ORIGINAL: lpt Were you in favor of Saddam's rewarding the families of "Palestinian" suicide bombers in Israel? We did the same thing with the Mujahadeen in Afghanistan when they attacked the Soviets. We have also funded various forms of insurgencies and "terrorism" in Latin America as well as Africa and Asia. quote:
Were you happy that he sent them money every time a family member blew themselves up, killing numerous Israelis? Or are things better off (for Israelis, at least) now that he's gone? In general, things have boded worse for the Israelis as a result of the Iraq war. The invasion, which inflamed Muslim anger throughout the world, certainly had an effect on the Palestinian elections which put Hamas in charge, and may have also led to problems with Hezbollah. Additionally, the Iraq invasion signalled to Iran, Syria, and other Middle Eastern regimes that if the US or Israel thinks you might be developing nuclear weapons, you might as well go ahead and develop them anyways. Terrorism seems to be on the rise throughout the middle east, and much of the anger seems to be directed at Israel, the US, and Britain. But the real question here is whether applying human rights to detainees and establishing some sort of legal oversight of the whole system bodes better for Israel and the US or not. And I think that when certain bad apples get the impression there isn't much oversight, certain pictures get created, and those pictures tend to turn into a pass for radical Muslims to engage in terrorism while getting enough moderates to maybe turn a bit of a blind eye to it. This results in attacks on Israel and the US.
