I agree with Mrs. X and Solo. However, my elderly mother is scared to death that if anything socialized goes through that they will take her private insurance away. Even though she is 76 and Medicare is primary now, she's really truly convinced that any program would take away her secondary insurance. I keep trying to tell her that's not true but she listens to the propaganda. The "right" certainly does more than its fair share of "fear mongering". However, McCain DID say to the AARP that he recognizes that some level of universal insurance is going to have to be on the table. So, both candidates acknowledge it's pretty much a necessity on some level. It just is a matter of time and working out a plan. Hopefully whomever gets elected will be bipartisan enough to work out something that will truly be good for people and not just legislation with "no teeth" that they are so famous for passing (think Family Leave Act).

And employers can put all sorts of exceptions on it, like you have to be with them a certain amount of time and all that kind of stuff. It does, however, require them to give you time off and keep your job open, which is not totally useless for people who can afford unpaid time off. But I think for the majority of middle income Americans (who make less than $100K a year, say) unpaid time off is not a viable option. I had a friend who had a very high risk pregnancy and was sick for nearly a month early in her term. Her company wouldn't let her take FMA leave because she had only been with them for 11 months and instead fired her because her work fell behind while she was sick. So there she was, pregnant and no job. Solo, yer just so cute!

I'm not sure how she did it, but she was able to go back despite the fact that she was out for literally months (plus she had to have a C-section and she doesn't heal well from those). I really think she was fortunate to have that opportunity. It's not like her ex-husband cared... he was too busy trying to get his sex change and dress up in woman's clothes. I remember when I was in school and got more ill all of a sudden; I had to leave mid-semester to have emergency surgery, BUT I was registered and had paid for that next semester. I wasn't quitting altogether... but when you need surgery, you need surgery. I ended up losing that entire semester, but I lost my insurance as well-- BECAUSE I got sick. I was telling my medical ethics professor (who was one of America's leading surgeons, a doctor of physiology, a pastor and cellist) that it's odd to me to have insurance in case you get ill.... then because you get ill, insurance vanishes. [8\|] It's just GREAT! (And thanks for the compliment! [:)] I used to do fashion shows for small chains...now all I do is sit in science labs and fry my brain with formulas and such.)

We all need to learn how to be compassionate (if we are not already); Christians are sometimes the least compassionate. And, I believe that's part of the problem-- not just in the US either.

Oh, please! Stop with the victimization drama. It's like a constant dripping. If you go to work every day, work hard, are honest, don't steal from the company and, most of all, don't view your employer as anyone who owes you anything more than the opportunity they risked their capital and livelyhood to create and entrust to you, you'll be a valued employee. You'll be entrusted with more responsibility, more benefits and will be more capable of providing for all your family's needs. You'll be a success, because there aren't enough people like this. If you view your employer as someone who owes you your job, your health care, your sick leave, maternity leave, stress leave, hang-nail leave, or whatever, you'll see your employer as cruel and heartless, you'll see yourself as a victim, and you'll see others as lacking compassion when they don't feel sorry for you because your attitude cost you your job. This also applies to your view of government. And before you accuse me of lacking compassion, look in the mirror and see if there's a log in your own eye that has envy, covetousness, ingratitude and self-pity carved into it.

Yup, as long as you don't get too sick for too long or until they decide they no longer need your job. Then they'll cut you without notice or a word. BTW, I have never, ever been fired or laid off. But I sure have seen a lot of it and I've seen how it's done and it ain't pretty, and it isn't ALWAYS the employee's fault. In fact, if often ISN"T THE EMPLOYEE'S fault.
