This may seem to be a silly question, but I'll ask anyway. [:)]
For those of you who rock and sing to your babies, what songs do you sing?
I'm having some issues with knowing the lyrics to anything besides Twinkle Twinkle and Rock a Bye Baby. [&:]

Sometimes its not the lyrics that matter. It is the tone of voice. I make up words sometimes. We dance and sing all the time. My 2yo knows the words to alot of songs.

HenriettasCat -> RE: singing to your children (6/21/2008 2:07:55 PM)

Oh yes, sometimes when we are in the car I'll sing 'you are my sunshine' but insert their name instead of Sunshine. I also do a 'Wheels on the bus' but instead of say, ' wipers on the bus' I will insert a family member name and say something that they like to do - or something silly to make them laugh. For example, 'Sammy on the bus says 'I've forgotten my lunchbox' - because 'Sammy' is my child who always forgets his lunch in the morning - for some reason they get a real kick out of this. Another child has a way of sneezing and not having a tissue [:'(] so "pass the tissue's" is another variation which is bound to get a laugh and also puts some humour into an ongoing issue we are having with that sibling.

kb4good -> RE: singing to your children (6/21/2008 2:14:10 PM)

I still sing to my children and they are 14 (son) and 16 (daughter). In fact, recently, my daughter came home from school and something inside (like I didn't know who it was) told me to sing this song to her:
Beautiful one I love, Beautiful one I adore, Beautiful one I love, my sweet girl. (ok, I changed the last part of the song to fit the need).

She broke down in tears. She had a rough day and was feeling bad about herself and this song let her open up and share.

Don't stop singing to your children. It's one of my ways of showing my love to them.

Roberta_ -> RE: singing to your children (6/21/2008 9:18:53 PM)

I used to sing to my children, but then I realized that children shouldn't be subjected to torture like that. [;)]
The Lord said to make a joyful noise, He didn't say that it had to be in a particular key. [;)]
In spite of me, my children wound up loving music and there is nothing wrong with their hearing. [;)]

Stronger2day -> RE: singing to your children (6/21/2008 9:45:09 PM)

I have not yet been blessed with the little kiddies, but I sing to my puppies, "I'm on the battlefield for my Lord....". This hymn does wonders when I am down or scared of the dark!![:)]

We sing anything and everything. From "Itsy-Bitsy Spider" to "The Old Rugged Cross" to "If You're Happy and You Know It" to "You Never Let Go" (my 3 year old's current favorite song[:)]).

We have praise/worship music on very often in our house. The kids view especially our kitchen and our van as our places to sing together to God. LOVE IT![:D]

McGuinessMagee -> RE: singing to your children (6/22/2008 6:41:07 AM)

Our kids were rocked to sleep to 'Scarborough Fair' and 'Moreton Bay'.

Hubby and I wrote a song...

The Baby Song

It's personalized. We wrote it for our son.

Hope that helps! [:)]

Hismusicgal -> RE: singing to your children (6/22/2008 5:25:02 PM)

The weird thing is that no song would put my kids to sleep. But I tried. Maybe because even from an early age they wanted to sing along they are now 12yo and both love music and singing.
My daughter was told at the age of 7 at an audition she had the best voice of all who tried out but since the lead was to be 10 or 11 she didn't get the part after the audition was over they told me they wanted kids at least 10 to play any of the parts. Oh well live and learn.

bzirk -> RE: singing to your children (6/22/2008 9:00:34 PM)

I still sing to my kids but mostly on road trips. [&:]

Covaan_Meshuga -> RE: singing to your children (6/22/2008 9:07:09 PM)

Hey! We used to sing on road trips! We did it when I was little, and we did it when I had my own children. I learned to sing harmony as a child on a road trip, and when my children were little, I made and printed our "camper song books," one for each of us. I traveled a lot with the children, and we sang all the way. They, also, learned to harmonize while on road trips, and both are also singers today.

Stronger2day -> RE: singing to your children (6/23/2008 7:08:26 PM)

I also sing that one song, "In the jungle, the quiet jungle the lion sleeps tonight...a whim o whe.....". Do you know the title? My puppy looks like a lion- hence the song.

Karaboo2 -> RE: singing to your children (6/23/2008 7:51:14 PM)

It is called "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" (dontcha love when the obvious escapes your memory ... I call that a Mommy Moment)

AHHHH! [:D] Wow, and since I'm not a 'real' mommy, just a wanna-be one, I have no excuse!!

TheSingingNurse -> RE: singing to your children (7/6/2008 12:14:40 AM)

I liked singing songs with some movement to them like:

My God is so Big,(hands cupped and shout on the word "Big")
So strong and so mighty(raise one arm on"strong" then the other on "mighty", like a strong man)
There's nothing(make the umpire "your out" sign)
My God(point to God) can not do,(make the umpire "Your out" then Clap, Clap)
repeat 2x

The mountain are His(make moutains with hands)
The valleys are His( dip hands down like valleys)
The trees are His handy work too(hold your elbow with hand up and finger spread like a tree)

My God is so Big, so strong and so mighty there's nothing my God can not do.

I wrote and recorded a song recently called "Babies are Beatiful" It's cute and fun for naming body parts, I also went on the internet and put together a pictoral of babies, moms and children. The kids I work with love it. It has some hand motions as well. If you are interested in knowing the motions let me know and I will give you them. You can hear the song at www.TheSingingNurse.com Below are the words and the inspiration for the song. Enjoy!

8. Babies Are Beautiful
Dawn Ginese 11/22/06 Dedicated to my mama, Shirley Jean

Chorus: Babies are Beautiful, Babies are Beautiful
When they grow inside their mama’s tum
It’s a miracle I once was one
I am Beautiful, I am Beautiful
Mama’s love for me grew in her heart
Her love for me right from the start

1) They have two cheeks a growin’, two ears and a nose
They have two shoulders, two knees and ten toes
(Action) Clap, Clap, Clap, Clap

2) They have a forehead, they have a winkin’ eye
Nose dropper, chin chopper, just like yours and mine
(Action) Smack, Smack, Smack, Smack

Break: Babies are fragile, we have to, treat them gently
Babies are helpless, we have to treat them kind Chorus:

3) Their brain is growin’ smart, don’t forget that pumpin’ heart
Bop a doom, Bop a doom
Their hands will reach up high, reach up high to the sky
Their feet will march in time, just like yours and mine
(Action) Stomp, Stomp, Stomp, Stomp,

Break: God gave us babies and O Gee, we all were once one
God gave us babies we have to treat them kind Chorus:
(End) When they grow inside their mama’s tum,
It’s a miracle I once was one,
When they grow inside their mama’s tum, yeah
Inspiration
“Babies Are Beautiful” describes the nurturing relationship between mama and baby even “when they grow inside their mama’s tum.” The tune is a reminder to little children, and us older children as well, of how precious our lives really are and that “we all were once one”. I like to describe this song as my “Animal Crackers in My Soup” song, which was sung by Shirley Temple in the 50’s. My mother’s name was Shirley and she used some of these phrases as she spoke motherease to her grandbabies. I’m sure she probably said them to me as a baby. This song is in loving memory of my mama, Shirley Jean, and her love of babies.

Covaan_Meshuga -> RE: singing to your children (7/6/2008 2:48:38 AM)

Anyone know the song that contains the words:
Wonderful baby
I'll laugh while you grow
If I have a secret
You'll be first to know

??

Yetto1997 -> RE: singing to your children (7/15/2008 10:48:47 AM)

I agree that the lyrics don't always matter, but the tone. Sometimes I just revert back to humming when I can't remember the words. My absolute favorite that always calms my son is Somewhere over the rainbow, but the Israel Kamakawiwo'ole version with the ukulele. It's so soothing! You are my sunshine and Amazing Grace were always a hit, Time in a Bottle, and Etta James' At Last. Pretty much anything that I have in my head at the moment will probably be pouring out of my mouth! [:)]

crankius -> RE: singing to your children (7/15/2008 11:11:06 AM)

This is one of my favorites that I still sing to my daughter:

Goodnight Sweetheart, well it's time to go
Goodnight Sweetheart, well it's time to go
I hate to leave you, but I really must say
Goodnight, Sweetheart, goodnight.

My favorite is when dad will say he is going to sing them a goodnight song, and he will sing falsetto and pretend to be me. [8|] Doesn't really help them go to sleep too much--puts them into hysterics.

shadowspring -> RE: singing to your children (7/15/2008 5:03:15 PM)

I love reading about all these creative songs!

I made up each child their own song. Just a little chorus, nothing like a real musician/songwriter could come up with.

The first one, "Let's rocky..." which is what my dd would say when she was tired, taking my hand and leading me to the rocking chair. [:)]

The other one I plagiarized heavily from a children's tape about manatees- Mimi the Manatee, it's called. My son's name has the same exact number of letters as the work "manatee", so I replaced them and reworked the rest of the words to make sense with his name rather than "manatee".[&:]

Ah, those were the days....

This is pretty much how I function. BTW, I love the song choice -- some of my favorites. I have a couple of IZ CDs, and I've got the Etta James album. Good stuff.
