what are your true thoughts and ideas about country stars recording Gospel songs? Some have entire albums of Gospel, some do a song on occasion on albums, some just write them. Past or present artists. what do you think.
I guess the most famous 2 that did both country and Gospel songs in my opinion are Hank Williams Sr. and Johnny Cash.
I will honestly say I love it because it spreads God's word to others. Is very few American even Death Metal singers who will not list those two as influences. that says they have heard God's words in their life and there is hope for them.
current stars include Billy Ray Cyrus putting out country gospel themed albums, Brad Paisley recording a gospel song each album, Josh Turner's beautiful duet with Ralph Stanley, and Alan Jackson doing the album of hymns. is many more but those are some examples. if far it, please list faves of yours. if not for it, please give some Biblical referneces why shouldn't do it. I am not interested in the well, i don't like it because opinions well, we all have them  .

Back in the day nearly every country star recorded gospel as well as country. Patsy Cline, Porter Waggoner, the Statler Brothers, Merle Haggard, Glen Campbell and many others recorded gospel songs or albums. Porter Wagonner had two albums with the Blackwood brothers. Even Kris Kristofferson wrote and recorded gospel songs. As long as they are sincere about it I don't have a problem with it.
I really like Brad Paisley's version of The Old Rugged Cross!

There have been threads similar to this one before. In general, I think it is fine for a Country singer to do a gospel song. I like it even better when a gospel song makes its way to the top in a Country album, compared to a Country singer doing strictly a gospel album. (ie: Long Black Train, I Believe, Jesus Take the Wheel).

I LOVE IT! A lot of Country and Western singers had their roots in gospel music long before their country career took off. Much like even Elvis Presley did. I am amazed at how many are not living Christian lives today, but still have something in their heart for gospel music. But then again the Bible tells us to "train up a child in the way they should go, and when they are old, they will not depart from it." I think seeing country stars living a non-Christian life, whose roots are in in gospel, are a testiment to that scripture. Although they have chosen a different life, they will never totally get away from their roots.
What I love is the number of Country stars who are now turning Gospel completely. Randy Travis I think has now turned all Gospel. I love to hear him sing "Three Wooden Crosses". I think somewhat God is using Country artists to do the work reaching out to those who were raised in church but grew up and went a different way with their life trying to run from God. Those people typically don't listen to Gospel, but if they listen to Country radio stations or whatever, God is still reaching out to them and speaking to their heart in this way. That is awesome! God knows right where each of us are, and just how to find us, even when we don't want to be found.

I lot of the artist that have been mentioned profess to be Christians. They have always recorded and sang gospel music on stage as well as put out records/cds. Statler Bros. always had a gospel segment on their tv prpgram. They used to always sing Gospel music on the Grand Ole Opry and to this day they even invite Southern Gospel Groups to the Opry to be a part of the program.
I see nothing wrong with them using their God given talents to record gospel music. The music they sing may bring someone closer to God that would not otherwise hear the gospel. Most of them recognize that if it had not been for God giving them the talents to sing they would not be where they are.

If there had been better support of Christian Artists, a lot of today's country artists would still be singing gospel music.

I like the idea. I think there are great singers in all forms of music. It's great to hear them sing gospel music. Especially ones for whom it has a meaning, like Larry Gatlin. He has battled drugs and alcohol over the years, and gives God the glory for his overcoming them.His program on GMC where he and his brothers recorded a new gospel album was terrific.
Don Henley even did a gospel song on his debut solo album back in the early 80's.

As has been stated, country singers adding gospel to their programs used to be the norm. I have no problems with this practice. After all, we obviously listen to some country, or we wouldn't know of this practice. If it's alright for a Christian to listen to it, why wouldn't it be alright for a Christian to sing it? I realize that some country singers may not be "living the life", but that, sadly, is true of some Southern Gospel singers. I listen to very little country anymore, so I don't know how prevalent this situation is.

I have about 5 times the country music as i do gospel music of all genre's put together. especially older country. but to hear Brad Paisley sing a hymn will send chills down your back and give you glory bumps.

I personally think its great. Take for instance the Oak Ridge Boys. Eeach one of the Boys is a Christian. They happened to cross over to country to make a living. Its not that they have gone bad or such. In fact they pay homage to their orginal roots by including some gospel songs in each concert. In fact, the fact that they are Christians causes them to take a stand in what type of country song they will do.
Unfortunately, there is a segment of gospel music who has not forgiven them for crossing over. It didn't bother the Cathedrals as they re-introduced the the ORB to the gospel music field at their farewell concert. The crowd in the Ryman gave them a standing ovation!
I don't have a problem with country singers doing gospel.

This is somewhat related, but the radio station that my parents used to listen to would now be called Classic Country format. Which means they still played the same songs they played 40 years ago.
Anyway, they would play a gospel song each hour. So it has been a long tradition of country artists doing a gospel song.

I agree that Country artists use to do gospel albums. If you're a Christian, then you can sing gospel songs. If you're not, you're in it just to cash in. My opinion. Alan Jackson's Precious Memories was excellent and he is a fine Christian man.

Oh please. Have you met any Southern Gospel singers?? That same verse can apply to many of them as well.
I absolutely love it when country artists record Gospel songs. I think it keeps them true to their roots.

I think it's great. I have alot of Country Gospel Albums. i love Randy Travis. He has always been my favorite. he puts out the best Quality Gospel albums anywhere. I also enjow Josh Turner. I got the chance to see Randy Travis a few years ago at a church in Birmingham. He was incredible. He also shared his testimony. What a night. I think it is awesome for country singers to go back to their roots every once in a while.

Most won't agree with me and that's OK. But My thoughts are equivilent to a SG Group from the late 80's called Cedar Ridge that had a song titled "When Jesus changes your heart He'll change your song."
If your heart is truly given to Jesus there's no reason to switch back and forth between singing for Him and singing songs about beer drankin and Cheatin on your spouse.
It is absolutely not my place to try and judge what is in someone elses heart but I know for myself there is no way I could sing what is played on country music stations with a clear conscience.

I agree heart. whole-heartedly. I am not one to judge and have had one disagree in the dress thread but have to still say. judge not yest ye be judged. or even he who is without sin cast the first stone.
I happen to love country music. take a look at my collection well, took me a while to build.
116 George Jones albums
66 Johnny Cash albums
25 Chris Ledoux albums (((missing 3 and am diligently seeking them out)))
29 Waylon Jennings albums
22 Hank Williams albums (((lotta compilation stuff as he only recorded 6 official)))
26 Willie Nelson albums
41 Loretta Lynn albums
not to get into 42 Coe albums, 27 Paycheck albums, 75 Elvis albums
and a lot of those songs there are Gospel. many are Gospel albums
Jeff, if Brad wanted to sing in my quartet, I would gladly make a spot for him. Josh Turner also
now if you don't agree with country singers doing gospel songs, your opinion is your opinion. but dont think they dont have a walk with the Lord. only them and God know that.

I find it odd that so many people love to listen to country music and love it when a country artist records a gospel album or song. I do the same, but still find it odd.
Now, let's think about what would happen when a southern gospel artist or group records a country song...just once...and it makes it big time on the radio airplay. Do you not think that this could help the southern gospel industry? I think that it could.
Here's an example that I thought of. If you go on Youtube you can find clips of Gold City on stage with the Oak Ridge Boys singing some of the ORB's hit songs. When I first saw this I was thinking that they were doomed once this got out. Then I had to think about the fact that they are on stage at a country concert, not acting all stuffy, not singing what most non-church goers think we all sing...straight out of the hymnal classics. I would almost bet money that some of the people in that concert went home and "Googled" Gold City that had no idea who they were. It planted a seed somewhere along the line and I bet that some of those people have seen them in concert since...in a church, and hopefully got saved because they thought outside the box a little. Again, I thought the worst in the beginning but I think it could be a blessing.
Anyone disagree?

If they could get them on mainstream radio some of the current Southern Gospel songs could be hits in the secular market. Already you sometimes have to listen very carefully to find the message in some of these songs. There's one song on an upcoming project I am producing that I'm still not sure what the message is lol.

You could be right but it could also backfire on the group. I think that most people would look at it the way many did with the Oak Ridge Boys. They would be considered sellouts, someone who had forsaken the message for the money. I'm not saying that is what the Oaks did but many people did see it that way, including some big name artists.

What a gross generalization of country music. There is a lot more to country music than drinkin', cheatin' and losing your spouse, etc.
I personally think of the fact that God's Word won't return void. If the message is getting out there, someone's being affected by it. If God spoke through a donkey, He can surely speak through a country singer.
