.

Besides certain hymns, I sang some John Denver, mostly because I heard it so much growing up. My dad loves John Denver.

I sang a lot of the Peter, Paul, and Mommy songs to my babies, until they were quite old. I sang the same to my grandchildren. And there were many others -- the little songs learned in Sunday school, songs I had written for them, etc.

I never sang the lyrics to Rock-A-Bye-Baby to them, though -- I really disliked its lyrics and those of some other songs.

My lyrics for Rock-A-Bye-Baby
Rock-A-Bye-Baby in the tree top
When the wind blows, the cradle will rock
When the bough breaks, the cradle will fall
But I will catch baby, cradle and all.

Oh, I'm a singin' mom and grandma. The children and grandchildren think I have a song for every phrase and every situation!

I sing absolute drivel and nonsense, often not even with many actual words. Lots of "I love you" thrown in.

Sometimes I do expanding saga story songs... like the one about the lioness (baby) who meets the (stuffed) bunny with a soother tied to it's neck, which the bunny thinks the lioness might want to try...

Usually my tunes come from somewhere, and I often wonder if it's sacrilegious to make up nonsense lullabies to the tunes of hymns. Then I remember that a lot of hymns were made from the tunes of common songs in the first place, and I don't feel so bad.

I would sing the hymn "I Remember Calvary" to Akeelah and put her name in it.

"Jesus shall lead Akeelah, night and day. Jesus shall lead Akeelah, all the way. He is the truest friend to Akeelah. For we remember Calvary."

I would also sing a reggae song called "Rock Away" by Beres Hammond. I don't know why, but whenever I would play or sing the song, she would completely calm down.

Dh would also sing some pretty hard dancehall reggae music and she would quiet right down

When my kids were little enough to be rocked, those are two I liked to sing to them. I also loved to sing Praise the Lord (the one by the Imperials), In the Garden and Because He Lives.

I also sang some secular stuff like My Favorite Things, Climb Every Mountain, South of the Border, Danke Schoen, Barbara Ann and Just the Way You Are Tonight.

Yeah, that's what I get for making stuff up myself -- I can't remember it that well. Maybe it will come back to me once my younger baby hits that 'lioness' stage.

Oh, me! I love that song!

Sideways--I have the Alphabet sea chanty in my collection somewhere. The chorus is something like "give sailor's their grog and there's nothing go wrong". The only reason I don't sing it much is because I always flub the tune and meter a little.

I forgot, one of the genre's of music I love to sing is appalachian and bluegrass spirituals, like Bright Morning Stars Arising and Down in the River to Pray. I wish I knew more of them. What I really want is a Southern Harmony hymn book to sing from, but they are out of print and too expensive.

to put him to sleep -
i would sing the 'lullaby' tune (Brahm's lullaby) , but i would sing the ABCs as the lyrics. Over and over and over. If I sang it thru and ended on W, then I would start again from the beginning with X.

The ABCs are out-of-sync with the 'lullaby,' so it kept it interesting for me.

Oh, I forgot the alphabet song. But we didn't sing the sesame street version. We sang (to a different tune):

A B C D E F G, Jesus died for you and me
H I J K L M N, Jesus died for sinful men, Amen!
O P Q R S T U, I believe God's word is true
V and W, God has promised you
X Y Z, A home eternally!

I sing this to my son - to the tune of Rock a by baby. He sits on my lap facing me, snuggles in and I rock him.

Rock a bye (child's name) time for a sleep
Rock a bye (child's name) time for a sleep
Mummy is holding you, holding you tight (or you could insert Jesus)
You will sleep quiety all through the night.

dh sings Jesus Bids us Shine iwth them. They both love that one

Jesus bids us shine,
With a pure, clear light,
Like a little candle,
Burning in the night
In this world of darkness,
So let us shine--
You in your small corner,
And I in mine.
Jesus bids us shine,
First of all for Him;
Well He sees and knows it,
If our light growss dim;
He looks down from heaven,
To see us shine--
You in your small corner,
And I in mine.
Jesus bids us shine,
Then, for all around
Many kinds of darkness
In this world abound -
Sin, and want, and sorrow;
So we must shine,
You in your small corner,
And I in mine.

For Grace her two favs were "Can't take my eyes off you" and that song, is it called "You are so beautiful to me"? But I would sing anything that I had in my head, I sing Sound of Music songs alot, they always make me feel better

For Nathaniel I would sing "Can't take my eys off you" and "Jesus Loves me" both would send him to lullaby land. He also loves the song from Hans Christian Anderson about the Ugly Duckling
