Wow! So what do you actually pay for? I'd think if you were paying, they should be providing the food themselves! [&:]

It might be for the park permit. We pay about $400 for the permit for our church picnics. We don't charge, but I'm just guessing that might be what's it's to help cover.

I think they are renting the park space, although the park space belongs to a ministry run by the church. So I guess it is a fundraiser, though they haven't said as much. The cost isn't that much...unless you're a big family. [&:]

It's pretty common to charge for a VBS in our city.

Sadey -> RE: Paying for "tickets" to ministry leader events? (7/2/2008 11:13:21 PM)

I've never heard of charging for VBS. Is the charge just for church members or do they charge nonmembers too? We try to reach out into the communities to get as many unchurched children as we can, I think it would be very embarressing to invite someone's children to VBS and then tell them they had to pay to go.

As far as the birthday party goes, did they also make everyone help pay for the present? Just because someone is a Christian, it doesn't automattically mean they have manners or class.

I hate to see churchs charging for a lot of things. You shouldn't have to pay for fellowship.

phosadaud -> RE: Paying for "tickets" to ministry leader events? (7/2/2008 11:18:55 PM)

First, you aren't paying for "fellowship", you are paying to cover the costs of a specific event. You can fellowship for "free" until the cows come home. However, churches spend money - sometimes a lot - for these events and you should never "expect" someone ELSE to pay for you. I mean, you do understand that someone is having to pay for it right?

Sadey -> RE: Paying for "tickets" to ministry leader events? (7/2/2008 11:46:04 PM)

Yes dear I understand, probably a lot more than you think.

Consecrated2God -> RE: Paying for "tickets" to ministry leader events? (7/3/2008 8:30:21 AM)

Our church always covers the costs associated with an event. That's just one of the ways we spend tithes and offerings that come in through the church.

Sadey -> RE: Paying for "tickets" to ministry leader events? (7/3/2008 8:34:53 AM)

Ours too.

I think the fee for VBS is actually a help to visitors/non-members... Large city & suspicious times, and most parents think, "You're putting this Church thing on for free? What do you get out of it? What do you want my kid for?" (Of course we want to evangelize him and turn him into a Bible thumping Jesus lovin' Christian!)

With the fee, it seems more like, "Everybody does day-camps. Church people do Church day-camps. I guess that's a fine option, since it's a cheaper option, it's nearby and his friends are going."

Consecrated2God -> RE: Paying for "tickets" to ministry leader events? (7/3/2008 12:24:04 PM)

Maybe in some cultures that's true, but I don't think around here anyone is suspicious of VBS, or if they were, they wouldn't be less suspicious because the church charged. Most people I've met thinks the church is only after money, and having a fee wouldn't help that image.

I think that's how many here would feel too.

I've never been part of a church that charged for a church event such as VBS or the church picnic. We have put on seminars and charged for workbooks. We also charge for retreats, but usually we find out how many people want to go, and split some of the costs among how many are going. The church as a whole also picks up some of the cost and also helps anyone who wants to go but can't afford it. This help is always discreet.

I have a problem with charging for VBS.
