Are there any foods that you wouldn't eat as a child that you eat now?

StephK -> RE: Are there any foods that you wouldn't eat as a child that you eat now? (6/27/2008 12:35:46 PM)

Vegetables. I eat just about all of them now. I refused to eat any as a child. I still gag thinking about eating beets though. [:'(]

amybreit -> RE: Are there any foods that you wouldn't eat as a child that you eat now? (6/27/2008 12:47:53 PM)

That would be a long list, but tomato soup is the first thing that comes to mind.

lexie -> RE: Are there any foods that you wouldn't eat as a child that you eat now? (6/27/2008 1:43:49 PM)

My mom can't believe that I feed my daughter beans (red beans, black beans) because I used to gag at the thought of eating it as a child. I still don't like them just on their own or in a bean salad, but I love rice and peas (the peas are actually kidney beans) and I love Mexican food with black beans in it!

In my late teens and throughout university I didn't eat red meat. I have worked it back into my diet, but it is a rare occurence (once a month for dinners, and the occasional burger).

wfisaac -> RE: Are there any foods that you wouldn't eat as a child that you eat now? (6/27/2008 8:17:04 PM)

spinach would probably be the main one. Before I didn't want anything to do with it. Now I love it...except for the canned stuff. That still has the power to turn my nose. But fresh spinach is wonderful.

Another thing I use to hate as a kid was salsa but now I eat it alot. And if I can't find something good to put it on I like to just eat it. And I much prefer the fresh stuff but if I'm desperate I'll settle for the jar stuff.

Miss Giggles -> RE: Are there any foods that you wouldn't eat as a child that you eat now? (6/27/2008 9:39:16 PM)

cole slaw

I still don't like veggies!

I am sure there are a lot more :)

cheeky_monkey -> RE: Are there any foods that you wouldn't eat as a child that you eat now? (6/27/2008 10:20:19 PM)

Green peppers and onions.

APZR -> RE: Are there any foods that you wouldn't eat as a child that you eat now? (6/27/2008 11:15:30 PM)

There's plenty of them... cesar salad, pepper and onions, ANYTHING hot like jalapenos for a few.

But for the reverse, things I ate as a kid that I no longer eat... hot dogs. I like them, but they don't like me. I don't really care for candy anymore, just don't like things too sugary. I also no longer split and share a doggy biscuit with my four legged buddy.

3cappuccinosmom -> RE: Are there any foods that you wouldn't eat as a child that you eat now? (6/28/2008 6:47:28 AM)

There's a long list of things I wouldn't eat as a kid. Fish, spinach, eggplant, peppers, onions, green beans, carrots, etc. I did the whole gag routine. Now I'm getting payback from my own kids. My 3 yo did that last night and ended up not just gagging but managing to bring up all the food he'd eaten (and he only started gagging *after* he'd happily eaten most of his meal but then discovered there was applesauce for dessert, and he didn't want to wait until he'd finished [8|])

As an adult I've learned to overcome the gag reflex and will eat almost anything that's offered to me. I love peppers and onions now, love veggies, don't mind eggplant or spinach. But while I can eat fish, I still don't like it at all, and only eat it if social etiquitte requires it. Thus far I've managed to avoid shrimp and shellfish altogether, because just the smell of them makes me queasy. [&:]

karlie -> RE: Are there any foods that you wouldn't eat as a child that you eat now? (6/28/2008 11:30:18 AM)

I have an opposite list. Lots of things I ate as a child that I won't touch now as an adult, not even for the sake of etiquette. That's quite a long list.

The only two things I can remember hating as a child that I love now are bean sprouts(I love them on salads and veggie sandwiches), and spinach, but only it it's baby spinach and raw in salads. I still won't eat it cooked.

csl7037 -> RE: Are there any foods that you wouldn't eat as a child that you eat now? (6/28/2008 12:42:09 PM)

I wouldn't touch anything green as a child. Now I'll eat green beans only because it's the only vegetable dh will eat (he's pickier than me) and sometimes it's just too much effort to fix something different. I'll eat spinach now but only raw (salad). And I literally taught myself to like broccoli. When I was on weight watchers, I GAVE myself an extra point every time I ate broccoli - I made it worth negative points. It worked. I eat it almost every day now.

car2ner -> RE: Are there any foods that you wouldn't eat as a child that you eat now? (6/30/2008 7:22:02 AM)

I used to hate lima beans. I did not like the texture. But being a pre-school teacher and feeding the class family style, I had the rule of trying two bites of everything. And if someone didn't like something, that is all I'd put on the plate for them. Two little pieces. Having to follow my own rules, since I ate with the children, I had to eat lima beans and found out that I liked them.

On the flip side, I have lost my fondness for candy. A bit of peppermint or black licorice is nice but hard candies don't hold the same appeal as they used to. Now chocolate, I have always loved it and still do but am finickier about which chocolates I'll eat.

Still trying to learn to like raw cheeze. Melt mine, please.

I wouldn't touch potatoes or chicken when I was a kid. Now I eat taters just about every day, and chicken a couple of times a week.

pumpkin -> RE: Are there any foods that you wouldn't eat as a child that you eat now? (6/30/2008 1:58:13 PM)

salad dressings... as in no ranch, no french, no vinagrette, nothing (when I would eat at my friends' house, their dad would call me the little rabbit because I liked my salad plain.)

cream cheese

sour cream

salsa

those are the only ones I can think of that I've changed my mind on. The other stuff I found gross as a child I still find gross today. (coconut for example)

Me too.

I wasn't picky as a child, I ate everything except ranch dressing, pickles, and eggplant.

Now I don't eat pickles, oatmeal, eggplant(except for in ONE dish), hotdogs, and a myriad of others.

bluestone -> RE: Are there any foods that you wouldn't eat as a child that you eat now? (6/30/2008 4:34:32 PM)

cheese -- didn't like it until I ate some from Wisconsin; now, I am allergic

parsnips -- didn't like them either until I tasted some my mother-in-law made
lima beans -- no stinkin' way!
collard greens -- no stinkin' way!
corn bread -- no stinkin' way!
chitterlings -- no stinkin' way!
salt pork -- no stinkin' way!
turnip greens -- no stinkin' way!
mustard greens -- no stinkin' way! unless they are raw and lightly mixed into a salad
any beans, after they have cooked all day -- no stinkin' way!
tamales -- no stinkin' way!
tamale pie -- no stinkin' way!

Haha! See the look on my face in the photo?
Thinking about this food, that's the look on my face now -- it just has lots of wrinkles now.

artemis -> RE: Are there any foods that you wouldn't eat as a child that you eat now? (7/2/2008 4:19:37 PM)

Pizza. I thought I hated it as a kid, but as it turns out, I just hated the nasty stuff my mom made and called "pizza." I also don't like pepperoni (still don't), so the few times I had pizza at school or a birthday party, it was always pepperoni and I didn't like it. I LOVE cheese pizza now, I just never had it as a kid.

I also wouldn't eat salad when I was a kid because I thought I hated it, but really, I just hate Ranch dressing. My parents never bought anything else, so I thought all salad tasted like Ranch dressing [:'(]

I always assumed I didn't like Chinese food because I never had it until I got married (my mom doesn't like Chinese, so she never made it). It's not my favorite, but I'll eat it now.

p31woman -> RE: Are there any foods that you wouldn't eat as a child that you eat now? (7/2/2008 4:40:29 PM)

Olives, green and black
Bell peppers
Peanut butter
Oatmeal
Popcorn
Cantaloupe

The one constant has been raw tomatoes. [:'(] Love 'em stewed and cooked in things-- spaghetti sauce, SALSA, Spanish rice, casseroles-- but have always detested the taste of raw ones. That pretty much goes for raw broccoli and cauliflower, too. [:'(]

OneOfHisJewels -> RE: Are there any foods that you wouldn't eat as a child that you eat now? (7/3/2008 5:00:06 AM)

Nope, hasn't changed for me. The only two things I didn't like as a kid were liver and mushrooms. And I still don't like either one, and I still like everything else. Liver I can eat politely if someone serves it, but mushrooms, noooo. They always made me gag, and they still do.

My mom on the other hand thinks a dish of liver and mushrooms together is a great delicacy.[:'(]

HenriettasCat -> RE: Are there any foods that you wouldn't eat as a child that you eat now? (7/3/2008 7:46:32 AM)

I have always eaten just about anything. As a kid the only things I can remember not eating were

baked beans - unless they were on toast - then they were yum
cooked carrots - but I liked them raw
Grapefruit - still think its vile [:'(]
Ice cream - unless it was in a cone. (that was a texture thing to do with eating melted ice cream)
Went off garlic sausage after my friend and I found some wild garlic leaves and smelled them until we were sick - still not too keen (brings back memories).

Nowadays, apart from the grapefruit the only thing I won't eat (except under sufference) is chinese food, don't ask me why - I just really don't like it.

Auben -> RE: Are there any foods that you wouldn't eat as a child that you eat now? (7/4/2008 6:29:25 PM)

Lots of things.

I'm still picky but I've tried a lot more things (its easier to try things when you don't have to eat the whole thing); basic Chinese food, curry, rice, BROCCOLI!! (my favorite veggie now), salad greens, parmesan sauce, spaghetti squash, fresh peas and beans, other Asian food, cucumber, pesto, tomatoes, etc etc.

Resonance -> RE: Are there any foods that you wouldn't eat as a child that you eat now? (7/5/2008 3:46:33 PM)

Vegetable or Minestrone soup. It would make me yak. It wasn't until the past few years that I realized it wasn't vegetable soup on the whole that I didn't like, but rather the Campbell's brand, of which us kids grew up eating a fair bit of Campbell's. A visit to a restaurant where I asked for a side salad and got the side soup(minestrone) instead and ate it anyway - it was quite good - was what made me realize this.
