If you consider yourself an intellectual, you might want to read C.S. Lewis The Problem of Pain.

It is an excellent book and tenderly explains why a loving God has made a world where so much pain is possible. It is not because God does not love us, but because He loves us so much!

I found that book very insightful and healing.

Deermousie,
I tell you what; I won't call you an idolater if you don't call me a covet-er.
Aside from that all the rest you said is all good.
I'm sure you and I are on the right track but let's not make assumptions, based on a few feelings I shared. God has and is working in my life and looking thru all the lives of the men and women in the Bible no one was perfect and all seemed to have their failings. It is an example to the rest of us that perfection can not be acheived here on earth.

Read it a while back ...like all his books very good, very helpful.
Saw both of the Narnia movies.
I have a pile of half read books every where I look.

Woods,

I am glad you like to read weightier books! I have re-read that book many times.

God's best to you on your journey of healing!

Here's a link to Toxic Parents on Amazon.com. It is not from a Christian perspective, but still contains a lot of helpful tips.

I think I also read Children of the Self-Absorbed at one point, and since it is no longer on my shelf, I must have thought it helpful enough to loan it out too!

I have been an idolater at times, and a coveter at times. God pointed it out to me, and I was shocked. Me? A coveter? An idolator? Sadly, yes. So I confessed it (not always right away, I'm sorry to admit), looked to see how I *should* have been acting, and thanked God for His forgiveness. And I toddle on, holding on to the nail-scarred hand... when I remember. I HATE being a sinner, and I am one.

I apologize for assuming that your problem was coveting - I don't know your heart.

Only God knows my heart, the entire situation, all the facts. That's why my pastor says to leave judgement to God. Not just my pastor, but Apostle Paul wrote that he doesn't even judge himself before
the time of judgement. Apology accepted.
