Cash whenever possible. I find I will spend less and think more about whether or not I really need the item if I'm spending my cash.

I agree!

As Dave Ramsey says, it hurts when you spend cash as you feel the pinch of parting with your cash instead. From personal experience, I believe it!

BTW, I do not want to derail my own thread, but how is it quicker to pay for purchases with a debit card? I have seen a commercial within the past few months that made it look like a bad thing if you actually paid cash instead of debit! Truth be told though, not only does it take longer for a debit transcation to process, but it does cost the merhant more also.

When I was cashiering, I found that it was much faster for people to pay with cash than it was debit.

I spend just as much with cash as I do with debit. But I use a software program to do "virtual envelopes" and keep a budget.

Debit cards are quicker in certain places than cash because the receipt prints almost instantly. Esp at McDonalds or in the self checkout lines at the grocery store.

Some people hold up the line counting up a bunch of singles to pay but then those are the same people that don't have their checkbook ready, can't find their id, etc.

And then there are some people who don't have their debit/credit cards ready at the time of check out and can't find their ID (even when they've written something along the lines of "CID" on the backs of their cards.) Then there are the people who can't figure out how to swipe their cards or where to sign on the receipt. [:D]

Stores actually ask for ID? This is one of the reasons why I do not use a debit card at all. (well most of the time anyway.)

Miss Giggles -> RE: How Do You Usually Pay For Purchases? (7/12/2008 9:44:12 PM)

I had to help someone fill out a check before. [&:].

I swiped the card backwards once or twice. LOL

Yes a lot of stores check the id on credit/debit cards.

Not around here I have not seen it at all. In fact I do not think that they even ask for ID for a credit card anymore either! [sm=icon_smile_roll.gif]

A lot of customers just hand the check to the cashier and let her run it through the machine so that all they have to do is sign it.

They're supposed to, especially if it says to on the back on the card.

Miss Giggles -> RE: How Do You Usually Pay For Purchases? (7/12/2008 9:49:54 PM)

Most of the stores do that here with the checks but few people know about it and some won't let the register fill it out. (I've cashiered off and on)

You don't have to sign if its under 25.00 at most places.

I don't like using cash because I have a hard time accounting for it. On the debit card or credit card, I at least get a statement (or online) showing me how much I spent. With cash, I have to remember or write it down (which I don't do), and I often forget where and how much I spent.

christsstar -> RE: How Do You Usually Pay For Purchases? (7/14/2008 10:40:07 AM)

stores will ask for ID if the cashier actually swipes it and you're not processing it as a debit, but rather credit (PIN vs. signing).

I am nervous about using my debit card as a debit card because of stories of stolen identity that way. I much prefer to sign for my purchases. Then again, self check-outs don't have any sort of monitoring on who's using the credit card. I've been tempted to sign it as, "This card is stolen," to see if anyone catches it. But if they did, I don't want to deal with explaining it.

They do not ask me up here at all, and I have used my credit card a lot!

Yes, that is what worries me about using a debit card also.

at our store, we have to take an ID with checks, even if they wrote their DL# on the check. Its a hassle for everyone.

Roberta_ -> RE: How Do You Usually Pay For Purchases? (7/21/2008 11:41:13 AM)

See, I don't understand why showing an ID is a hassle. I've only found it to be a hassle if the customer fights it or doesn't have it on them.

_MavericK_ -> RE: How Do You Usually Pay For Purchases? (7/21/2008 11:46:55 AM)

where I live, they argue. They ALWAYS argue. Prolly cuz half of them are on probation.

Roberta_ -> RE: How Do You Usually Pay For Purchases? (7/21/2008 11:54:58 AM)

Before I worked at Wal[:'(]Mart, I thought that at least 90% of the customers argued about it. After working there, I realized that it's pretty even divided between two groups.
Those who have their ID out and ready
and those who don't have an ID, are fumbling for their ID or refuse to show it.
I think we notice the second group more because they draw more attention to themselves- accidentally or intentionally.
