Do you believe God is easily offended? Why or why not?

Not as we understand (or misunderstand) offense.

Our LONGSUFFERING God bears with our weaknesses. He is like Noah's sons, covering our shame. True, He can't look upon sin but in love He does FOR US what we cannot do for ourselves.


(Now I'm sure others will quote scriptures that speak of God being offended. I know they are there. But if we look beyond the text to our Almighty God and answer the question from our knowing of Him. we look at the whole of scripture and not individual verses that can prove almost any point we want to prove.)

When God sees what we have made of the world that He gave us, when He sees how we behave towards each other, when He sees how we disobey His commandments and turn our backs on Him mockingly - I doubt that He is too happy.

Is God easily offended? Sin offends Him, and we sin very easily, but does that mean that God is just sitting around up in heaven waiting for us to sin so He can smack us around?


Verses that talk of God as being longsuffering...which would mean that He is patient with us, even though we offend Him He is still willing to forgive us and restore us to fellowship with Him.

For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life. (Romans 5:10)

Even though we have offended God, He has made provision for us to be reconciled.

It is not as easy as it seems for although all the world sins and lives in sin we do not have a relationship that is defined in law but rather in blood. Hence although a father may be concerned by a sons rebellion, he is forever seeking his restoration. In fact, our fathers if they are ever to show they love us, must disaplin us.

Having said that, I sometimes wonder if some of our worship serices actually provoke God.

The answer to this question is depending on How you see GOD. I see God as our parent, and we as his children. As such I believe God is offended when one of his children are offended, persecuted, hated, killed ect. I would say that God is hurt when we hurt ourselves and when we reject him as in greived,, do not grieve the Holy Spirit. I know that my children greive me ,, but I would give my life for them,, as has Jesus.

Matthew 7:11 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him?

Which is a good point. All sin is offensive to God, because it is utterly unlike him. When we read:

The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. -2Pe 3:9

And account [that] the longsuffering of our Lord [is] salvation; even as our beloved brother Paul also according to the wisdom given unto him hath written unto you. -2Pe 3:15

We infer that he actually is made to suffer by transgressions all the time. But, his suffering equates to salvation for us. Does he quickly react to offenses, in most cases he does not.

Genesis says... let us make man in our image.

Let us not underestimate the depth of God's ability to be jealous, offended, angered, and so on.

In the same respect. He has great mercy and much love.

I imagine that at any moment, God/Jesus is used as a swear word thousands and possibly millions of times.

Here are the people where scripture declares... "for God so loved the WORLD" and His name is not called on for help or salvation but rather to emphasize a point.

I am offended just thinking about it.

Maybe not offended, but also very involved in our lives, the actions of which can be negative or positive depending on our choices.

I'm not sure this question falls into simple yes or no categories. On the one hand, we sin and this is fatal to our relationship with God until we seek his redemption. On the other, he has demonstrated great patience with us and continues to love us in our sinful state. So in a sense, the answer is both yes AND no. To a degree, the answer depends on what me think when we hear the word "offend" and which connotation we apply in this context.

This was the point I was making as well. Our cultural (?) understanding of the word 'offended' has been horribly skewed---as have many things. And our tendency is to put everything into the context of ME. That is the problem of the flesh. The world revolves around ME. So if we regard 'offense' or 'offended' from our personal perspective, our understanding will be very different from what I believe God is saying regarding offense (in its various contexts).

Life in Christ is about getting beyond ME. I am my biggest problem. Praise the Lord He is drawn to sinners and takes my sin and wants to teach me. And that includes learning what 'offense' is from His perspective---and giving up mine.[:)]

Ask Zacharias, John's father... he simply doubted God and was struck dumb during Elizabeth's whole pregnancy. I don't know about everything but I can see that unbelief is a very serious matter to God and seem's to greatly offend Him.

I believe as it has been told in the Bible, that we are all descendants of a righteous man named Noah. I also believe in the begining, God was there, giving a begining to everything, including human beings, man and woman. I believe that at one time, God flooded the entire earth, being sorry he'd created mankind. The NLT of the Bible states that what He saw of His creation broke his heart. (Genesis 6:6). Yet Noah found favor with God (v. 8). God is capable of that level of tolerance of what we are told was wickedness- where every thought and imagination was consistently and totally evil.

Where am I taking this? How can anyone answer your question? It's not something we will know- what kind of measurement device can be applied to who God is? It doesn't matter what I believe about your question. I don't see that it can be answered.

I'm not through believing yet, however, because if you want to place this in the present day, and ask can God be easily offended, think about this. God loved the world so much He gave His only Son Jesus to be the complete sacrifice for the sins of all creation. So when He looks on His creation today, His wrath, any desire to give us another flood, is gone. He's met the obligations and punishments for all humankind once in place with His commandments. Offended, hurt, joyful, eagerly anticipating sharing heaven with His followers- however He's doing, He is a loving creator. He is loving enough to us to assure us we are living in His timetable, and that here's how things are going to happen as this time as we know it ends and eternity begins for everyone.

Hear the creation ask, "I'm sorry, did I just offend you, God?"
Hear Creator God reply, "I love you."
What does creation do after that?

Sorry to be persnickety, but this is a theosophy question that I gotta reframe...

The idea of God being "easily offended" bears with it the connotation that his emotions are purely reactionary. If that is the case, we have total power over God's mood and, by extension, His rationality and activity. God's emotions are not reactionary... how do I know? Because He already knows everything that IS going to happen. I don't quite know how to phrase it exactly, but it is like God chooses when, where, and why to manifest His various emotional frame. If you read the Old Testament, situation (A) happens and God's emotion (B) occurs. The Bible doesn't specifically say that (B) happens BECAUSE (A) happened, but merely that they happened in sequence. Being reactionally offended implies that God is surprised by our sins... which is anything but the truth. As Psalm 103 says, "He remembers our frame". It is because we cannot shock Him or surprise Him that makes His emotional character and mannerisms so dynamically and powerfully different from our own.

Now consider this... God knows our frame, and knows everything that we are going to do and say that is "sin"... and yet God still loves us passionately. That is why His emotions are such an enigma.

To summarize, I think God doesn't "have" emotions but rather "chooses" His emotions appropriate for the situation. To answer the actual question posed by the OP, God is not easily offended, because only He can choose when He is offended. Personally, I don't want to convince Him that He should be offended.
