I saw them on what is now known as their "first" farewell tour, back in '82. Sat behind the stage but still had a great time.

Won't Get Fooled Again is a GREAT song...one of those songs that is anthemic in its power.

I saw the Who in Lexington in 1980 (or 81, can't remember) at Rupp Arena. It was one of the loudest concerts I've ever seen...but it was really really good.

By the way, if you're a fan of Won't Get Fooled Again" check out a youtube video that isolates John Entwhistle's bass work on that song. I'm sorry I don't know how to post the link, but you can find it easily enough by doing a youtube search.

Entwhistle was one of the most outstanding bassists ever, IMHO.

And he always looked bored while doing it. [:D] He stayed out of Pete's way on stage letting him run around like a crazyman. If I recall, he didn't get into the instrument smashing stuff. I think Keith Moon did it for him once but I might be mistaken.

You're exactly right. He just stood there and provided the foundation for the Who's great music. As Keith Moon did on drums, The Ox played his instrument like it was a lead instrument.

I read an interview with him once where he said he played bass with "full treble, and full volume." The treble thing was interesting...he said most bass players lose their presence because their instruments were too, well, bassy.

That's what I liked about the Rickenbacker basses they had some treble so you could hear Geddy Lee's and Chris Squire's handiwork as well! John was partial to the Alembric bass but had used Rickenbacker sometimes. I was saving up for one when life took me in a different direction. Perhaps one day I'll get me another bass to complement my son's guitar! [8|]

While I found it innteresting reading all your responses, I find myself asking, "Is it even possible to pick just one best Rock song?" I can't even remember every song that I would consider as being "up there", as far as what criteria I would use for determining which songs were good,better,best....my interests vary, can I pinpoint it to just ONE song?

Before going any further,I should issue a disclaimer of sorts, in that, while I enjoy listening to music, as well as seeing it performed "live", I have no talent to read or write music, nor do I play an instrument or sing.So I consider that to be somewhat of a handicap. The only thing I do play is air......air guitar, air keyboards, air drums,well....you get the idea.

I'm the kind of guy who enjoys sitting in a room that is acoustically pleasing to an audiophile, turning the lights down, and just "getting into" listening to the various sounds each instrument in making, in addition to a particular melody,or harmony, bass lines, chords, riffs, and good ol' finger picking.

So, to pick just ONE song that totally blows me away every time I hear it???? Ok, it would have to be Rush's "La Villa Strangiato", and a close second would be Edgar Winter Group's " Frankenstein".

Definitely one of my favorite instrumentals. Especially the Exit...Stage Left version.

I've threatened my husband with serious injury if he ever sings this song again. He used to bust out with it at least once a day. [:'(][:D]

While I can't hardly stand to hear that song anymore because it's been played to death, I can't help but remember that episode of the Simpsons where they sang it in church. Rev. Lovejoy announces it as " 'In The Garden of Eden' by I. Ron Butterfly". Then the 90 year old organist about kills herself trying to play the 17 minute version. Classic.

Yeah, that was really funny!

My wife was about ready to smack me too but the song in my head or ear worm (as they call it in Germany) was "Viva Las Vegas" by Elvis.
Here she comes! [sm=yummy.gif]

Yep, now that an ear worm alright! Last weekend on the Jerry Lewis telethon, they had a voice tranquilest and at the end they had an Elvis impersonator. He sang Viva Las Vegas and all these Vegas girls with Vegas style costumes game out too!

I would have mentioned Freebird if I wasn't so sick of hearing it. lol

Yeah, I'm the same way with Stairway To Heaven.

Man On The Silver Mountain by Rainbow is a great one too.
