i dont have anything against them. if you want one, sure ok. but i dont think its any big deal if you dont have one, just because its only symbolic and the commitment you make to God to stay pure is bigger than anything a ring could give you.

i prolly wont ever get one because they are ridiculously expensive.

I totally agree.

I do too!! If these rings are supposed to be such a valuable reminder to stay pure, why are the people selling them pricing them so high?? They make a killing, but shouldn't this reminder be readily available to kids with less money, too?!? It's kind of sad, really.

wheres kon! hes flirting with me!

jesusfreak94 -> RE: purity rings (7/11/2008 11:14:58 PM)

but also rae, if the rings were like 5 dollars, i mean honestly, they wouldn't seem so valueable and worthy. i mean, they would just seem kinda cheep and worthless. good to have it, but you can get it anywhere and its just a cheep ring.

Yeah. I mean, God's opinion matters much more than a purity ring. If he says we should remain pure, then I'll remain pure. I'm not going to follow a purity ring. I'm going to follow God :) Wooo.

I've made mistakes in the past. But I know theres a lot of forgiveness that God can give me!

I think they've been cheapened more by the fact that all of young hollywood is wearing one, more than they could ever be cheapened by a price reduction!

Ronnizzle -> RE: purity rings (7/12/2008 1:54:33 PM)

ALL of young hollywood? the only ones i know of are the Jonas Brothers

rae_of_light -> RE: purity rings (7/12/2008 2:07:08 PM)

.... and Miley Cyrus. And Selena Gomez. And Demi Lovato. And.... *sigh* shall I go on?

DreadPirateRandy -> RE: purity rings (7/12/2008 2:10:25 PM)

That's five. That doesn't begin to define "all".

Ronnizzle -> RE: purity rings (7/12/2008 2:18:01 PM)

and just because some people in hollywood are wearing them, doesn't mean the symbol of purity is cheapened. it all depends on the person and how sincere they are in that commitment. i get that you don't need a purity ring/necklace/bracelet to stay pure, but it is not only a physical reminder, but a great witnessing tool. all of my friends who are staunch mormons have asked me why i wear the ring and what it means and countless other questions. it's given me an opportunity to share my beliefs that otherwise wouldn't exist.

Actually that's six. And there are a few more, but I don't really feel like listing the names. I know it was a dramatic overstatement, but whatever.

It's cheapened for me, Ronnie, maybe not for you, but it is for me. Please don't get all mad. I'm glad that you have a witnessing tool.

Ronnizzle -> RE: purity rings (7/12/2008 2:35:38 PM)

i'm not mad, and i'm sorry for coming across that way. just one more point...with celebrities wearing purity rings cheapening that symbol for you, is the cross also cheapened in your eyes? many people who don't believe in Jesus and what He did for us wear crosses around their necks and such, but to them it means nothing other than having a cool necklace to wear. what's the difference?

I have a purity ring. I really like it because not only is it a reminder to me, a lot of people at my school will ask questions about it so it opens up a conversation about God which is always good![:D]

Ditto. I wear my purity ring on my ring finger as a reminder to me and other people that I made a covenant with God not to mess around with anything until I get married. Like kyangel said, I also get a lot of questions about and so I try to explain to them what it means.
Since I got the ring I also never got asked to be anyone boyfriend, which is good because I'm not ready to date and eliminates a lot of the temptations which come with dating.

I don't think it's a necessity to staying pure, but will help in any case.

I agree with you, even though I have never had one myself. I am a married woman so I have betrothal and wedding rings on. I am not fully for or against them. For you guys, it is ok because you are not a woman. But I think for the young women wearing these it is more dangerous. Why? Because you're flaunting your virginity and I think it would make it easier for wicked men to want to rape a girl. That is my only concern.

Jessica

No, the cross is not cheapened to me, it's rather different, seeing as the cross is a symbol of what the Lord did for me. But I don't really wear cross jewelry too often.

and a guy wearing a purity ring couldn't get hurt how? they're just as vulnerable as girls are in that sense. wicked men don't always look for girls...i know that sounds gross, and it is, but it's the truth. i don't think it's more dangerous for a girl to be wearing a purity ring than it is for a guy. there are plenty of sick and twisted people out there wanting to take advantage of anyone, male or female. the benefits of wearing a purity ring definitely out number the disadvantages or risks that you're implying exist.
