Y'know, this whole thread is begging the question. Is America something to be proud of? Why? Strider33 brings up a good point too. What's pride? What kind of pride can one reasonably have in America? One could possibly be grateful for America, in the same way one could be grateful for the way in which one was raised, and note that it's a process worthy attempted repetition. But pride? I dunno about that. quote:
People can debate in the minds the question of whether or not America is something to be proud of. But I would be satisfied if we got to the point that there would not be so many people who think America is something to be ashamed of either. Can't we just think of America is being a normal, regular country, and as such, deserves the same respect as any other country in the world? If America was just considered a normal country, then can't we accept the notion that just like any other country in the world, America deserves to have its own borders, language, and culture? Are there any America haters out there who have the courage to answers these BASIC questions I am putting forth? I'm not an America hater, but I can try. Does anyone seriously think that America is a normal, regular country? That seems like an absurd belief to hold. There are billions of people in the world, each with his own distinctions. It's difficult to find a normal, regular person, so long as one cares to examine the individual closely. There are far fewer countries than people, and each one is far more diverse than any individual person, as a country is composed of millions (or so) of individuals, with a myriad of cultures and policies contained within. What's a normal, regular country? Are we talking average? I think we should maybe be talking about an African country if that's the case. As to whether a country deserves anything... do countries deserve anything? How about North Korea or Burma or Zimbabwe?

And if I'm wrong and this is the norm then the whole world is a lot worse off than I originally thought. Deserves respect? No. Respect is earned, not given just because some people think it should be. Really, what is praiseworthy about America that we should all be reverent? Deserves borders, language and culture? No. I really don't think that any thing can deserve something, but that's just my opinion. What has it done to deserve any of those things mentioned? Nothing.

Rami: You are wrong, and the world is much worse off than you thought. But the good news is that there is a better day coming, and it is a day that all of creation is waiting for with great anticipation. Let us put our hope in that day, rather than the world as it is today. quote:

In how many nations could a mixed-race American citizen with the "unlikely" name of Barack Hussein Obama rise from political obscurity and defeat both the bureaucracy of the Democratic Party (Clinton supporters) and the Republican Party (McCain/Palin supporters) to become the next President of the United States - all within a time span of less than 2 years.

I didn't know the election had been decided yet.

Of course America is something to be proud of. We are the oldest continuos democratic republic in the world. We were one of the first, and continue to be one of the primary governments who govern according to the will of the governed. We have perhaps to the greatest extent maximized certain freedoms, most especially those of press, speech and the freedom to believe and practice our beliefs as we see fit. There is no greater freedom of religion in the world. We trust our people to own guns, start businesses, run their own affairs, seek education, all generally free of compulsion by a select few. We have generated the greatest wealth in the world, a wealth that resides in the communities of hundreds of thousands of different towns and cities and households, not in the strongholds of a few; and people can truly prosper as a result of their labor and ideas. We have created things that have changed the world, and which continue to bless the world. We are the most personally charitable people in the world, and despite the fact that we could easily dominate any number of countries and plunder their wealth, we generally restrict the use of our power in wa y no other super power has in history. There is no one who can’t succeed here, as witnessed by the success of the children of every sort of race, color, nationalality, and gender. My father grew up on a Mississippi mud farm, had a fifth grade education, and didn't own a house until his forties. I went to college, I have succeeded in my line of work, and I had bought and sold three houses by my forties. We are certainly by no means perfect, as no country is, but I would say it is hard to imagine a world where this country hadn't existed, or does not exist now - there is much to be proud of as an American.

Now, let's not get ahead of ourselves here. No one has been elected yet. As amazing as the possibility is that he could achieve a victory, I myself am not looking forward to the possibility of an Obama presidency any way you cut it. I disagree with him on the majority of the issues, and frankly, many of his stances are of great concern to me. quote:
