Homeschool graduates do enter universities where they can (and do) succeed. They are also accepted into private colleges/universities...not just public.

What needs to be considered is what is best for your child and family-remembering to follow God's direction in your lives.

I am a firm believer that young children need to be reinforced in their Christian walk...by as many believers as possible.

I also feel that they should never be deliberately placed in situations where they need to answer questions that are against the truths of God's Word in order to receive a good grade in school.

There are many good public, private, and homeschools. Thankfully parents in the US (in most states) are still free to choose the best situation for their child and family.

Yes, I was quite surprised to read that they don't believe in either rewards or punishments, for example.

Also, that I've heard that parents are not allowed in the school to observe what the children are doing.


I went to a Montessori school prior to entering public school ... trust me, at my Montessori, bad behaviour was punished, and accomplishments were rewarded -- but the school was really so much fun (and educational at the same time) that it only took being punished once -- typically -- for a person to realize that it was FAR better to behave.

And parents were always welcome to drop in ... any time for any reason.

Now maybe that was particular to the school I attended (which is still in operation more than 25 years later), but it was wonderful ... and I strongly considered sending my children there as well ... but finances, while permitting me to stay home with the young'uns, wouldn't allow for them to attend.

Thank you Karaboo2 I have worked and love the Montessori way I can not think of any reason a Christian would not want to us it. I much go for it over most HS system way I have seen or knew of. But it is a wonderful way if it is done with the love and joy of a good teacher per say as any teacher should have, I believe the education our children get need lots of parent involvement and I love the public system where we were. Now is a good time if you are going to stay in that area to look listen to parents of children about the education system and then deide as a pre school teacher of 25 year I love to have a class of boy ! It kept me on my toes!! I have had 8 boy to 5 girls and loved for many years, Again love the MONTESSORI way . At least up to about 3or 4 grade!

I have girls and boys... in all kinds of schools. It is hard work sometimes, but you have to investigate each situation and decide based on what is best for THAT kid, THAT year. We have a couple kids where each year is pretty much fine, unless a bad apple teacher comes along... and we have a couple where each year is a brand new decision on what to do.
My youngest did montessori preschool, and we would have continued except for the cost... Plus both myself and our eldest is in college, so there is that cost.
our middle son... well he is your little boy who doesn't fit well into the classroom. I wish I had read John Holt prior to his schooling. We have finally, after a few years of disasters at ps. (and a few good years - k - 3rd - 4th) decided to try hs. (for 6th)
ds8 is staying at the ps, he has for 3rd grade the same teacher as his brother did, for a good year.
dd is a Sr. in High School... she toyed with the local charter school, but in the end decided to go with her academic focused friends, as opposed to the more "hippie" friends who chose the charter. She is doing classes at the University too. (We put her at a private school in Kinder after 2 weeks of getting in trouble in PS...back to PS in 5th grade)
dd(the elder) is a Sr. in College... she is a public school teachers dream. Very well behaved, did her homework, sat still, read a bunch. I would have had a blast hs her! She assigned herself research projects during the summer.[:D]
Sooo, sorry to be so long winded... but it is different for each kid, and it depends on the year, and family circumstances and finances and the weather. ok, maybe not the weather...[:)]

I think tons depends on the teacher and the class. My son started Kindergarten last year. His class only had 13 kids and his teacher was AWESOME - she was so upbeat and positive. She could work the schedule around the kids and if she could tell they were getting antsy they would move around with a new activity.

It will be interesting this year to see what happens. We've moved across country, he will now be attending a large public school, and will be in 1st grade which I've heard where the "real" work starts.

I say the same as JuliaHop, my daughter's college loves having homeschoolers, including her. The transition wasn't difficult. As parents, we educated our child to live in the world.

As far as gender goes, my understanding of the general thoughts and research on little boys and school was that as a group they are more physically active than girls and that in general they learn mathethmatics and spatial skills more easily and language skills less easily than girls. Also boys as a group are less likely to follow rules.

The comment about girls doing better in girls only schooling because boys answer more questions I heard a bit differently. The study when it was done was observing who answered more questions and why. The reason it concluded that girls do better in single sex education because boys were called on more often. The authors concluded that a considerable amount of gender bias was going on. I think that certain ages were also more vulnerable socially than others to the pressures of having the opposite sex around (meaning distractions from having the opposite sex around).

My daughter as an individual was a square peg in a round hole as far public and private school went. She was in school for kindergarten and the first half of 1st grade. It was problematic. First, she was not a compliant child in general although she generally behaved well at school. Of the common comments we got about our daughter from teachers and evaluators (we had her evaluated privately), two stuck the most. The first was that she didn't sit still. The second was that she was a very different thinker. Both of these were true at the time. The second is still true. Also she went into kindergarten knowing how to read and to add and subtract, etc. That meant she got bored and felt a lot of what was going on was pointless to her. So much of early school she already knew. Since her manual skills were behind by at least a year, that meant her writing and color was slow so that any reward she might have gotten by finishing up quickly was taken away. Her school classes were to big to give her any individual attention to address anything. So we homeschooled her.

The decision to homeschool came after a lot of consideration and prayer. I think and educational decision should be made on that basis, not particularly on studies and general opinion. I always recommend a decision be made by a child's parents from full knowledge of all the options and in prayer before God.

I have not read the whole thread but wanted to weigh in on my "little" (he's middle school now) boy in school. He started preschool at 4; a young 4. One month into school his little sister died and now we know but didn't at the time that he saw it happen. By Dec. we pulled him out because there were issues with the teacher blaming him for every issue in the class. A yr later we felt that he was not ready for kindergarten, so we put him into preschool basically holding him back a yr. He did great being the oldest rather than youngest in the class.

When it was time for Kindergarten the following yr we KNEW that he was not ready for a class of 22 kids; after months of praying we homeschooled him for 3 yrs. The summer before 2nd grade I felt that we were supposed to put him into school but my pride would not let me "fail" at homeschooling. We kept him home with horrible results: not academically but with my relationship with him. Daily one of us was in tears. In March, I finally said to DH this is not what God intended and I found a small private school for DS. He started the following day and stayed until this yr. Overall it was a great experience in the private school.

This yr he started 6th grade in a Public Charter school, this is the first week but he says he loves his school and has already made a friend. Something that he hasn't done quickly before.

I added my word there.

This is 100% right. We have come to realize that each of our children's education will be based on his/her needs and goals in life. While I talk to others about different options the decision is based on what DH and I feel God is leading us to do for each of our children. Some years that has had us with 3 kids in 3 schools but all with good results when it is God led.
