jesusfreak54848 -> Anyone else enjoy "cookie cutter" CCM? (6/28/2008 8:32:48 PM)

I must admit, my iPod is dominated by artists such as Casting Crowns, Jeremy Camp, the Newsboys, Chris Tomlin, etc....you get the picture. Bascially, the bands that dominate most Christian radio airwaves. It seems like most of the posters out there don't really like this type of music at all, so I'm here to ask...anyone else with me? [:D]

I listen to all those artists you mentioned plus a few others that some may put in that "cookie cutter" CCM category.

There are a few good bands left in modern CCM (Hillsong United, Casting Crowns, MercyMe, some David Crowder Band), but it seems that the overwhelming majority of the stuff that comes out of Christian radio nowadays is a bunch of whiney boys ripping off Coldplay with squishy, femanized lyrics that seem to paint Jesus as your cosmic girlfriend.

Agreed, I'd add Third Day to your list of good "CCM" artists, as well as Phil Keaggy, although he might throw a guitar at you if you push him into that category. If he doesn't, I would.

Although I can't stand listening to too much "CCM Radio" I do have fun with it. One of the games we play at band practice is "How would this song be played if it were played by musicians who didn't have to fit into the CCM Machine (known in the middle ages as "the Iron Maiden"). Some of the songs do have postential, but they really need a lot of work.

Honestly, I think CCM radio is the happy-bop, disco dance opiate of the church. Get into the rhythm, who cares about the heresy. Dance to the beat long enough and you'll find God, or at least get mind-bashed into a state where you think the gel light in the corner is an angel.

I love cookie cutter CCM. Give me Avalon, FFH, SCC and all those guys! [8D]

amybreit -> RE: Anyone else enjoy "cookie cutter" CCM? (6/30/2008 10:06:26 AM)

Me!!! [sm=wave.gif]Me!!![sm=wave.gif] Me!!![sm=wave.gif] I love what some would call "cookie cutter" CCM! I even listen to *gasp* - family friendly radio! I know to many that makes me someone who has no taste - but frankly I don't care! I like lots of different kinds of music, but apparently the ultimate musical "sin" is to like CCM! There have been times when I've had to just not even look in this folder because I get so tired of hearing how horrible all my favorite artists are!!

Thanks for starting this thread jesusfreak! Unfortunately, it will probably turn into another BASH CCM fest![8D] Why don't we have a CCM folder like SG does? So there is a "safe" place to discuss our favorite artists without being told that they are all talentless hacks & we have no taste because we listen to them!

ta_mosquito -> RE: Anyone else enjoy "cookie cutter" CCM? (6/30/2008 10:34:56 AM)

Amen, Amy! [:D]

Off to pop in a Mark Schultz CD... [8D]

PrincessButtercup -> RE: Anyone else enjoy "cookie cutter" CCM? (6/30/2008 10:56:57 AM)

I like some, but not much of CCM. I still enjoy some Casting Crowns and David Crowder, but for the most part, my cd player is blasting other stuffs.

musicboss11 -> RE: Anyone else enjoy "cookie cutter" CCM? (6/30/2008 6:12:32 PM)

I like everything already mentioned, and more not mentioned. The exception is (sorry Tricia): Avalon [:'(], but it has nothing to do with their music.

gaylel1 -> RE: Anyone else enjoy "cookie cutter" CCM? (7/1/2008 8:42:37 AM)

Yes if the lyrics are bibically based.

BlackCapnHarlock -> RE: Anyone else enjoy "cookie cutter" CCM? (7/1/2008 9:13:38 PM)

I don't enjoy cookie cutter music that much at all. I enjoy some songs from The Newsboys but MXPX and Relient K do it musically for me.

I think Christian music as a whole is suffering from the void left by SIXPENCE NONE THE RICHER. Without Matt Slocum telling it like it is, I feel we are missing that human aspect and mortality which are important in submission to JESUS the CHRIST.

mayfly -> RE: Anyone else enjoy "cookie cutter" CCM? (7/2/2008 2:47:21 AM)

I love the Newsboys but I haven't really been exposed to much of that kind of music... there are no good Christian radio stations where I live.

redeemedsaint -> RE: Anyone else enjoy "cookie cutter" CCM? (7/3/2008 2:52:24 PM)

Not really. It does get tiresome after a while. It seems like there is no originality left.

ta_mosquito -> RE: Anyone else enjoy "cookie cutter" CCM? (7/3/2008 3:02:15 PM)

Here's my question: Why does everything have to be original to be good?

It seems like everything has to be new, cutting-edge, etc. to be considered "good" by people. [8|] I can listen to my Steven Curtis Chapman CD's for hours and not get bored with them, and I wouldn't consider him exceptionally original.

That's one of my pet peeves about music lovers. [:@][8D]

OK, I'll get off people's toes now...

Ouch! My toes... HEY ta_mosquito! Why you gotta go and make a good point like that? Tryin' to make sense and all.

Rufas2000 -> RE: Anyone else enjoy "cookie cutter" CCM? (7/3/2008 9:43:18 PM)

I just have to say this. I can be a music snob. I really do try not to be but when certain artists or bands are mentioned I tend to dismiss them as nothing special. But sometimes in the quest for musical nirvana (not the band [:D] LOL) I forget whats really important. I was reminded of that tonight when I was looking for songs for my Project Playlist . I found "Who Am I" by Casting Crowns. And honestly when I see the name Casting Crowns I think "typical CCM". Not bad just not "special". But when I hear the lyrics "Who am I? That the Lord of all the earth, Would care to know my name, Would care to feel my hurt."* and I realize how insignificant I really am, how much I screw up and that God cares about me anyway and the tears start falling I remember what it is that I love so much about music in the first place. And I'm reminded about what really matters.

* source: any Christian lyrics

BTW: I could have quoted the whole song but I don't want to violate TOS.

Here's my take on this:

I view bands such as Casting Crowns being mainstream but with powerful lyrics. For example, Casting Crowns song "Set Me Free" is one of those songs that I can't listen to without the words hitting home. I definitely think that Christian radio stations, at least the ones in my area, play the same ten songs over and over again. That's what gets on my nerves.

Now I wouldn't even say that it is of that quality. [:'(]

So apparently your answer to the OP is NO.

More or less, wow, I am now guilty of what I promised myself that I would never do: posting something negative about a topic in a thread when the OP meant it to be positive instead. [&:]

Whew, thanks Amy!

cherryfly -> RE: Anyone else enjoy "cookie cutter" CCM? (7/6/2008 1:37:51 PM)

I'm guilty of listening to mostly "cookie cutter" CCM too...especially Rich Mullins, Michael W. Smith, Newsong, Amy Grant etc. etc. etc. Yep, my radio is tuned to "Family Friendly Radio"! Of course, that doesn't mean I don't listen to secular music...I just mostly listen to the CCM.

*blinks, and looks around furtively* Uh oh, did I just label myself as boring and unoriginal???

[:D]LOL
